This research was carried out in order to determine the effects of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization on yield, some fruit characteristics, hormone concentrations, and alternate bearing in pistachio (Pistacia vera L.) cv. 'Kırmızı' grafted on P. vera over 3 consecutive years. Nitrogen was applied at the rate of 0 (control), 800, 1000, and 1200 g tree^{-1}, and phosphorus was applied at the rate of 0 (control), 200, 400, and 600 g tree^{-1} into the soil. Linear-Like Discrete-Time Fuzzy Control In The Regulation Of Irrigation Canals, Ömer Faruk Durdu

A linear-like discrete-time fuzzy controller was designed to control and stabilize a single-pool irrigation canal. Saint Venant equations for open-channel flow were linearized using the Taylor series and a finite-difference approximation of the original nonlinear partial differential equations. Using the linear optimal control theory, a traditional linear quadratic regulator (LQR) was first developed for an irrigation canal with a single-pool, and the results were observed. Then a linear-like global system representation of a discrete-time fuzzy system was proposed by viewing a discrete-time fuzzy system in a global concept and unifying the individual matrices into synthetic matrices. Studies investigating the allelopathic effect of root, stem, leaf, and fruit water extracts and infested soil of Euphorbia helioscopia L. on the seed germination and seedling growth of wheat, chickpea, and lentil were conducted in a completely randomized design with 4 replications. Water extracts of root, stem, leaf, and fruit were prepared by soaking dried plant parts of E. helioscopia in water (1:20 w/v) for a period of 24 h. Soil compaction caused by heavy wheeling reduces water infiltration, root development, and yield, and increases bulk density and soil strength. The objective of this study was to determine changes in spatial variability patterns of soil penetration resistance before and after using the silage machine in a corn-growing field. Soil penetration resistance was measured in a 100 × 400 m field with 10 m intervals just before and after harvesting. Measurements were taken from the 20 cm top layer on rows and inter-rows throughout each transect. Effects of calcium nitrate (CN) and sodium sulfate (SS) blossom thinning agents applied after self-incompatibility control substance (SICS) treatment on the fruit set rate and quality of apple were investigated for 2 cropping seasons. CN and SS at 0.1% and 0.2% concentrations were applied once (3 or 4 days after SICS treatment) or twice (3 and 5 or 4 and 6 days after SICS treatment). Commercial Japanese flower thinning agent (FTA: Ekoruki) treated and untreated apple trees were used as treated and untreated controls. SICS was sprayed 7 days before full bloom. Homopteran insects contain bacteria in their cells and tissues known as "secondary symbionts," which under special environmental circumstances act against their host insects. In this study, both molecular- and culture-based methods were used to characterize the bacteria associated with the whitefly in Jordan. We isolated, cultured, and identified 11 species of bacteria from nymphs (6 species), adults (8 species), and parasitized pupae (2 species) of the whitefly Bemesia tabaci collected from different vegetable crops planted in different localities in Jordan. In drained Histosols used as pastures or arable fields the muck-forming process transforms organic soil formations into muck. The rush vegetation (Caricetum acutiformis and Glycerietum maximae) covering Histosols in the organic matter accumulation stage is replaced by meadow vegetation (Molinietalia order). During sustained drainage mucks are transformed into muck-like formations that contain less than 12% organic carbon. The aim of this study was to report the changes in organic matter initiated by the muck-forming process. Soil organic matter was fractionated into humic-acid carbon, fulvic-acid carbon, and humins. Portions of the Levi Wilcoxon Demonstration Forest (LWDF), a privately owned parcel of old growth pine and hardwoods in Ashley County, Arkansas, were recently treated to restore conditions similar to some historic accounts of the virgin forest. Following a hardwood-only cut, a post-harvest inventory showed that the number of tree species in the sample area declined from 24 in 2006 (the most recent pre-harvest inventory) to 12 in 2009. Loblolly (Pinus taeda L.) and shortleaf (Pinus echinata Mill.) pine now comprise 59.2% of the remaining live trees, up from 16.2% in 2006. Between 2006 and 2009, basal area dropped from …

After nearly a century of absence, the black bear (Ursus americanus) reappeared in Kentucky during the late 20th century and has since increased in number. Recolonization of bears in the southeastern portion of the state was thought to have been caused by emigration of bears from adjacent states into the Commonwealth, while in the south-central area, bears originated, or natural recolonization may have been supplemented by the translocation of 14 individuals into the Big South Fork National River Recreation Area. The establishment of intensively managed woody energy crops on reclaimed surface mine lands provides an opportunity to diversify domestic biomass sources, while increasing the productivity and economic value of underutilized land. Our objective is to test the effect of fertilization and irrigation on the growth, survival, biomass accumulation, biomass allocation, leaf area, and nutrient dynamics of American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis L.) and black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) planted on a reclaimed surface mine. The phytochemical study on the leaves and bark of Alseodaphne corneri (Lauraceae) involved extraction and separation of alkaloids by using various chromatographic methods. The structural elucidation of all the alkaloids were done using spectroscopic techniques such as 1D-NMR (1H, 13C, DEPT), 2D-NMR (COSY, NOESY, HMQC, HMBC), UV, IR, MS (GCMS, LCMS, HRMS) and comparison with the literature data. Four aporphines isolated from the leaves of Alseodaphne corneri, were isocorydine 44, norisocorydine 45, N-methyl laurotetanine 46 and N-methyl lindcarpine 47. In vitro morphogenesis of Cucumis melo var. flexuosus (L.) Naudin was studied by direct organogenesis. Induction of adventitious buds was obtained from distal and proximal parts of the cotyledon incubated on Murashige and Skoog (1962) medium containing different concentrations of 6-benzyladenine (BA) (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg L^{-1}) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) (0.0, 0.1, and 0.5 mg L^{-1}). The best organogenesis was obtained from the proximal part of the cotyledon on medium containing 0.5 mg L^{-1} BA and 0.5 mg L^{-1} IAA (88%). This concentration was used for histological analysis. Effects Of Climate Change On Water Resources Of The Büyük Menderes River Basin, Western Turkey, Ömer Faruk Durdu

