THIS mallee is unmistakable by reason of its peculiar habit and thick roughbarked stem and branches, both of which have longitudinally-fissured persistent bark right up to the distinctly reddish branchlets.

The leaves are broad and thick, a bright shining green in colour, with the mid-ribs usually a purplish-red. The heads of flowers are on thick red round-in-section foot-stalks which hang almost vertically, and the reddish bud-cap conceals the ultimately free, bright yellow filaments.

The widely-spreading thick branches, and in general the rough stout appearance of the shrub inspired the name "grossa" from the Latin grossus meaning thick.

THIS species is a mallee with an average stature of 5-15 feet, with several erect twiggy branches, the bark smooth except at the very base where unshed patches of a dark greyish-brown adhere to the stems, otherwise it sheds in small plates, leaving a smooth grey-brown bark.

THIS mallee, formerly thought to be restricted to the Comet Vale district, must be very rare in that locality, since it is seldom found growing there, but on the other hand it has an extensive range, being found as far west as Perenjori. Kalannie and Kulja, thence eastwards to Comet Vale, and southward to Mount Holland which lies south of Southern Cross.

THIS tree is one of the common trees of Kimberley, inhabiting the sandy soils of the sandstone ranges, but is found less frequently on the sandy flat country.

It is most common in northern Kimberley extending as far south as the King Leopold Range, and is less frequently encountered on the plains of the Ord and Fitzroy Rivers.

The Bark Beetles, Fuels, and Fire Bibliography

Woodpeckers have been recognized for many years as a major factor in the natural reduction of Engelmann spruce beetle populations. A means of assessing their value has been developed. Five classifications of woodpecker feeding based on woodpecker work on 225 trees were studies. An analysis of populations measurements showed a correlation between beetle survival and the woodpecker classification and the intensity of infestation in each tree. A heavy woodpecker classification resulted n very little survival at all intensities of infestation. Survival increased both with an increase in intensity of infestation and a lower woodpecker classification. The average reduction in populations …

A new disease of red pine has recently been found in southern Connecticut, Rhode Island, eastern Massachusetts, western and central New York, northern New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, central Ohio, and southern Michigan. It is of serious consequence only on plantation-grown red pine, but it also occurs occasionally on eastern white pine. On the former host it is characterized by axially elongated, annual main-stem cankers which are always centered at the nodes. In reporting the damage to trees scorched lightly at the base by fire the average fire warden and even the technically trained forester is given to stating that little harm has been done providing the tree crowns remain green. Such a statement is far from being correct, failing as it does to take into account the aftermath of insect and fungus damage which invariably follows even the lightest of surface fires. In the case reported herein, over 50 per cent of the fire-scorched hardwoods showed signs of the presence of ambrosia-beetles, whose work, even if the trees continue to live, …
