A Low-Carbon Energy Blueprint for the American West (Martz Summer Conference, June 6-8)

The future of the planet may depend upon our ability to increase energy supplies even as we reduce carbon emissions. This conference will address how a low-carbon energy program might evolve with a particular focus on the American West. It will focus on the future of energy in the West--on a “managed transition” to a different energy mix, on the need to nest this effort in a framework that acknowledges interconnections, and on identifying the most salient opportunities to consider the legal, political, financial, and technical challenges.

Global Economics Of Nutrient Cycling, Bert H. Janssen, Oene Oenema Jan 2008

Global Economics Of Nutrient Cycling, Bert H. Janssen, Oene Oenema

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This paper briefly discusses global human requirements of protein nitrogen (N) from crops and animals, and then estimates the need for fertilizer N as a function of N use efficiency, and the recycling of N from animal manure and sewage wastes. These estimates are based on various assumptions and simple calculations. Results suggest that globally only 1% of N input is retained, 28% is lost to the wider environment, and some 70% is potentially available for recycling via manure and sewage. In addition, large amounts of nutrients recycle via crop residues. In practice, only a fraction of this potential is …

Impact Of New Technology On Timber Harvesting Costs: Evaluation Methods And Literature, F. W. Cubbage, B. J. Stokes, Steven H. Bullard Jan 1988

Impact Of New Technology On Timber Harvesting Costs: Evaluation Methods And Literature, F. W. Cubbage, B. J. Stokes, Steven H. Bullard

Faculty Publications

Timber harvesting and transport are crucial components of the cost of delivered wood to forest products processing facilities. In fact, harvesting and delivering wood often costs more than the entire costs of growing wood until harvest. As such, timber harvesting research and development are important. Additionally, research in this area is worthwhile because efficiency gains, cost improvements, and environmental benefits due to timber harvesting research can be realized in a very short time period, rather than the decades-long wait required for research investments in timber growing.

This paper provides an overview of the means of measuring the impact of new …

Financial Maturity Of Timber And Maximum Net Present Values, Steven H. Bullard Jan 1985

Financial Maturity Of Timber And Maximum Net Present Values, Steven H. Bullard

Faculty Publications

Simple financial maturity guidelines recommend harvesting timber when its rate of value growth becomes less than or equal to the highest rate that can be earned in other investments of equal risk. Several authors have shown that fin ancial maturity guides are consistent with maximizing economic c riteria such as net present va lue , but their results are sometimes accepted by fore sters and land managers without being fully understood. In this article , financial maturity guides are derived in a way that is easily understood, simply by maximizing the present value of all future net income.
