In vitro techniques are being developed for clonal propagation of selected clones of superior aspen and hybrid poplars. We have increased the efficiency of rooting tissue culture-derived aspen and are developing rapid screening systems for the identification and recovery of aspen that are resistant to Hypoxylon canker.

Quaking aspen occurs on more than seven million acres of the interior western United States. It is seral in most sites, usually giving way to more shade-tolerant conifers. Regeneration is almost exclusively by root suckering -- seedlings are a rarity. Discrete clones that occupy several acres are the rule on mountainous western landscapes. Management practices reflect the values of this ecosystem. These values, in decreasing order of importance, are: livestock forage, wildlife habitat, watershed cover, esthetics and recreation, and wood products. Wood products are gaining in importance, thus encouraging more active management of this important type.

The effects of pulp pretreatment. pulp consistency. and quantity of sulfite added on final pulp brightness were studied using the cupric ion catalyzed sodium sulfite-air bleaching system. Aspen kraft pulp that had been partially delignified by chlorination and alkaline extraction was used. Highest brightnesses were attained by pretreating the pulp with cupric ion and by using the highest practical consistency. Brightness increased. but at a decreasing rate, with increases in added sulfite. A search was made for other catalysts. Nickelous ion vas found to be effective. but not quite as good as cupric ion. Numbers of breeding birds were estimated for various sizes and ages of clearcuts, for edge habitat created by the clearcuts, leave strips between clearcuts, and uncut aspen forest (controls). Total numbers of birds were not different among three size classes or five age classes of clearcuts. Total were lower on clearcuts than on edges but not different from controls or leave strips.

Tall shrubs are a dynamic component of upland forests in the Lake States (Balogh 1983, Dunn 1986, Ohmann and Ream 1971). They are an integral part of forest element cycles, competitors with overstory for growth and reproduction, essential to post-harvest site stabilization, and a source of wildlife cover and browse (Comerford and White 1977, Dunn 1986, Robinette 1972, Tappeiner 1971).

Response Of Breeding Birds To Commercial Clearcutting Of Aspen In Southwestern Colorado [Usa], V.E. Scott, G.L. Crouch

Breeding birds on an aspen forest in southwestern Colorado increased in species diversity after 25% of the timber sale area forest was clearcut in patches of 3 to 20 acres. Bird population density on the forest with clearcuts was not significantly different from that on an uncut forest. Of the 20 species evaluated, six were more and one was less abundant than on the uncut forest.
