Metric equations are presented to predict the volume of wood and/or biomass contained in individual loblolly (Pinus taeda, L.) and slash (Pinus elliottii, Englem.) pine trees growing in unmanaged pine plantations in east Texas. Taper equations are also presented for both species that describe tree form in metric units.

A fifteen-year stumpage price update and analysis for pine and hardwood in East Texas are reported. Thepricesofsawtimberandpulpwoodare presented for both pine and hardwood plantations by using 1988 to 2003 stumpage prices from the Texas Forest Service and Louisiana Department of Agriculture. Timber prices increased steadily from 1988 to the late 1990's, peaked, then declined into 2003 for both Louisiana and Texas. Louisiana prices, though, have remained higher than those for Texas.

The feasibility of alley cropping as a means of afforestation was studied across seven different study sites in western Tennessee and northern Mississippi. Seeds were collected from 11 oak (Quercus spp) species and black walnut (Jug/ans nigra L.) trees in the region and grown under nursery protocols that are designed to produce seedlings of optimal size in one year. Seedlings were lifted by genetic family after one year and initial seedling measurements were recorded. Four bottomland studies and three upland studies were then sorted into an incomplete block design with multiple species and families within each block. …

The amount of forestland in east Texas has been estimated at 11.8 million acres, with approximately 2.5 million acres classified as pine plantations. The majority ofthese plantations are owned by forest industry (71 percent), while non-industrial private forest landowners represent the next largest shareholder (23 percent). Pine plantations are typically managed to produce timber, so information is needed to make informed management decisions. Growth is one piece of information that managers often rely upon in their decision-making process.

Fusiform rust ( Cronartium quercuum [Berk.] Miyabe ex Shirai f. sp. fusiforme) infection rates in East Texas increased to nearly 50 percent in slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm.) and about 15 percent in loblolly pine ( Pinus taeda L.) plantations during the 18-year period from 1969 to 1987. New data from the East Texas Pine Plantation Research Project showed that fusiform rust infection rates in slash pine stabilized around 20 - 30 percent after 1987, then decreased to about 15 percent by 2002. For loblolly pine, the rates stabilized around 10 percent after 1987, then decreased to around 5 percent …

This is the first case study in a series of studies that relate specifically to the development and application of lean manufacturing techniques of furniture and wood component supplying industries. Case study one is an example of how a subassembly process in an upholstered furniture facility was re-configured from a traditional flow line to a “Double-D” manufacturing cell. This case study is #2 in a series of studies that relate specifically to the development and application of lean manufacturing techniques for the furniture and wood component supplying industries. Case study #2 is an example of how productivity can be increased in a furniture manufacturing organization by using a new lean production design termed Parallel Pull Flow (PPF). This case study provides information about lean manufacturing and how a lean manufacturing system can be implemented, followed by a detailed case study of a furniture manufacturing company’s adoption of a new final assembly PPF lean production system.

Managers responsible for maintaining the diversity and productivity of Southern Appalachian forests are increasingly turning to prescribed fire as an important management tool in oak dominated forests. The decision to use fire with increasing frequency and spatial extent is based, in part, on an emerging sense of the prehistoric significance of fire in this landscape and its potential to control the proliferation of fire-sensitive competitors in contemporary forests.