Temperature and rainfall changes are both significant components of climate change. This study characterizes the effects of climate change on water resources in the Büyük Menderes river basin in western Turkey, based on hydrology, temperature, and rainfall data from the past 45 years (1963-2007). When analyzed with the Mann-Whitney test, the temperature and precipitation time series exhibited obvious step changes with a 5% level of significance. Both the parametric t-test and nonparametric Mann-Kendall statistical test results showed an increasing trend of the temperature. Over the past 45 years, the temperature increased just about 1 °C. The goal of this study was to compare the lipid, glycogen, and total sugar levels in completely starved (no water or sugar provided), honey-fed, sucrose-fed, or sugar-starved (only water provided) females of the parasitoid Bracon hebetor (Say) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). We also quantified the lipid, glycogen, and total sugar levels in newly emerged unfed (day 0) female (n = 30) wasps. The mean amounts of reserves obtained from these females were regarded as a standard for the initial amount of reserves. The glycogen level of emerging females was 17.99 ± 2.02 \mug. This study was conducted in order to evaluate the symbiotic effectiveness of Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. ciceri strains isolated from perennial wild chickpeas (Cicer anatolicum) in comparison to standard bacterial culture, N application, and uninoculated control under NaCl salinity stress conditions. For this purpose, 4 strains (DN1, DN7, TN3, and TN4) were obtained from wild chickpeas. The present study aimed to investigate the prey preference of the omnivorous bug Dicyphus tamaninii Wagner (Heteroptera: Miridae) among 5 different prey species, and its interaction with 3 different natural enemies commonly used in greenhouses. Moreover, the survival duration of the predator was studied in response to different nutritional sources. In multi-choice trials all developmental stages of the predator tested, namely N_3, N_5, and adult female, showed a clear preference for Aphis gossypii Glover over other prey species offered. Invasion of exotic species is a significant problem in natural ecosystems, reaching epidemic proportions and resulting in significant economic losses. However, insufficient knowledge of explicit spatial distribution of invasive species hinders our ability to prevent and/or mitigate future invasion. In this study, we demonstrate the use of existing voluntary data to survey invasive plant species in Kentucky. We also reconstructed the historical distribution of 16 exotic invasive plants typical to Kentucky using herbarium records. The resolution of multiple use conflicts through place-based (national forest-specific) legislation has recently received increased interest. Most of these proposals combine wilderness designation, restoration objectives, economic development, funding arrangements, and other provisions, in a conservation package to be considered by Congress. Interest in the place-based legislative approach is precipitated by numerous factors, including perceptions of agency gridlock, problems related to forest planning, unresolved roadless and wilderness issues, and the embrace of collaboration. Though the national forests have a more unified governing framework than other federal land systems, the U.S. Forest Service has implemented place-based legislation in a few cases. This …

Molecular genetics is proving to be especially useful for addressing a wide variety of research and management questions on the white pine blister rust pathosystem. White pine blister rust, caused by Cronartium ribicola, is an ideal model for studying biogeography, genetics, and evolution because: (1) it involves an introduced pathogen; (2) it includes multiple primary and alternate hosts occurring in large, relatively undisturbed ecosystems; (3) some hosts exhibit endemic resistance; and (4) the disease interaction is long enduring. China has 12 taxa of white pines (subgenus Strobus), including species of wide distribution valuable to plantation forestry and species of rare endemics only distantly related to other white pines. The most important forest diseases of these white pines are caused by the blister rust fungi of the genus Cronartium that alternate to telial host species of Ribes and Pedicularis. The most serious infestations have occurred in southwestern China on Pinus armandii and in northeastern China on P. koraiensis. Several integrated pest management programs rely on the use of mating disruption tactics to control insect pests. Some programs specifically target non-native species, such as the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar (L.) (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae).We evaluated SPLAT ® GM, a new sprayable formulation of the gypsy moth sex pheromone disparlure, for its ability to disrupt gypsy moth mating. The study was conducted in 2006, 2007, and 2008 in forested areas in Virginia, USA. Tsuga canadensis (eastern hemlock) is a highly shade-tolerant, late-successional, and long-lived conifer species found throughout eastern North America. It is most often found in pure or nearly pure stands, because highly acidic and nutrient poor forest floor conditions are thought to favor T. canadensis regeneration while simultaneously limiting the establishment of some hardwood species with greater nutrient requirements. Once a common species, T. canadensis is currently experiencing widescale declines across its range.
