Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda) Leaf-Level Physiology And The Influence Of Genotype, Drought, And Thinning, Norman Jesse Cone Iv

Master's Theses

The Southeastern U.S. is known as the “Wood Basket” for producing the vast majority of U.S. timber, but projected increases in the frequency of severe drought events could threaten timber plantations. Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) is the principle timber species of the southeast and is distributed across the Atlantic Coastal Plains and west into Texas. Western Gulf states (LA, TX, AR, and OK) lie at the edge of the range for loblolly pine and are particularly vulnerable to any changes in precipitation or temperature. Current research suggests two main methods to increase plantation drought resistance: plant drought resistant seedlings or …

Impact Of Using Different Stocking Rates Of Goats Under Pine Plantation On Plant Species Occurrence And Animal Productivity, Anthony S. Kumi, India Howard, Ronald C. Smith, Nar Gurung, Alphonso Elliott

Professional Agricultural Workers Journal

Abstract

The study assessed the impact of using different stocking rates of goats under pine plantation on plant species occurrence and animal productivity. It was conducted on an 11 year-old loblolly pine plantation site in Epes, Alabama from July to October 2011. Thirty-six Kiko crossbred male goat kids of 4 to 5 months of age were assigned to different stocking rates, namely, low (4 goats/acre), medium (8 goats/acre), and high (12 goats/acre) with three replications each. Forage composition, animal daily gain (ADG) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) were monitored. Bahia grass (Paspalum notatum) was the most dominant grass …

Forestry, Trees, and Timber

Throughout the South the amount of timberland — about 182 million acres — exceeds the amount of cropland and pasture combined. Approximately one-third of all land in the South is covered with pine trees. Loblolly pine is by far the most abundant pine species. Its natural range in cludes the 12 southern states from Texas to Virginia, as well as Maryland and Delaware.

Loblolly pine has spread remarkably in the South east, growing quickly and forming pure stands in aban doned agricultural fields. For this reason, it is also known as “old field pine.”

The early colonists called a moist …

Project Report No. 45, Loblolly Pine Plantations In East Texas Thinned And Unthinned - Total Wood Flow Comparison A Simulation, J. David Lenhart, Curtis Vanderschaaf

Informal Project Reports

In East Texas loblolly pine plantations, is the total wood flow from a thinning and a final harvest greater than total wood flow from just a final harvest? That is, does including one thinning in the rotation have an advantage over no thinning in the production of wood during the rotation?

Effects Of Fall Fertilizer Applications Of Mitotic Index And Bud Dormancy Of Loblolly Pine Seedlings, Hans Michael Williams, David B. South Apr 1992

Effects Of Fall Fertilizer Applications Of Mitotic Index And Bud Dormancy Of Loblolly Pine Seedlings, Hans Michael Williams, David B. South

Faculty Publications

A series of studies examined the effects of fall fertilization with diammoniwn phosphate (DAP) on mitotic index and bud donnancy [as measured by mean days to budbreak (DBB)] of two half-sib seed sources of loblolly pine. The first study tested different rates of DAP (0, 67, and 202 kg Nlha), the second study compared DAP with ammoniwnnitrate, and the third study examined the effect of different application dates (September 28, October 19, and November 9). An increase in mitotic index of unfertilized seedlings was observed during October and was due to developmental activity which follows initial budset. Differences in mitotic …
