This study was carried out to determine the different irrigation regime effects on oxygen isotope discrimination of stem water (Os) and its relationship with grain yield (GY), aboveground biomass (BM), and stomatal conductivity (gs) of winter wheat. For this purpose a field experiment was conducted between 2009 and 2011 in a semiarid region of Turkey under rainfed (RF), deficit (DI), moderate (MI), and full irrigation (FI) conditions. The highest GY and BM (4.5 t ha$^{-1}$ and 14.5 t ha$^{-1}$) were measured from the FI treatment. However, the difference between the yield of DI and FI treatments was insignificant. It might …

Cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium L.) seed oil is available for biodiesel production as a wild plant species. In the present study, the cocklebur seeds collected from Muslubelen, Yozgat, Turkey, at 1440 m in 2014 were sown in the Bozok University Agriculture Faculty Topçu Research Area during 2015 and 2016. The maximum crude oil ratio was obtained as 35%. Oleic and linoleic acid contents of cocklebur seed oil were determined as 11.37% and 76.97%, respectively. Impact Of Long-Lasting Insecticide-Incorporated Screens Oncolorado Potato Beetle And Plum Curculio, Ayhan Gökçe, Georgina V. Bingham, Mark E. Whalon

The efficacy and behavior effects of long-lasting insecticide-incorporated screens (LLIS; polyolefin containing deltamethrin) were tested under laboratory conditions against two important pests (Leptinotarsa decemlineata and Conotrachelus nenuphar). Four Vestergaard ZeroFly® LLISs of different specifications were evaluated: trial batches JLCB061009, SPSA 6616, ZeroFly Greenhouse (B), and ZeroFly Greenhouse (G). Two control products were also included: ZeroFly Screen Greenhouse White with no insecticide and a standard commercial fiberglass insect screen. Contact bioassays revealed that all treated LLIS products, except JLCB061009, provided >90% mortality within 24 h of exposure for both susceptible (New Jersey, USA) and resistant (Long Island, NY, USA) L. decemlineata …

Safflower is an important oilseed crop for the dry regions of the world. In the present study, we aimed to find out the seed oil content and composition of the wild relatives of safflower. For this purpose, 71 populations from 5 naturally growing Carthamus species were collected from Turkey: Carthamus dentatus (30 accessions), Carthamus lanatus (30 accessions), Carthamus persicus (2 accessions), Carthamus glaucus (6 accessions), and Carthamus tenuis (3 accessions). In this experiment, 100 ppm gibberellic acid (GA3) was applied to Memecik olive trees in the middle of June in the `on' (bearing) year to research the effects on yield, reducing sugar amount, and endogenous hormones with the purpose of bearing fruit regularly. The yield was 19.33 kg/tree in control plants and 17.33 kg/tree in GA3-treated plants in the `on' year. The yield was 7.17 kg/tree in GA3-treated plants and 4.00 kg/tree in control plants in the 'off' year. While GA3 treatment was not very effective on the decrease of fruit amount in the `on' year, it increased fruit amount …

The effects of various concentrations of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on `Ankara? pears (Pyrus communis L.) were investigated. The pears were harvested at commercial maturity level and 1-MCP (250 and 500 ppb) was applied to the fruit for 24 h at 5 °C. After 1-MCP treatments, the pears were kept at 0 °C temperature with 90%-92% relative humidity (RH) for 8 months. Fruit samples were taken at 2-month intervals from the storage room and various physical and chemical analyses, including soluble solids content, weight loss, flesh firmness, titratable acidity, skin color, respiration rate, ethylene emission, and fruit taste were carried out on …

Traditional forest management relies on a small field sample and interpretation of aerial photography that not only are costly to execute but also yield inaccurate estimates of the entire forest in question. Airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is a remote sensing technology that records point clouds representing the 3D structure of a forest canopy and the terrain underneath. We present a method for segmenting individual trees from the LiDAR point clouds without making prior assumptions about tree crown shapes and sizes. Changes in land use such as mountaintop removal mining with valley fills (MTR/VF) affect chemical, physical, and hydrological properties of headwater streams. Although numerous stream taxa have experienced significant declines from MTR/VF, stream salamanders appear to be particularly sensitive. Yet, the specific mechanism(s) responsible for the population declines has eluded researchers. We sampled salamander assemblages across a continuous specific conductivity (SC) gradient in southeastern Kentucky and estimated occupancy rates and abundance estimates along this gradient. Conventional Appalachian surface-mine reclamation techniques repress natural forest regeneration, and tree plantings are often necessary for reforestation. Reclaimed Appalachian surface mines harbor a suite of mammal herbivores that forage on recently planted seedlings. Anecdotal reports across Appalachia have implicated herbivory in the hindrance and failure of reforestation efforts, yet empirical evaluation of herbivory impacts on planted seedling vitality in this region remains relatively uninitiated. First growing-season survival, height growth, and mammal herbivory damage of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.), shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata Mill.), and white oak (Quercus alba L.) are presented in response to varying intensities …

Land Use Land Cover (LULC) changes can take place at the expense of degrading environmental conditions and undermining ecosystem’s capacity to deliver benefits to people. In the Appalachian region, surface mining for coal is a major driver of LULC change. The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) of 1977 requires mine site reclamation but typical reclamation practices often result in land cover dominated by grass and shrubs. The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) is a promising reclamation strategy but not in widespread use by industry. Recent increases in large fires in the rapidly developing wildland-urban interface (WUI) areas of central Washington, where development intermixes with wildland fuels, contribute to federal firefighting costs exceeding of $1 billion annually. In addition, cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) invasion and anthropogenic-caused warming shorten fire return intervals while lengthening fire seasons. These climatic, ecological, economic, and social factors combine with fuel accumulation resulting from historic fire suppression to threaten lives and property in the WUI. To plan for safe growth in WUI areas, long-term fire histories are needed to expand understanding of past fire regimes in an understudied ecosystem, sagebrush …
