Doug Graham received a M.A. in Geography in December of 1986. This paper is a summary of his thesis entitled "The Samuel Dam: Land Use, Soil Erosion, and Sedimentation in Amazonia." Graham conducted field research in Brazil during the Summer of 1985, with funding from the Tinker Foundation and the Amazon Research and Training Program. His immediate plans are to continue his training in Geography at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Three hypotheses concerning the movement and retention of anions in forest soils were tested in a series of laboratory and field studies on two Tennessee Ultisols with mixed deciduous forest cover and two Washington Inceptisols, one with deciduous (red alder Alnus rubra Bong.) and one with coniferous [Douglas-fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco] forest cover. The first hypothesis, that sulfate and phosphate retention was related to adsorption to free Fe and Al oxides, which were in turn related to soil parent material and degree of weathering, was not supported by results of laboratory and field studies. Dobbs Park is a 105-acre tract, located at the east edge of Terre Haute, Indiana. Community types range from grass-forb to a 14-acre mature deciduous forest. The tract was divided into 36 units from which 14 community types were developed. The large number of community types appears to be a product of discontinued tillage or grazing within various sections of the tract at different times. The mature forest is largely upland depressional, much of which is subject to periodic pending. Dominants among the 34 tree species present are elms (Ulmus americana, rubra and thomasii) and ashes (Fraxinus americana and pennsylvanica) …

This project was designed to determine the effects of nitrogen fertilization on the quality and quantity of streamflow eminating from an eastern hardwood forest watershed. A 40.67 ha watershed, located in mountainous eastern Kentucky, was aerially fertilized in late April 1975. The forest stand was principally oak, hickory, and yellow poplar, 50 - 55 years of age and in a relatively undisturbed condition. A helicopter applied anunonium nitrate at a rate of 504 kg/ha. Because a large part of applied nitrogen fertilizer ends up in the highly mobile nitrate nitrogen.form, this is the principal ion monitored in this study. No …

This paper presents a study of the correlation between soil colloidal content and soil productiveness and hence a measure of the value of colloidal content in determining site quality. The character of this investigation also permitted incidental observation and comment on the relative value of organic matter, soil acidity, and soil type and class as similar measures. By determining the moisture content of carefully selected soil samples taken at various depths down to three feet, the moisture content of soils in the forest and in the open have been compared. The soils investigated were similar in their mechanical properties. Part I is an investigation of the effect of forest cover on the amount of water in the soil over the growing season and its availability. Part II is an investigation of the effect of root competition on the available water supply of forest soils.
