An Investigation Of Fraxinus Americana Branch Sway Using A 3 Dimensional Motion Capture System, Anna T. Campiformio
An Investigation Of Fraxinus Americana Branch Sway Using A 3 Dimensional Motion Capture System, Anna T. Campiformio
Master's Theses
Abstract
Wind is a dominant abiotic factor that a tree experiences throughout its lifetime and can cause severe tree damage, resulting in risk of injury to humans, and economic and ecological losses. It is thought that trees develop structural properties and architectures that help withstand loading conditions by dissipating wind energy through damping mechanisms. The role of branch motion in reducing potential dangerous wind loads has been the focus of relatively few studies. Even fewer studies have examined tree sway response to natural wind loaded conditions. In this investigation, branch frequencies were calculated for three Fraxinus americana using a three-dimensional …
Ecological Importance Of Large-Diameter Trees In A Temperate Mixed-Conifer Forest, James A. Lutz, Andrew J. Larson, Mark E. Swanson, James A. Freund
Ecological Importance Of Large-Diameter Trees In A Temperate Mixed-Conifer Forest, James A. Lutz, Andrew J. Larson, Mark E. Swanson, James A. Freund
Forest Management Faculty Publications
Large-diameter trees dominate the structure, dynamics and function of many temperate and tropical forests. Although both scaling theory and competition theory make predictions about the relative composition and spatial patterns of large diameter trees compared to smaller diameter trees, these predictions are rarely tested. We established a 25.6 ha permanent plot within which we tagged and mapped all trees greater than or equal to 1 cm dbh, all snags greater than or equal to 10 cm dbh, and all shrub patches greater than or equal to 2 m2. We sampled downed woody debris, litter, and duff with line …
Cheating Cheatgrass: New Research To Combat A Wily Invasive Weed, Gail Wells
Cheating Cheatgrass: New Research To Combat A Wily Invasive Weed, Gail Wells
Joint Fire Science Program Digests
Cheatgrass and its cousin, red brome, are exotic annual grasses that have invaded and altered ecosystem dynamics in more than 41 million acres of desert shrublands between the Rockies and the Cascade-Sierra chain. A fungus naturally associated with these Bromus species has been found lethal to the plants’ soil-banked dormant seeds. Supported by the Joint Fire Science Program (JFSP), researchers Susan Meyer, Phil Allen, and Julie Beckstead cultured this fungus, Pyrenophora semeniperda, in the laboratory and developed an experimental field application that, in some trials, killed all the dormant soil-banked Bromus seeds, leaving none to germinate the following year. The …
Sediment Removal From The San Gabriel Mountains, Mary C. Ferguson
Sediment Removal From The San Gabriel Mountains, Mary C. Ferguson
Pitzer Senior Theses
The issue of sediment removal from the San Gabriel Mountains has been a complex issue that has created problems with beach replenishment, habitat destruction and the need to spend millions of dollars at regular intervals to avoid safety hazards. Most recently 11 acres of riparian habitat, including 179 oaks and 70 sycamores, were removed for sediment placement. Other sites including Hahamongna Watershed Park and La Tuna Canyon also face a similar fate. This thesis questions: How did we get to this point of destroying habitat to dump sediment which is viewed as waste product? What are the barriers for creating …
A 1,461-Year Growing Season Precipitation Reconstruction For The Carolina Coastal Plain, Kathryn Perkins Wolff
A 1,461-Year Growing Season Precipitation Reconstruction For The Carolina Coastal Plain, Kathryn Perkins Wolff
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A recollection and dating of ancient cypress trees and subfossil logs was performed at Black River, North Carolina, and the separate Black River, South Carolina. The new updated and expanded chronologies date from AD 365 to 2010 and 549 to 2010, respectively. Baldcypress ring-width chronologies are dominated by high inter-annual to decadal variability and do not tend to capture century scale fluctuations in tree-ring growth that could be associated with centennial scale change in climate. The tree-ring chronologies were standardized with a technique designed to preserve low frequency variance known as regional curve standardization. The two chronologies were averaged into …

Bark Beetles And Fire: Two Forces Of Nature Transforming Western Forests, Gail Wells
Bark Beetles And Fire: Two Forces Of Nature Transforming Western Forests, Gail Wells
Joint Fire Science Program Digests
Bark beetles are chewing a wide swath through forests across North America. Over the past few years, infestations have become epidemic in lodgepole and spruce-fir forests of the Intermountain West. The resulting extensive acreages of dead trees are alarming the public and raising concern about risk of severe fire. Researchers supported by the Joint Fire Science Program (JFSP) are examining the complicated relationship between bark beetles and wildfire, the two most influential natural disturbance agents in these forests. Are the beetles setting the stage for larger, more severe wildfires? And are fires bringing on beetle epidemics? Contrary to popular opinion, …

Northwest Forest Plan The First 15 Years (1994-2008): Watershed Condition Status And Trend, Steven H. Lanigan, Sean N. Gordon, Peter Eldred, Mark Isley, Heidi Anderson
Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations
We used two data sets to evaluate stream and watershed condition for sixth-field watersheds in each aquatic province within the Northwest Forest Plan (NWFP) area: stream data and upslope data. The stream evaluation was based on inchannel data (e.g., substrate, pieces of large wood, water temperature, pool frequency, and macroinvertebrates) we sampled from 2002 to 2009 (193 watersheds) as part of a repeating sample design. We just completed our first round of sampling, so only current condition was calculated for this data set. When condition scores for the inchannel data were grouped into categories, relatively few fell into the low …

Effects Of Treatments Using Mat-28 For Pine Site Preparation, Andrew W. Ezell, Jimmie L. Yeiser, Pat Minogue
Effects Of Treatments Using Mat-28 For Pine Site Preparation, Andrew W. Ezell, Jimmie L. Yeiser, Pat Minogue
Faculty Publications
Site preparation for pine plantation establishment continues to be the principal use of herbicides in the South. Due to the timing of the work and the cost involved, these applications are critical in both biological and economic terms. In an effort to improve performance in both considerations, a study was undertaken to evaluate a number of herbicide compounds in site preparation applications. A total of 12 treatments were applied with three replications on three sites in a randomized complete block design. Applications were completed in mid-July using a total spray volume of 15 gpa. Treatments included MAT-28 applied alone at …

Screening Cut-Stump Control Of Chinese Tallowtree, Sweetgum And Yaupon With Aminocyclopyrachlor, Jimmie L. Yeiser, M. Link, Jason Grogan
Faculty Publications
Aminocyclopyrachlor (MAT28) was investigated for the potential control of unwanted woody rootstocks of Chinese tallowtree (Triadica sebifera), sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua), and yaupon (Ilex vomitoria). A cutstump application of MAT28+Brush and Basal Oil by Helena was tested against standard treatments: (1) MAT28 2.5%, (2) MAT28 5%, (3) MAT28 10%, (4) MAT28 15%, (5) Garlon 4 Ultra 30%, (6) Garlon 4 Ultra+Stalker 20+1%, (7) MAT28+Stalker 10+1% and (8) untreated check. Herbicides were applied on February 4, 2009. Stems were severed with a chainsaw and herbicide applied immediately and sufficiently to thoroughly wet the surface, edges and top 2 inches of the stump. …
