Knowledge Of Forest Ecosystem Among Forest Guards In Southern Nigeria, Norris I. Erhabor

Undertaken study assessed the level of ecological knowledge among forest guards in southern Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was used for study. A structured questionnaire was administered to 60 respondents that are employed by forest guards system. Central question the study attempts to answer is the level of knowledge of the ecosystem among forest guards. Analysis of data revealed that forest guards have inadequate knowledge of ecosystem. Calculated mean score of respondents was 14.25. This mean score is lower than theoretical mean of 16 (80%). Given increased pressure on natural resources to deliver benefits, complex trade-offs and the regulation of behaviours in relation to benefits is of key concern. Behaviours that signify resistance to the rules according to which benefits are allocated prompt us to consider causal links and feedbacks between benefits, perceptions of benefits, meanings attached to the benefits, and the regulatory instruments that mediate the distribution of benefits. An understanding of how meanings influence the perception of benefits exposes the complexity inherent in how people perceive and allocate value to natural resource benefits. Behavioral And Thermoregulatory Responses Of Moose To High Ambient Temperatures And Insect Harassment In Aspen-Dominated Forests, Lyle A. Renecker, Robert J. Hudson

Heart rate and insect annoyance were studied in hand-reared adult moose (Alces alces) cows released into a 65-ha enclosure in April, May, July, and October. Radiant heat load exerted the greatest influence on heart rates of bedded moose in all months. Wind and insects had lesser, but significant effect during April and May, respectively. Respiratory rate was related to ambient temperature showing a dramatic increase about 14℃.
