In many pockets of the American West, stresses and demands on water resources are overwhelming our capacity to effectively manage change and accommodate the diversity of interests and values associated with our limited water resources.
This event will offer an opportunity for lawyers, policymakers, and water professionals to engage the experts on the challenges and emerging solutions to the most pressing water policy and management issues of the day.

Forest structure and species composition in many western U. S. coniferous forests have been altered through. re exclusion, past and ongoing harvesting practices, and livestock grazing over the 20th century. The effects of these activities have been most pronounced in seasonally dry, low and mid-elevation coniferous forests that once experienced frequent, low to moderate intensity,. re regimes. In this paper, we report the effects of Fire and Fire Surrogate (FFS) forest stand treatments on fuel load profiles, potential fire behavior, and fire severity under three weather scenarios from six western U. S. FFS sites. This replicated, multisite experiment provides a …

Human-caused disruptions to seed-dispersal mutualisms increase the extinction risk for both plant and animal species. Large-seeded plants can be particularly vulnerable due to highly specialized dispersal systems and no compensatory regeneration mechanisms. Whitebark pine ( Pinus albicaulis), a keystone subalpine species, obligately depends upon the Clark's Nutcracker (Nucifraga columbiana) for dispersal of its large, wingless seeds. Clark's Nutcracker, a facultative mutualist with whitebark pine, is sensitive to rates of energy gain, and emigrates from subalpine forests during periods of cone shortages. The invasive fungal pathogen Cronartium ribicola, which causes white pine blister rust, reduces whitebark pine cone production by killing …
Evaluating Hazelnut Cultivars For Yield, Quality And Disease Resistance, Sam Tobin
Evaluating Hazelnut Cultivars For Yield, Quality And Disease Resistance, Sam Tobin
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
ABSTRACT This long term study focuses on testing various hazelnut cultivars for yield, nut quality and disease resistance. There are various cultivars that are being tested for these desired traits but only the Grand Traverse and Skinner will be applicable for the results of this localized study. The desired traits of commercial nut production are best matched by these two cultivars. Results from previous harvests will be used to draw trends to recommend commercially functional cultivars in Eastern Nebraska.

Changes in vegetation and fuels were evaluated from measurements taken before and after fuel reduction treatments (prescribed. re, mechanical treatments, and the combination of the two) at 12 Fire and Fire Surrogate (FFS) sites located in forests with a surface. re regime across the conterminous United States. To test the relative effectiveness of fuel reduction treatments and their effect on ecological parameters we used an information-theoretic approach on a suite of 12 variables representing the overstory (basal area and live tree, sapling, and snag density), the understory (seedling density, shrub cover, and native and alien herbaceous species richness), and the …

Evaluating Forest Volume Estimation At Barksdale Air Force Base Using Lidar And Multispectral Imagery, Richard E. Brooks, Daniel Unger, Hans Michael Williams, I-Kuai Hung
Faculty Presentations
Hardwood and pine stand volume estimates compiled from past field plot samples were compared to Lidar volume estimates through the interpretation of Lidar assessed height, crown width and trees per acre to ascertain if Lidar derived volume estimates can be used in lieu of traditional volume measurements.

Assessing Ecological Functions Of Bottomland Hardwood Wetlands Using Remote Sensing And Geographic Information Systems, Rachel Mcnamee, Hans Michael Williams, Kenneth W. Farrish, I-Kuai Hung, Daniel Unger
Faculty Presentations
Bottomland hardwoods are one of the most rapidly diminishing wetland ecosystems due to agricultural clearing, development, and reservoir construction. As society has become more aware of the functions of wetlands, so has the importance in conservation of these valuable resources. The objective of this study was to compare the accuracy of Remote Sensing and GIS based functional assessment to the field based Hydrogeomorphic (HGM) approach. Remote sensing models were developed using a combination of soil maps, soil information, QuickBird ® multispectral satellite imagery, LiDAR derived Digital Elevation Model (DEM), and LiDAR derived Canopy Height Model. Results, although mixed, indicated that …

Joint Fire Science Program Briefs (2007-2012)
Land managers must make fi re management decisions considering place, history, and species, an undertaking that requires a vast amount of information that tends to be spread through many publications. The Fire Effects Information System ([FEIS] at www.fs.fed.us/database/feis) provides a single source for managers, where knowledge available in the scientifi c literature has been analyzed, discussed, and synthesized into reviews of plant and animal species. As managers formulate plans for prescribed fi res, fuel management, and post-fi re revegetation, they can see at a glance, without having to perform their own literature search, what the results of past research have …
Chipping, Burning, And The Care Of Southeastern Pine Woodlands, Lisa-Natalie Anjozian
Chipping, Burning, And The Care Of Southeastern Pine Woodlands, Lisa-Natalie Anjozian
Joint Fire Science Program Briefs (2007-2012)
Chipping as a land management tool is increasing in popularity to treat lands where burning presents problems, such as areas with ever growing population along the wildland-urban interface. Escaped fi re, and health and nuisance hazards from smoke have caused many managers to avoid burning altogether. The researchers found chipping by itself is likely not an adequate surrogate for fi re, either for restoring ecosystems to desired plant communities, or for limiting fuels, changing fi re behavior, and reducing smoke as a safeguard for future wildfi res. However, chipping in conjunction with fi re demonstrates mostly positive benefi ts for …
Saltcedar: Is Burning An Option?, Jake Delwiche
Saltcedar: Is Burning An Option?, Jake Delwiche
Joint Fire Science Program Briefs (2007-2012)
Saltcedar, an invasive plant genus, is diffi cult to eliminate. A 2001–2002 research project, partially funded by the Joint Fire Science Program, investigated burning as a tool to combat the growth and spread of saltcedar in Western riparian environments. It also evaluated the subsequent survival characteristics of saltcedar after the prescribed burn. The research was performed by a team from Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas. Researchers concluded that fi re behavior in saltcedar-dominated communities is largely dependent on whether the areas have burned in the recent past. Decadent stands of saltcedar carry fi res through the crowns with extreme fl …
