Measurement Of Throughfall At Two Levels In A Young Aspen Stand, J.R. Clements

The purpose of this report is to compare measurements of the quantity of throughfall at two different heights above ground level in a seven-year-old sucker stand of largetooth aspen (Populus grandidentata Michx.) This comparison defines the influence rain splash from the forest floor has on the quantity of throughfall catch of trough rain gauges placed on the forest floor.

This paper presents mathematical equations describing the relationships between the amount of net rain per storm under each crown canopy and the amount of gross rain per storm in a multi-storied forest community. The relationships were curvilinear and accounted for gradual filling of the storage capacity of the vegetation. The rate of increase of net rainfall was successively less for each crown canopy in turn starting with the uppermost canopy in the forest. A number of chemicals of diverse characteristics have arbitrarily been classed together on the basis of their use and given the descriptive name "pesticides. " An unfortunate aura of mystery has developed about these chemicals. However, there is nothing unique or mysterious about the chemicals we refer to as "pesticides." Like other chemicals, they have properties which can be accurately measured; they obey all the laws of physics, chemistry, and biology.

It is common knowledge to many who have attempted to control bagworms Thyridopteryx sp., that early instars are fairly easy to control, while later larval stages are less susceptible to insecticides. Studies of other insects (Bennett and Thomas 1963, Munson and Gottlieb 1953, Munson et al. 1954, Reier et al. 1953) have shown that as the lipid content increases, the susceptibility to insecticides (especially chlorinated hydrocarbons) decreases. To determine whether the lipid content of the bagworm larva increased with age a series of lipid extractions was conducted.

Approximately 90,000 small stock ponds are scattered throughout South Dakota. The majority of these ponds are less than 10 acres in size, and depend entirely on surface runoff for their water supply. Although their primary purpose is to provide drinking water for livestock, many species of waterfowl and shorebirds use the pond areas for resting and feeding during spring and fall migrations, and for nesting habitat throughout the summer.

Neither the amount of use nor the potential for use by birds on stock ponds in South Dakota is known. Preliminary data presented here are results of waterfowl observations on 13 …

The Department of Forestry has been carrying on silvicultural research in the white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) and trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) cover types in the Mixedwood Forest Section of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba for about 40 years. This report deals with the effectiveness of cacodylic acid (dimethylarsenic acid) as a silvicide for undesirable trees. Cacodylic acid has been used successfully as an herbicide for the destruction of grasses and weeds. Experimental work with this material was begun during the 1963 field season, and continued during 1964, to permit complete evaluation of the results. It appears that cacodylic acid has considerable potential as a silvicide.

Armillaria root rot is a fungal disease capable of causing serious damage to both young and established orchards.

Although outbreaks are usually localised, eradication of the fungus and replacement of affected trees can involve the grower in considerable expense. For new plantings, thorough clearing of the land is recommended for preventing losses from this disease.

This species, a shrub between six and 15 feet in height, is the largest-flowered of all the species of Eucalyptus.

The name is intended to indicate this fact, but unfortunately the Greek work makros means "long" and actually the fruit "karpos" is remarkably short in comparison to its diameter, being in fact the broadest fruit within the genus.

THIS species was originally named by W. V. Fitzgerald from specimens which he obtained from near Pingelly in November, 1903.

The name accedens is from the Latin accedo—to approach or come near—and is here used in reference to the supposed close approach of the tree to the common wandoo (Eucalyptus redunca var. elata).

While the genus Pinus has been the subject of extensive mycorrhizal studies there are only a few scattered references to western yellow pine, P. ponderosa, and no detailed descriptive literature on the mycorrhizae of this species. P. ponderosa is indigenous to Nebraska and the one species most extensively grown in local nurseries for windbreaks and farm plantings. Similarly, there is little information on mycorrhizae in the Great Plains between the forested regions of the Mississippi River states and the Rocky Mountains.
