Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The first step towards the biofortification of edible portions of crop species with improved nutritional value is to understand the genetic diversity available to breeders in germplasm collections. A faba bean germplasm (129 landraces and 4 cultivars) from diverse geographic regions of Turkey was assessed for micro- and macroelement contents of seeds. The results showed high diversity in open-pollinated faba bean germplasm for contents of N (27.5-93.3 g kg^{-1}), P (1.24-4.89 g kg^{-1}), K (4.5-19.3 g kg^{-1}), Fe (29.7-96.3 mg kg^{-1}), Mn (15.5-29.2 mg kg^{-1}), Cu (10.3-33.0 mg kg^{-1}), and Zn (10.4-49.3 mg kg^{-1}). Since Superstorm Sandy in October 2012, Kendra McMillin and Gerry Hertel monitored tree fall in the Gordon Natural Area. After Sandy there was a wind event in August, 2013 and then the ice storm in February 2014 which caused further tree fall.

Sorption of the cations NH_4^+, Al^{3+}, Fe^{2+}, Mn^{2+}, and Mg^{2+} in powdered zeolite and its mixture with soil was monitored. More than 90% of the observed cations were fixed in the zeolite in the first few minutes of the laboratory experiment, which is a very fast speed of sorption, and the ammonia cations reacted fastest. Consequently, the dynamics of the nitrate and ammoniac nitrogen in soil after application of zeolite in different amounts was monitored. Questions: How do recent patterns of drought-induced woody plant mortality in Texas semi-arid savanna compare to the extended drought of the 1950s? Does the relative composition of the woody plant community shift ubiquitously across the landscape following woody plant mortality and dieback or are shifts dependent on differences among species, soils, land use and plant demography?

Reliable dimensional data for old-growth pine-dominated forests in the Gulf Coastal Plain of Arkansas are hard to find, but sometimes unfortunate circumstances provide good opportunities to acquire this information. On July 11, 2013, a severe thunderstorm with high winds struck the Levi Wilcoxon Demonstration Forest (LWDF) near Hamburg, Arkansas. This storm uprooted or snapped dozens of large pines and hardwoods and provided an opportunity to more closely inspect these rare specimens. Baptisia arachnifera (Hairy Rattleweed) is an endangered herbaceous legume that only occurs in Wayne and Brantley Counties of Georgia, United States. Many of the remaining populations exist in areas now managed for timber. This study investigated the effects of Imazapyr, an herbicide commonly used in timber management, on health and vitality of B. arachnifera under both field and greenhouse conditions. This study also analyzed leaf and soil samples from six populations of B. arachnifera to determine the nutrient content of the leaves. Habitat disturbances affect wildlife populations through numerous mechanisms, and determining specific components of habitat disturbances affecting those populations is challenging. For example, a single disturbance can both change local habitat conditions and impose limitations on dispersal of animals. Both of these components can negatively affect biological responses, such as body condition, local movement patterns, or survival. Culverts are a habitat disturbance having both of these components. Culverts affect local habitat conditions by increasing sediment levels in downstream reaches, negatively affecting animals downstream of culverts. This research examines patterns of aerial smokejumper usage in the United States. I assess landscape and environmental factors of their deployment using a detailed nine-year record of smokejumper activity in combination with terrain, fuels, and transportation network data. Specifically, the research seeks to identify commonalities in location (proximity), terrain, fuels, fire occurrence, and accessibility of smokejumper actions that inform current usage and identify opportunities for improved utilization. Conspicuous vegetation entities of pedogenic soils rich in cadmium and their diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA)-extractable Cd content (DCd) under the temperate continental and Mediterranean climatic conditions of western Anatolia were determined. Foliage of herbaceous plants and nearby soil samples was collected from 51 zinc mining areas. DCd content was found to reach 11.6%-16.2% of the total Cd content, indicating more extractability than in many other heavy metals. Growth chamber and nursery experiments were conducted with the seeds collected. Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is one of the most destructive pests of several vegetables and fruits worldwide. In spite of various control methods, this pest has still continued to cause significant damage. In this study, the culturable bacterial flora of S. littoralis was determined. New isolates from S. littoralis, as well as 12 different Bacillus isolates belong to 5 species that were previously isolated from different pests, were tested on S. littoralis larvae. Clones of Eucalyptus grandis × nitens and E. grandis × urophylla were subjected to various culture conditions at every culture stage leading to plantlet regeneration directly from axillary buds. The objective was to determine the possibility of using the same protocol for all clones. The present study examined the bending moment capacity and rigidity of T-type out-of-plane furniture joints and investigated the effects of heat treatment, wood species, and joint type factors on these joints. Heat treatment method clearly decreased the modulus of rupture (MOR) and the modulus of elasticity (MOE) of selected wood species. The bending strength of wood samples was reduced after the heat treatment, decreasing with increased loss of mass. For the heat-treated T-type joints, maximum bending strength values were obtained with Iroko (Chlorophora excelsa) for both mortise and tenon (MT) joints and blind MT (BMT) joints. Iron (Fe) deficiency is one of the common problems in strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) growing regions. In vitro screening enables researchers to evaluate genotype performance under several concentrations of Fe in a relatively fast and economical way. The dusky cotton bug, Oxycarenus laetus Kirby (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae), is a serious threat to cotton due to early cultivation of Bt cotton. These studies were carried out under laboratory and field conditions to estimate the feeding damage caused by O. laetus to seed weight, seed germination, and lint quality of cotton cultivar Bt-121 at 6 bug densities (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 adult pairs). Quality Characteristics Of Trabzon Persimmon Dried At Several Temperatures And Pretreated By Different Methods, Si̇bel Bölek, Ersel Obuz

