Salt Tolerance Of Pepper Cultivars During Germination And Seedling Growth, Ertan Yildirim, İsmai̇l Güvenç
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of salinity on the germination and emergence of pepper cultivars, and to investigate the potential for genetic salt tolerance during germination and seedling growth. Thus, seeds of 11 pepper cultivars were germinated using 0, 85, 170, and 215 mM NaCl solutions for 14 days. Germination percentage decreased with increased NaCl concentration. All cultivars germinated in all salinities, with the exception of Kandil Dolma in 215 mM NaCl. The greatest germination percentage at 215 mM of NaCl was 71% for 11-B-14. The effect of increasing concentrations of zinc (Zn) on NaCl toxicity was studied in pepper (Capsicum annuum L. cv. Kahramanmaras-3) plants grown in a growth chamber under controlled conditions. Plants were grown in severely Zn-deficient soil with increasing Zn (0, 2, and 10 mg Zn kg^{-1} soil) and NaCl (0%, 0.5% and 1.5% NaCl in irrigation water) treatments. After 46 days of growth, the plants were harvested and the shoots were analyzed for dry matter production, concentrations of Zn, sodium (Na), potassium (K), and phosphorous (P), and K/Na ratios. This model study was conducted in Antalya region greenhouses for the determination and registration of agricultural resources as a part of adjustment efforts for the European Union (EU) Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The aim was to create new database systems based on remote sensing (RS) and geographic information systems (GIS), rather than conventional land measurement techniques. For this purpose, glass and plastic greenhouses were determined by visual data analysis of satellite image, and databases were created for each greenhouse by GIS. Many researchers around the world have reported a gradual increase in mean annual temperature. Yet, there are some reports of a reduction in this parameter. In this study, we investigated the long-term trend of mean annual temperature at 34 synoptic stations in Iran (2 stations in cool humid climates, 14 stations in temperate humid climates, 11 stations in steppe climates, and 7 stations in desert climates, based on the Koppen climatic division) with a minimum record of 30 years by Student's t-test. The variable area transect (VAT) is a plotless density estimator that has received little attention in the ecological literature despite having potentially robust estimation properties. VAT allows for density estimations without the lengthy search times associated with other plotless density estimators. In spite of this, little has been written about the effect of varying transect widths on its density estimation properties or on the practical implementation of the VAT in field settings. Resistance Of Forest Community Types To Structural And Compositional Change Following Beech Bark Disease Infestation, Sarah Ann Hoskinson

Pathogens change forest composition and structure by selectively eliminating susceptible individuals and species. Caused by a complex between an exotic scale insect and fungi, beech bark disease has infected mature American beech (Fagus grandifolia) trees through most of the species range. Before succumbing to the disease, infected trees generate root sprouts, transforming beech from a dominant canopy species into an abundant subcanopy species. Root sprouting can create dense beech thickets that interfere with the regeneration of other species. Exclusion of species from the understory has ecological and economic implications. A three-year survey of kudzu foliage, seed, stems, and roots for associated phytophagous insects was conducted to establish basic information about the insect communities that kudzu harbors in China and to assess the abundance, diversity and damage caused by these insects. Diseases of kudzu were also surveyed in southern China. A total of 116 phytophagous insect species in 31 families and 5 orders were collected from kudzu in China, in six feeding guilds: foliage, sap, stem, terminal, seed and root feeders. Based on the practical community applications of woody buffe rs and multifuncti onal areas that grew from the ini tial concepts ofecobelts. we are convinced that this type of initiative is a viable option in establishing a positive interface between different types of human activities. The challenge becomes more real every day, as cities expand and both city-edge subdivisions and acreages create ever more interfaces between people with different and often con!1icting activities and basic values. We argue that two problems weaken the claims of those who link corruption and the exploitation of natural resources. The first is conceptual. Studies that use national level indicators of corruption fail to note that corruption comes in many forms, at multiple levels, and may or may not affect resource use. Without a clear causal model of the mechanism by which corruption affects resources, one should treat with caution any estimated relationship between corruption and the state of natural resources. The second problem is methodological: Simple models linking corruption measures and natural resource use typically do not account for other …
