Quaking aspen in the most widely distributed tree species in North America (66, 78);2/ it has a transcontinental range which covers more than 110 degrees of longitude and 40 degrees of latitude. Other common names include quaking asp, aspen, golden aspen, mountain aspen, trembling aspen, Vancouver aspen, poplar, trembling poplar, and popple (44). The terms "quaking" and "trembling" come from the fact that the leaves tremble in the slightest breeze because the leaf petiole is flattened at right angles to the leaf blade. The term "golden" refers to the brilliant gold and yellow of the foliage in the autumn.

Long range forecasts of the use of wood, independently prepared by the Forestry and Forest Products Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome and the Standard Research Institute in California, concluded that in the foreseeable future there will be only a slight increase in the consumption of lumber but a rapidly increasing use of products made from wood fiber such as paper and paperboard.

Ecological Aspects Of Air Pollution From An Iron Sintering Plant At Wawa, Ontario, A.G. Gordon, E. Gorham

At Wawa, in northern Ontario, vegetation has been damaged severely by sulphur dioxide pollution from an iron-sintering plant. Damage is mainly restricted to a narrow strip northeast from the sinter plant, since southwest winds are strongly predominant. It is traceable from the air for at least 20 mile in this direction and is estimated as severe within 11 miles and very severe within 5 miles. Within about 10 miles NE, from the sinter plant ground flora variety declines markedly, from about 20-40 species per 40 square meter quadrat beyond this distance to 0-1 species within 2 miles of the pollution …

Direct current electrical resistance and radio frequency power absorption indexes were obtained at a temperature of 80°F, and at moisture content values from about 6 percent to bear the fiber saturation point for seven native American species: jack pine (Pinus banksiana), black spruce (Picea mariana), paper birch (Betula papyrifera), black ash (Fraxinus nigra), eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis), bigtooth aspen (Populus grandidentata), and red pine (Pinus resinosa).

The mixedwood types of the Boreal Forest in Ontario occupy sites that have a high potential for the production of spruce and fir. These types are commonly made up of various mixtures of trembling aspen, white birch, black spruce, white spruce, and balsam fir2. In the unmanaged forest, this mixture of species usually results from fire, and the coniferous component is largely spruce. In the managed forest, fir rather than spruce is likely to be the main coniferous species in the next crop where measures are not employed to alter this trend in succession. This is a matter …

The results of a survey taken in northern Minnesota indicate that the occurrence of Hypoxylon canker on aspen has little or no correlation with the sex of the tree. This survey was made during the flowering seasons of 1957 and 1958.
