Creating effective agroforestry systems with broad public support requires simultaneously addressing landowner and societal goals while paying respect to ecological processes that cross spatial and political boundaries. To meet this challenge, a variety of planning and design tools are needed that are straight-forward and flexible enough to accommodate the range of issues and the many individual decision-making processes involved. In this paper, we offer some principles that should be considered when developing planning and design tools for agroforestry. Soil tensile strength (TS) and aggregate stability (AS) values can be used as indicators of soil structural quality. The objective of this study was to determine the influences of land use types, soil carbon and clay contents on soil structure. Soil samples were collected from 51 different locations from the Kumkale Basin in Çanakkale in April and July 2003. A global positioning system (GPS) was used to determine the coordinates of sampling points. TS, AS, soil organic carbon (SOC), and clay contents were determined. This study was conducted to estimate the effect of salinity on crop yield by employing a geographical information system (GIS) and remote sensing technologies. The saline soils of Arıcan village, located in the southeastern part of Harran Plain, were studied. Surface soil samples representing each soil series in the study area were collected and analyzed to generate an electrical conductivity (EC) map of the study area soils. Quaking aspen is the most widely distributed tree species in North America and an asset to sociological, ecological, and hydrological land values in the western United States. In recognition of these values, land managers seek means to oppose a regional decline of aspen in the Intermountain West—a decline apparently in progress since the close of the Pleistocene and driven by climate change, fire suppression, and increasing ungulate densities. One location of special relevance to this decline is the Utah-Colorado Book Cliffs, a discrete boundary of quaking aspen’s geographic range and a potential biogeographic corridor between the sub-alpine communities of the …

Longleaf Ridge Special Area (LRSA) located in the Angelina National Forest is the westernmost example of a longleaf pine savanna community. Ecologically, the area is one of the most diverse communities in Texas. Due to its size, abundant natural and historical resources, numerous outdoor recreation opportunities exist. In this study, GIS was used to develop a forest recreation concept plan on LRSA. Most of the geospatial data came from public entities. Information for demand analysis on forest recreation was obtained from the 2000 National Survey on Recreation and the Environment database. A Geographic Information System Assessment Method For Fire Management: Identifying Fire Danger Areas, Richard D. Stratton

In partnership with the USDA Forest Service and the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire, and State Lands, a geographic information system (GIS) was used to create a wildland fire assessment methodology. GIS layers (or themes) include topography, infrastructure, vegetation, climate, "sensitive" natural values, and fire history. Two phases of assessment are presented: a preliminary analysis designed for planning use at the landscape level, and a detailed analysis for site-specific use.
Results of the phase 1 assessment are density grids delineating areas of high fire occurrence and suggesting to managers where a phase 2 assessment is needed. By using the environmental, …

Comparison Of Presettlement And Present Vegetation Cover Of Marion County, Illinois Using A Geographic Information System, Daniel Unger

The vegetation types of Marion County, Illinois prior to European settlement, which were derived from soil association surveys, were compared to a satellite map of current vegetation types to quantify their change over time. GIS analysis indicates that 10% of presettlement prairie is currently grassland, 2% of presettlement prairie has been converted to forest, 32% of original prairie has been converted to agriculture and urban use, 17% of presettlement forest remains intact, grassland comprises 18% of presettlement forest while 21% of presettlement forest has been converted to agricultural and urban use.
