The identification of the complexities of the sociological dynamics of visitors and visitor use in our national parks has been a challenge to the field of human dimensions for the past thirty years. We continue to gather data through a variety of techniques and attempt to make sense of those complexities to help guide current and future management practices . . .

Using Gis For Selecting Trees For Thinning, I-Kuai Hung, Benjamin C. Mcnally, Kenneth W. Farrish, Brian P. Oswald
Faculty Presentations
Thinning removes trees within a stand to regulate the level of site occupancy and subsequent stand development. Before thinning is applied, foresters determine the amount of residual growing stock, the spatial distribution of the residual trees, and the criteria used to select trees to cut. In this study, a portion of a loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) plantation was surveyed through a complete tree tally with the coordinates of each individual tree recorded. The dataset was then processed in a GIS program composed in Arc Marco Language (AML) applying a moving circular quadrat system superimposed over the study area. In each …

The Financially Optimal Loblolly Pine Planting Density And Management Regime For Nonindustrial Private Forestland In East Texas, Ching Hsun Huang, Gary D. Kronrad
Faculty Publications
Economic analyses were conducted to investigate the effects of initial planting density on the profitability of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) on nonindustrial private forestland (NIPF) in East Texas. Five planting densities of 870, 725, 620, 540, and 484 trees per acre (tpa) representing spacings of 510, 610, 710, 810, and 910 ft, respectively, were investigated. Land expectation values were used to determine the financially optimal thinning and final harvesting schedules (including rotation length and the timing, frequency, and intensity of thinning). Five site indices (50 –90), six real alternative rates of return (ARR) (2.5–15.0%), and three thinning options (0, …

Effects Of Fertilization And Herbicides On Growth Of Young Loblolly Pine And Infestations Of Nantucket Pine Tip Moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), David L. Kulhavy
Faculty Publications
A 2-year-old pine plantation was selected to receive treatments of fertilizers and herbicides to evaluate effects on Nantucket pine tip moth infestations and the tree growthparameters of height, diameter and volume increment. Nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers, and hexazinone and sulfometuron methyl herbicides were used in creating six treatments: (i) control; (ii) phosphorus; (iii) nitrogen and phosphorus; (iv) phosphorus and herbicide; (v) nitrogen, phosphorus and herbicide; and (vi) herbicide. Treatments were applied in 1987 and 1988. In 1987, trees treated with nitrogen, phosphorus and herbicide had significantly greater height, diameter and volume growth than trees not receiving fertilizer treatments, but did …

Characterizing Moisture Regimes For Assessing Fuel Availability In North Carolina Vegetation Communities, Roberta A. Bartlette, James Reardon, Gary M. Curcio
Joint Fire Science Program Research Project Reports
In the southeastern United States prescription burning, fire danger rating and wildfire suppression strategies are constrained by limited knowledge of the influence of moisture content in live vegetation, organic soils, water table and weather. The interactive influence of these factors on fire behavior is not well studied. The 3+ year long study reported here was conducted to gain direct empirical understanding of seasonal fuel and soil moisture dynamics in shrub-dominated pocosin communities, in coastal Virginia and North Carolina, mixed hardwoods communities containing significant laurel and rhododendron understory fuels in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee, and longleaf pine communities in …
Fuel Reduction And Restoration Of Pine/Hardwood Ecosystems Severely Impacted By The Recent Southern Pine Beetle (Dendroctonus Frontalis) Epidemic In The Southern Appalachians, James M. Vose, Katherine J. Elliott
Fuel Reduction And Restoration Of Pine/Hardwood Ecosystems Severely Impacted By The Recent Southern Pine Beetle (Dendroctonus Frontalis) Epidemic In The Southern Appalachians, James M. Vose, Katherine J. Elliott
Joint Fire Science Program Research Project Reports
As a result of this most recent SPB epidemic (1999-2003), thousands of hectares of dead pine trees have created wildfire-hazard conditions in the southern Appalachians. One of the challenges for land managers is how to return fire to these ecosystems after (1) nearly a decade of exclusion, and (2) the more recent SPB mortality enhanced fuel loads. Higher fuel loads have the potential to increase fire intensity and severity. At the extremes, fires of high intensity and severity can have a large effect on ecosystem structure and function. The objectives of our research were: (1) to quantify fuel load reduction …
Manejo De Cipós Na Amazônia, Jeffrey J. Gerwing, Edson Vidal
Manejo De Cipós Na Amazônia, Jeffrey J. Gerwing, Edson Vidal
Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
Effects Of Herbicide Application Of Foliar Morphology And Nutrient Concentrations In Mid-Rotation Pine Plantations, Prabudhda Dahal, Hal O. Liechty
Effects Of Herbicide Application Of Foliar Morphology And Nutrient Concentrations In Mid-Rotation Pine Plantations, Prabudhda Dahal, Hal O. Liechty
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Application of herbicide to reduce competing brush and hardwood species is a common silvicultural activity in young loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) stands. A reduction in competition generally increases the amount of available resources to the loblolly pine crop trees thereby increasing foliage biomass, fascicle dimensions, and foliar nutrient concentrations. To what extent herbicide application and competition control alters these foliar characteristics in mid-rotation stands has rarely been reported. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate whether the application of herbicide alters the morphology, mass, and/or nitrogen concentration of mid-rotation loblolly pine foliage. We aerially applied an imazapyr herbicide to …
Identifying The Factors Distinguishing Timber Sales On Industrial And Non-Industrial Private Forest Lands In Arkansas, Sayeed R. Mehmood, Prabudhda Dahal
Identifying The Factors Distinguishing Timber Sales On Industrial And Non-Industrial Private Forest Lands In Arkansas, Sayeed R. Mehmood, Prabudhda Dahal
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Although forests provide a wide variety of products and services, timber still continues to be the most valued forest product in the marketplace. More than two-third of the nation's forests are under private control, some are owned by industries (about 10%) while a much larger portion (about 59%) is owned by individuals. This study investigates the differences between timber sales offered by industrial and non-industrial ownerships. A test of means revealed that there is a significant difference between per hectare bid for these 2 types of sales. A logistic regression model was then estimated to identify important factors characterizing this …
The Challenge Of Environmental Protection, Jennifer Mattei
The Challenge Of Environmental Protection, Jennifer Mattei

Connecticut is in the midst of a demographic transition to a period of lower population growth. These demographic changes will help check the pressures exerted on the state's natural resources by population growth. Water, air, soil, energy sources, food, fisheries, forests, and biodiversity are common pool resources upon which we depend in ways that transcend political boundaries. Those governing Connecticut should help turn the state into a model of how to manage natural resources by halting forest fragmentation, reducing pollution, and promoting environmental science education.
