Effects Of Feeding And Mating On Pheromone Release In The Southern Pine Beetle, Jack E. Coster, J.P. Vite`

Response of field populations of Delldroetoll1lS frontalis Zimmermann to their aggregating pheromone was correlated with pheromone content of dissectted hindgut tissues of adult beetles a determined by the gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) technique. Adult beetles in various stages of feeding activity and reproductive states were used for this purpose. Two major components of the aggregating pheromones, frontalin and trans-verbenol, were found in the largest quantities in emergent unfed females. After 48 hours of feeding, frontal in content of the hindguts was 29% and trans-verbeno content was only 5% of that of emergent females. Continuous bioassays of females feeding in host material …

The Effect Of Pulp Mill Effluents On The Carbon Dioxide Evolution Of Three East Texas Soils, John C. Morris

Two pulp mill effluents, NaOH extraction water from the pulp bleaching process and water from the chlorination step of the pulp bleaching process, were applied to jars containing three East Texas soils. Carbon dioxide evolution was then measured with an infrared gas analyzer to determine the effect of the effluents on the respiration of soil microorganisms. The relationship between effluent treatments was not statistically significant, though detrimental effects were observed in the heavier soil. Irrigation of clays and clay loams with the effluent is not recommended. Irrigation of sandy soils should be possible if there is no danger of sub-surface …

Greenhouse studies showed that loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) seedling survival under severe drought and height growth under favorable and unfavorable moisture conditions were related to moisture retention values of eight East Texas soil types. Soil moisture retention constants nearer to field capacity tensions may give better indications of survival and development in droughty areas than moisture constants nearer to wilting point tensions. Likewise, water consumption (evapotranspiration) during favorable moisture conditions and during moisture stress was related to soil moisture retention characteristics.
