Observation Of Liquid Permeability Related To Anatomical Characteristics In Samanea Saman, Sheikh Ali Ahmed, Su Kyoung Chun

This paper examines wood anatomy as it relates to safranine solution penetration in Samanea saman, which belongs to the family Mimosoideae and is native to Bangladesh. The wood of this species was characterized by diffuse-porous vessels with simple perforations, alternate and opposite vestured intervessel pits, gums in heartwood vessels, vascicentric paratracheal axial parenchyma, lozenge-aliform, confluent prismatic crystals in fiber, and chambered axial parenchyma cells. Different anatomical features affect longitudinal and lateral liquid permeability. Herein microstructures that controlled liquid penetration are described and compared. Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) cv. Tetraflorum sown with different inter-row spacings and seeding rates was grown under the agroecological conditions of Western Serbia. Field experiments were carried out between 2002 and 2006, and biometric characteristics-generative tillers, seed yield, and shoot dry mass-were measured during the first production year. Italian ryegrass was grown with 3 row spacings (20, 40, and 60 cm), using 4 seeding rates (5, 10, 15, and 20 kg ha^{-1}). Soil erosion is an important economic and environmental concern throughout the world. In order to assess soil erosion risk and conserve water and soil resources, soil erosion modeling at the watershed scale is urgently needed. This study integrated the Modified Universal Soil Loss Equation (MUSLE) in a Geographic Information System (GIS) framework in the form of a tool called ArcMUSLE, an extension of ArcGIS® software, to assist soil and water conservation agencies in soil erosion risk assessment and prioritization of critical areas for soil erosion control practices. Identification Of Potato Y Potyvirus (Pvy^O) Resistance In Wild And Cultivated Tomatoes, Fevzi̇ye Çelebi̇ Toprak, Emi̇nur Barutçu, Anne Frary, Sami̇ Doğanlar

Potato Y potyvirus (PVY) is an important plant pathogen worldwide that infects and causes yield losses in the family Solanaceae including potato (Solanum tuberosum), pepper (Capsicum spp.), tomato (S. lycopersicum), and tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum). In this study, 20 different tomato accessions representing 6 different species were mechanically inoculated with PVY^O. The plants were scored visually for symptoms and then tested for presence of the virus 2-4 weeks after inoculation by ELISA. The results were variable. Most wild species of tomato sustained PVY^O replication in inoculated leaves. Some of the wild species showed an immune response, while some became systemically infected. …

Influence Of Temperature On Life Table Parameters Of The Predaceous Mite Euseius Finlandicus (Oudemans) (Acari: Phytoseiidae), İsmai̇l Kasap

This study determined the differences in development time, survival, and fecundity of Euseius finlandicus (Oudemans) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) when feeding on Tetranychus urticae (Koch) (Acari: Tetranychidae) together with birch pollen at 16, 20, 25, and 30 ± 1 °C, 65 ± 10% RH, and 16:8 photoperiod under laboratory conditions. Total development times for E. finlandicus were 29.48, 18.15, 7.28, and 5.90 days for females and 28.16, 17.54, 7.03, and 5.81 days for males at 16, 20, 25, and 30 ± 1 °C, respectively. In coarse-textured soils, low water and nutrient holding capacity due to the high number of macropores limits crop growth. Woods Of A Miocene Petrified Forest Near Ankara, Turkey, Ünal Akkemi̇k, Necla Türkoğlu, Imogen Poole, İhsan Çi̇çek, Nesi̇be Köse, Gürcan Gürgen
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The taxonomic composition of a recently discovered silicified fossil forest, preserved by volcanic activity 18.2-16.9 million years ago in Çamlıdere near Ankara (Turkey), is investigated. Many samples collected were divided into 2 groups as CAM1 and CAM2. Thin sections from transversal, radial, and tangential directions were cut to identify the woods. Wood identifications were performed using standard techniques and fossil wood features. The preserved wood indicates that the forest was composed almost exclusively of Taxodium (CAM1) and Sequoia (CAM2). These genera were extinct from Anatolia and Europe during late Miocene.

