This issue of SEEDS focuses on ways in which women have been involved in a government forest conservation and restoration program in Nepal. As is common with many large-scale projects with a general impact, women were not a direct focus of the project's original design. As activities got underway, however, both the Nepali staff and their expatriate colleagues quickly realized that the direct involvement of women was crucial to the success of the project's participatory strategy. Over the initial five years, 1980 to 1985, a number of approaches to addressing women's needs and generating their active participation were tried. The …

The lumber and plywood industries in the Pacific Northwest were particularly affected by the 1979-1982 construction recession. A subsequent recovery in output has occurred, but employment levels have remained relatively depressed. The potential for a planned reduction in the amount of timber sold from the national forests in the region also exists, giving rise to some uncertainty about the future prospects for these industries. This paper identifies the major structural factors affecting the performance of lumber and plywood producers in the region. The Effects Of Recreation Specialization And Motivations On The Environmental Setting Preferences Of Backcountry Hikers, Randy J. Virden

This study explored how recreation specialization and different types of motivations were related to environmental settings preferred by backcountry hikers. A questionnaire was developed that measured the level of hiking specialization, desired psychological outcomes, and preferred environmental setting attributes. Questionnaires were mailed to 619 backcountry hikers from three Intermountain West hiking areas; a response rate of 68 percent was attained.

Results of the study revealed significant associations between the level of hiking specialization and the psychological states desired by backcountry hikers. On 17 May 1955, dedication ceremonies for the Arcata Community Forest were held by the Arcata Redwood Circle of the Redwood Region Conservation Council, which sent out 2,500 invitations to the event. The first municipally owned forest in the State of California, Arcata's 6OO-acre Forest was to be "managed for the benefit of all the citizens of the city, with attention to watershed, recreation, timber management and other values (Humboldt Times, 15 May 1955).

In his recent Annual Review of Psychology article, Snowdon (1983) discussed the synthesis of ethology and comparative psychology. A similar synthesis of behavioral ecology and animal learning is beginning to take place. This article reviews developments in the behavioral ecology and ethology of foraging behavior relevant to psychological research on animal learning. The psychological literature shows that animals possess a wide range of learning abilities, including “simple” classical and operant conditioning; they acquire spatial, nonspatial, and temporal discriminations; they exhibit various forms of rule learning (e.g. matching-to-sample and learning set), and may even in certain senses learn language. The development of optimization theory has made important contributions to the study of animal behavior. But the optimization approach needs to be integrated with other methods of ethology and psychology. For example, the ability to learn is an important component of efficient foraging behavior in many species, and the psychology of animal learning could contribute substantially to testing and extending the predictions of optimal foraging theory.

An ecological approach based on food distribution suggests that hummingbirds should more easily learn to visit a flower in a new location than to learn to return to a flower in a position just visited, for a food reward. Experimental results support this hypothesis as well as the general view that differences in learning within and among species represent adaptations.

Direct Impact Of Forest Harvesting In Northeastern Minnesota, Philip L. Friest

Direct impact of harvesting operations is examined as one segment in a survey of interrelationships between elements of the primary forest products industry in northeastern Minnesota, an area known popularly as the Arrowhead Region. This study follows classifications used in collection of data for 1977 from seven Minnesota counties. Information is based largely on responses from companies involved. An Input-Output model was employed in the study for assessing expenditures by loggers for wage payments, purchase of timber stumpage, vehicles and equipment operation, financial services, and employee benefits (FICA, etc.).
