Mandarin (Citrus reticulate Blanco) and lemon (C.limon L.) are among the most cultivated Citrus species in the world. Among different approaches, gamma radiation is widely used to induce mutations in citrus breeding studies. Gamma radiation causes DNA damage, randomly inducing several mutations in the genome. Molecular techniquesarewidely used to detect such induced mutations and genetic diversity in plants. In this study, simple sequence repeats (SSR), inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) and single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) markers were used to detectthe induced mutations andgenetic diversityin someirradiated mandarin and lemon genotypes in comparison with standard citrus varieties. The irradiated genotypes used in this study …

Quinoa is an important staple food crop for millions of impoverished rural inhabitants of the Andean region. Quinoa is considered a good source of protein, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. This study aimed to investigate the genetic diversity and population structure of world quinoa germplasm originating from 8 countries through the iPBS-retrotransposon marker system. Molecular characterization was performed using the 11 most polymorphic primers. A total of 235 bands were recorded, of which 66.8% were polymorphic. Mean polymorphism information content (PIC) was 0.410. Various diversity indices including mean effective number of alleles (1.269), mean Shannon's information index (0.160) and gene diversity (0.247) …

In this study, the mechanism of the biochemical adaptation of wild soybean to the experimentally modeled effects of cadmium sulfate and copper sulfate in approximately double permissible concentration was investigated. The extracted concentrations of cadmium and copper in the experimental soil were determined by inversion voltammetry - 1.46 and 48.25 mg/kg, respectively. Growing soybeans in soil with the addition of copper and cadmium sulfates led to an increase in the concentration of malonic dialdehyde in soybean seeds relative to control by 62% and 38%, respectively, which confirmed the strengthening of oxidative processes. There was also an increase in the specific …

Biochemical Content In Fruits Of Peach And Nectarine Cultivars, Mustafa Kenan Geçer
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
In Turkey, there is an increasing interest for peach and nectarine fruits due to their sensory properties and nutritional values. The large diffusion of new peach and nectarine cultivars requires the knowledge of all fruit characteristics in connection with the cultivation area to satisfy market demand. This study seeks to determine fruit quality attributes and nutraceutical values of 7 commercially important peach (Glohaven, Dixired, Cresthaven, Redhaven, Merrill Gem Free, June Gold, and Jefferson) and 4 nectarine cultivars (Nectared4, Gransun, Cherokee, and Royal Glo) grown in Malatya region of Turkey. The fruits were evaluated for their phenolic compounds (protocatechuic, rutin, quercetin, …

Mercury (Hg) is one of the most important environmental pollutants that negatively affects plant growth and development. Cysteine (Cys) plays an important role in plant response to various environmental stress factors. In the present study, the alleviation of Hg stress through exogenous Cys treatment to maize seedlings was evaluated. For this purpose, a hydroponic experiment was set up to investigate the effect of HgCI2 (100 μM) and in combination with Cys (200 μM) on plant growth, total chlorophyll content, reactive oxygen species, antioxidant enzyme activities, and mRNA expression levels of some antioxidant genes in maize seedlings. The results showed that …

The main objective of this study was to examine the characteristics and the relationship between walnuts in the Una-Sana Canton based on phenotypic properties. This is the first study of preselection of walnut variability in this area. In this study, we evaluated the phenological and morphological characteristics of 75 selected genotypes during 2014 and 2015. Twenty-four phenotypic traits were monitored throughout 2 years on different sites. The results of the PCA analysis showed a very high heterogeneity of walnut seedlings on the examined sites, from the aspect of observed parameters. A limited number of superior genotypes were found, but individual …

In addition to environmental conditions and cultural practices, plant factors, particularly morphological parts, have a significant effect on the yield and feed value of roughages. However, no studies have been conducted for this purpose on quinoa grown for hay production. Therefore, between 2017 and 2018, a study was planned to determine the effect of different sowing times (mid- March, late March, early April, and mid-April) and plant parts (leaves, stems and panicles) together on the herbage yield and quality characteristics of quinoa. In the experiment established according to a randomized complete blocks design, a significant decrease in plant height, stem …

Plant community responses to environmental changes depend upon management strategies, climate, topography, and time. The objective herein was to determine canopy coverage and botanical changes in Turkish highland rangelands with different topographical characteristics between 1993 and 2013. Trends in the plant composition changed depending on the slope aspect (compass direction) and topography. The contribution of the grasses to the canopy decreased, while that of legumes and the other families increased. The results indicated that rangeland degradation occurred under uncontrolled grazing conditions. Suitable range management changes are recommended for the conservation of natural resources in the highland rangelands of Turkey.

The objective of this study was to compare computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based simulations and visualized seed trajectories in different seed tubes that can provide seed incorporation into the soil with enhanced seed spacing. The other objective was to determine the relation between the seed trajectories and peripheral speed of the vacuum disk. In order to meet the first objective, 2 different seeds (corn and cotton) and artificial spherical material (∅10 mm) were tested under laboratory conditions. The seeds and artificial material were released by free fall into the semitransparent seed tubes (seed tubes A and B) from different release points, …

With an annual global production of approximately 25 million tons, the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L), a member of the genus Phaseolus, is one of the major protein sources used as food for humans. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the genome size of the common bean genetic resource collection (154 common bean accessions) in Turkey by flow cytometry (FCM) and determine whether geographical variables affected the genome size. In addition, the number and distribution of 5S and 45S ribosomal DNA loci were designated by performing a fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis in some of the accessions. …

Physalis peruviana L. fruit (Cape gooseberry, CG) is a rich source of phytonutrients, including vitamins, minerals, polyphenols, polyunsaturated fatty acids (FAs), phytosterols, dietetic fibers, and others. The popularity and production areas of CG have been expanding worldwide, thus producing fruit with origin-substantiated differences in their nutrient composition. This study was based on the comparative assessment of 2 genotypes of CG produced in Bulgaria (CG-P and CG-F), through analysis of the lipid fraction of different fruit elements (seeds, peels), and further examination of the extracted seedcakes. The CG seeds reasonably yielded more oil (17.0%-22.2%) than the isolated peels (2.8%-2.9%). The main FAs …