The objectives of this study were to compare nonparametric stability measures, and to identify promising high-yield and stable bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes in 7 environments during 2003-2005 in the central Black Sea region of Turkey. The bread wheat genotypes (20 advanced lines and 5 cultivars) were grown in a randomized complete block design with 4 replications in 7 different environments. This study aimed to determine the optimum autolysis conditions for the production of yeast extract, which is used to give a meaty flavor to food products and to increase their nutritional value. Autolysis was induced by incubating baker’s yeast cell suspensions at different temperatures (45, 50, 55, and 60 °C) with a reaction time ranging from 8 to 72 h. Two different types of explant (proximal and flamingo-bill) from Emphasis seedlings, a hybrid cultivar of bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria (Molina) Stand.), germinated under dark and light conditions were cultured on 9 regeneration MS media containing various combinations of BA (0, 1.0, and 2.0 mg l^{-1}) and IAA (0, 0.25, and 0.5 mg l^{-1}). Comparison of the explant types showed that the flamingo-bill type explant had better shoot formation than did the proximal explant. The biology of Cales noacki Howard (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), a particular parasitoid of the woolly whitefly, Aleurothrixus floccosus Maskell (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae), was investigated under laboratory conditions, where the effects of different temperatures [18, 22, 26, 30, 34, 18/26, 26/34 °C] and the longevity of adults on different diets [sugar water (10%), water with honey (10%), water, honeydew of A. floccosus, 1^{st} instar larvae of A. floccosus, or no food] were observed. Mate infusions have been recently and frequently used as dietary supplements because of their health effects to prevent atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease and to be antioxidant. The aim of this study was to determine phenolic compounds and antioxidant activities of green mate (GM) and roasted mate (RM) extracts and compare them with green tea (GT). Storage insect pests, microbial deterioration, and mycotoxins are major threats to dried fruit. Methyl bromide (MeBr) was the fumigant used to control pests until it was banned. In this study the proportion of lignin in wood tissue was analysed in 36 Scots pines differing in their form of dead bark. Material for analyses came from pure pine stands aged 89-91 years located in northern Poland. Chemical analyses were performed in the mature wood zone comprising the last 10 diameter increments located at a height of 1.3 m (DBH). Results indicate differences in lignin content and growth rate in pines whose stems were characterized by different forms of dead bark. The egg-larval parasitoid Chelonus oculator Panzer (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a solitary endoparasitoid. The effect of superparasitism on the development of C. oculator was investigated on a host, Cadra cautella Walker (Lepidoptera : Pyralidae) at 25 °C, 60%-70% R.H., and 16:8 h (L:D) photoperiod. The development time of C. oculator from egg to adult was related to parasitism level from 42.5 ± 0.19 days under single parasitism to 48.4 ± 0.57 days under triple parasitism. The emergence rate of the parasitoid decreased as the parasitism level increased. In addition, the dry mass of adult parasitoid was significantly affected by the superparasitism. …

The effects of Pyricularia oryzae, the causal agent of blast disease in rice, on plant growth, grain yield, and grain quality under Mediterranean conditions were studied in 2002 and 2003. Four rice varieties were grown under high and low disease pressure, achieved by early inoculation with the blast fungus and by natural infection, respectively. Results showed that inoculation affected the overall plant growth and yield and resulted in a reduction in plant height, number of productive tillers per plant, grain weight, and grain yield. Wheat yield of 37 wheat varieties along with a susceptible check, Morocco, was studied under yellow rust pressure across 3 locations of North West Frontier Province (NWFP), Pakistan during 2007. Considerable high disease pressure, as revealed by yellow rust severity, was observed at all locations with the maximum (100%) at Cereal Crop Research Institute (CCRI), Nowshera. Disease severity ranged from 0% to 70% for the tested varieties while reached 100% for Morocco with S type of host response. Twenty durum wheat pure lines obtained from landraces collected from southwestern districts of Konya and 5 durum wheat cultivars were evaluated under rain fed conditions in Konya between 2005 and 2008 in a 3 replicates randomized complete block design to estimate genetic variation and heritability for grain yield and 6 quality traits. The overall goal of the study was to improve pure lines from durum wheat landraces for low input agricultural areas of the Central Anatolian region and similar environmental conditions. Commercial timbers from Turkey used in coastal construction and boat building were tested for their resistance to marine wood-boring invertebrates in a marine trial and in a laboratory screening test. The timbers tested were beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky), oak (Quercus petraea (Mattuschka) Liebl.), chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.), and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). The marine trial was conducted over a period of 5 months at Mersin on the southern Mediterranean coast of Turkey.