Although Trabzon persimmon (Diospyros kaki L.) is a beneficial fruit for both human health and industrial use, it is generally used seasonally, and inadequate attention has been given to its off-season use. This study was designed to determine the best drying method for optimizing the quality of dried Trabzon persimmon (Diospyros kaki 'Fuyu'). Samples treated with sodium metabisulfite prior to drying and dried at 65 °C had the highest L* value (P < 0.05). Rehydration value and ascorbic acid content of samples dried at 50 °C were the highest. Nevertheless, these samples had lower total phenolic content than samples dried at 65 °C and 90 °C. Samples treated with sodium metabisulfite before drying had the highest appearance score; however, these samples were the least liked and had the lowest flavor score. Control samples were the most popular samples in terms of flavor (P < 0.05). During storage, control group samples had the highest increase in total mesophilic aerobic bacteria, while samples treated with sodium metabisulfite prior to drying had the lowest increase in total mesophilic aerobic bacteria, owing largely to the antimicrobial effect of sodium metabisulfite. Although sodium metabisulfite treatment gave the best physical, chemical, and microbiological results, these dried persimmons were given the lowest sensory scores.

A study was conducted to examine the effects of tenon geometry on the bending moment capacity of simple and haunched mortise and tenon joints under the action of both compressive and tensile loads. The effects of tenon width (25, 37.5, and 50 mm), tenon thickness (7.5, 10, and 15 mm), and tenon length (20, 25, and 30 mm) were examined. All of the joints were constructed of Turkish beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) and were assembled with a 40% solid-content polyvinyl acetate. Irrigation water can be polluted by the tobacco etch virus (TEV), which causes serious economic loss in tobacco. However, it is difficult to monitor the sanitary status of irrigation water because TEV presents at extremely low concentrations. This study designed a procedure for concentrating TEV from a standard water sample using polyethylene glycol and detecting it using SYBR Green-based quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The concentration factors were optimized through orthogonal tests and the highest recovery efficiency of the TEV genome from a standard water sample was 92.05%. Fifty-four progenies of Melia azedarach selected from 11 geographical locations in India were evaluated for different growth parameters at the seed farm at Ladhowal, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, India. Significant differences were observed among and within progenies for all characters at the age of 8 years. Progeny number 1 exhibited superior growth for all traits except clear bole height and number of branches. High narrow-sense heritability (progeny basis, within-progeny basis, and individual plant basis) was higher for mean annual increments for total height and diameter at breast height than other recorded growth parameters. The main objective of this study was to implement a spatial model with a multicriteria assessment approach for rice (Oryza sativa L.) land suitability by using geographic information system (GIS) techniques. The land mapping units resulting from the overlay of the selected theme layers had unique land quality information on which land suitability was based. The photoperiodic sensitivity and storage of Orius majusculus (Reuter) from Antalya was investigated to obtain data for the optimization of its release. In the current study, it was not possible to induce a high (up to 100%) incidence of diapause unless all the nymphal instars and adults were successively exposed (i.e. full exposure) to a short day length (11.5 h) at constant temperatures of 18 and 26 °C, and fluctuating temperatures of 10/26 °C. Xanthium strumarium L. is a major weed affecting flour corn in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan. Studies conducted in 2006 and 2007 evaluated corn yield and yield component responses to competition from X. strumarium over a range of corn populations (5, 7.5, 10, and 12.5 plants m^{-2}) and X. strumarium densities (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 plants m^{-2}).
