The fruit of woody plants is important as food for wildlife (Martin et al. 1951, Lay 1965). The relation of fruit production to southern forest stand conditions has been explored in only a few studies. Fruit production is greater in forest clearings than in closed forest stands (Lay 1966, Elalls and Alcaniz 1968). In Georgia slash pine (Pinus elliottii) plantations, fruit yields of shrubs are greatest in 4-yeas-old stands, and soil disturbance in site preparation greatly reduces fruit yields (Johnson and Landers 1978). Vegetation Responses To Prescribed Burning In A Mixed-Conifer Woodland, Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, California, Bradford D. Martin

This study reports the results of light intensity prescribed burning on the vegetation of 3 jeffrey pine-black oak woodland sites in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, California. The 1.2 ha, 85 ha, and 6 ha burn plots were measured for tree and shrub density and basal area 6 months, 1% years, and 2 years following burning for the 3 sites respectively. Each burn site measured was compared against equivalent unburned control plots to help assess the effects of the burning. Density of saplings, seedlings, and herbaceous vegetation was also determined for the woodland understories. Dominance and relative dominance of herbaceous ground …

The petrified fossil forests in the Specimen Creek area of Gallatin Petrified Forest contain spectacular petrified tree stumps, trunks and logs in horizontal and vertical positions. These fossils forests are embedded in early middle Eocene volcaniclastic rocks and piled in sequential layers.
One hundred and nineteen fossil wood samples were collected from three selected layers [unit 1, unit 5 and unit 9, (DeBord 1977)] of the sequentially entombed Fossil Forests in the above area, and identified as follows: 3 families, 9 genera, in Gymnosperms; 13 families, 15 genera in Angiosperms.

A study was conducted to contribute to the taxonomy of the nonfruiting myxobacteria and to determine the effects of fire on the occurrence and characteristics of nonfruiting myxobacteria isolated from pine forest soil Three years after a prescribed burn, the population of nonfruiting myxobacteria was decreased in the burn site. The organisms isolated were distinct from any of the known species of nonfruiting myxobacteria, and apparently are new species.

This study investigated the role of the volatile oils of Douglas-fir seeds in olfactory seed detection by deer mice. The removal of these volatile oils from the seed reduces the ability of the deer mice to detect the seeds.
A method is outlined for the removal of the volatile oils from the seeds as well as a method to purify the oils for possible identification and quantification of individual components.

The southern oak woodland of southern California was analysed relative to the local distribution of the trees, density per acre, relative density, relative dominance, percentage of trees growing in close association to boulders, percentage of trees forked below breast height, frequencies of tree diameter and percentage of cover. These characteristics, with the exception of cover, were derived from measurements made using the wandering quarter method. Cover was computed from measurements made on aerial photographs.
A test for homogeneity applied to the distance measurements divided the woodland into two groups relative to local distribution. Both woodlands are non-random with one (dense …

Pinus edulis, Engelman commonly known as the two-leaved "Nut Pine", belongs to the genus Pinus of the tribe Abietineae which in turn is a member of the Pinnaceae family of the order Coniferales. The Coniferales constitute three-fourths of the present gymnosperms which comprise forty genera and approximately 350 species. The dominant conifers are the twenty-nine genera and approximately 245 species included
in the family Pinnaceae. In this family are found four tribes, Taxodineae, Cupressineae, Araucarineae, and Abietineae. This latter form includes nine genera and about 129 species.. The genera are Cedrus, found …

A series of intensive investigations of the ecological features of the tension zone between prairie and woodland in the Mississippi valley was begun by Weaver and Thiel in 1915. These studies were continued for two seasons in Minnesota and were also extended to the prairies of eastern Nebraska in 1916. These investigations represent the first attempt to attack the prairie-forest problem on a comprehensive scale by means of the quantitative methods of modern ecology.
