Prescribed burning (also referred to as controlled or hazard reduction burning) refers to the use of fire under controlled conditions to achieve a desired end product or goal. However, the nature and magnitude of the changes that result from prescribed burning are still incompletely known, and this is especially true for the forests of the Ozarks of northern Arkansas. Low-density residential development (i.e., exurban development) is often embedded within a matrix of protected areas and natural amenities, raising concern about its ecological consequences. Forest-dependent species are particularly susceptible to human settlement even at low housing densities typical of exurban areas. However, few studies have examined the response of forest birds to this increasingly common form of land conversion. The aim of this study was to assess whether, how, and at what scale forest birds respond to changes in habitat due to exurban growth. The use of remote sensing for environmental policy development is now quite common and well-documented, as images from remote sensing platforms are often used to focus attention on emerging environmental issues and spur debate on potential policy solutions. However, its use in policy implementation and evaluation has not been examined in much detail. Here we examine the use of remote sensing to support the implementation and enforcement of policies regarding the conservation of forests and wetlands in the USA. Topographic Factors Affecting The Tree Species Composition Of Forests In The Upper Piedmont Of Virginia, Rachael C. Brown, Todd S. Fredericksen

There are many factors that influence forest species composition and many are linked to topographical features. This study, conducted on the Ferrum College campus in the Upper Piedmont Physiographic Province of Virginia revealed three major forest types associated with topographic factors using cluster analysis and detrended correspondence analysis . The first type of forest occurred mostly on northeastern slopes on toe slope topographic positions and was mainly composed of tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) and red maple (Acer rubrum). The second type of forest was found on shoulder and side slope positions and was composed mostly of …

The Natural Resources Law Center's 25th Anniversary Conference and Natural Resources Law Teachers 14th Biennial Institute provided an opportunity for some of the best natural resources lawyers to discuss future trends in the field. The conference focused on the larger, cross-cutting issues affecting natural resources policy. Initial discussions concerned the declining role of scientific resource management due to the increased inclusion of economic-cost benefit analysis and public participation in the decision-making process. We argue that two problems weaken the claims of those who link corruption and the exploitation of natural resources. The first is conceptual. Studies that use national level indicators of corruption fail to note that corruption comes in many forms, at multiple levels, and may or may not affect resource use. Without a clear causal model of the mechanism by which corruption affects resources, one should treat with caution any estimated relationship between corruption and the state of natural resources. The second problem is methodological: Simple models linking corruption measures and natural resource use typically do not account for other …

Concern exists over the effects of interacting environmental stresses on the ecological integrity of temperate forests. Coincidence of sensitivity to drought, increasing occurrence of defoliation, and elevated pollutant deposition has produced speculation that northern hardwood forests may be susceptible to the increased climatic stresses projected for the Great Lakes region. The objective of our study was to examine relationships among environmental stress factors, vigor, mortality, and growth in northern hardwood forests located along a pollution-climate gradient in the Great Lakes region. This book describes the various growth patterns of forests from a mechanistic point of view. Its purpose is to help silviculturists, forest managers, and ecologists understand and anticipate how forests grow and respond to intentional manipulations and natural disturbances. Demands on the forest have been increasing for timber production, wildlife habitat, water protection, recreation, and protection from fires, insects, and diseases. This proceedings is the product of an international symposium on the Larix species of North America, Europe, and Asia. Western larch, an important species in the Western United States and Canada, was featured. The symposium included information on ecology, management, silviculture, regeneration processes, growth, wildlife, vegetation succession, silvics, history, genetics, breeding and provenance testing, physiology, fire, insects and disease, and research need. This proceedings illustrates the importance of Larix in the temperate forests of the Northern Hemisphere.

This book addresses the relationships between air pollution in the western United States and trends in the growth and condition of Western coniferous forests. The West is defined in this case as the eleven conterminous states of California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana. Approximately one-third of the West is forested, primarily by coniferous forest types.

Behavioral And Thermoregulatory Responses Of Moose To High Ambient Temperatures And Insect Harassment In Aspen-Dominated Forests, Lyle A. Renecker, Robert J. Hudson

Heart rate and insect annoyance were studied in hand-reared adult moose (Alces alces) cows released into a 65-ha enclosure in April, May, July, and October. Radiant heat load exerted the greatest influence on heart rates of bedded moose in all months. Wind and insects had lesser, but significant effect during April and May, respectively. Respiratory rate was related to ambient temperature showing a dramatic increase about 14℃.

Most forestry schools control forestland. Traditionally, the school forest has served as a laboratory for field instruction and research. This article reports on a 1985-86 survey of the 1 candidate and 46 accredited forestry schools in the United States on the ownership, objectives, and management of school forests.
The survey's purpose was to determine the extent and distribution of forestland ownership by forestry schools. The survey addressed how the forestry schools gained control of the land; the objectives of forest management, and how important the school forest was to the teaching, research, and service functions of the university. Many studies document herbicide performance for Heed and hardwood control in forestry. Few studies, hoHever, attemp t to develop optima l application strategies. Stand-level optindzation is presently limited due to lack of groHth and yield information. Forest-level optimization is possible, however, and has great potential to aid in planning forestry weed control prog rams.

Conifer management in the lake States requires the land manager have a diverse set of tools to accomplish the task of plantation establishment and survival. Methods are almost as variable as the soils of the region, which as remnants of ancient seas, volcanos and more recent glaciers. Terrain, soil profile, drainage, aspect and climate are some of the basic factors contributing to the diversity of sites and management regimes practices in the region. Herbicides are an important part of successful conifer management regimes. Approximately 70M forested acres are treated annually in MN, WI and the Upper Peninsula of MI.
