Visible Near-Infrared Hyperspectral Imaging For The Identification And Discrimination Of Brown Blotch Disease On Mushroom (Agaricus Bisporus) Caps, Edurne Gaston, Jesus Maria Frias, Patrick J. Cullen, Colm O’Donnell, Aoife Gowen

Articles

Brown blotch, caused by pathogenic Pseudomonas tolaasii (P. tolaasii), is the most problematic bacterial disease in Agaricus bisporus mushrooms. Although it does not cause any health problems, it reduces the consumer appeal of mushrooms in the market place, generating important economical losses worldwide. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a non-destructive technique that combines imaging and spectroscopy to obtain information from a sample. The objective of this study was to investigate the use of HSI for brown blotch identification and discrimination from mechanical damage on mushrooms. Hyperspectral images of mushrooms subjected to i) no treatment, ii) mechanical damage or iii) …

Food Science Faculty Articles and Research

Outbreaks of salmonellosis have been associated with eating raw domestic tomatoes. In this study, we examined the efficiency of combined irradiation and a 1% calcium chloride dip to reduce the population of Salmonella enterica strains on diced tomatoes. Tomatoes were contaminated with nalidixic acid-resistant strains of S. Hartford, S. Montevideo, or a mixture of 5 strains (S. Hartford, S. Montevideo, S. Poona, S. Michigan, S. Gaminara). We irradiated tomatoes at various doses up to 0.9 kGy from an electron beam source to conduct a D-value study (decimal reduction time required to eliminate 90% of the organism). Surviving Salmonella populations were …

Incorporating Glass Transition Concepts To Explain Rice Milling-Quality Reductions During The Drying Process, Derek A. Schluterman, Terry J. Siebenmorgen Jan 2005

Incorporating Glass Transition Concepts To Explain Rice Milling-Quality Reductions During The Drying Process, Derek A. Schluterman, Terry J. Siebenmorgen

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Previous research has indicated that while drying rough rice using air temperatures above the glass transition temperature (Tg), head rice yield (HRY) reductions are incurred if a state transition occurs when severe intra-kernel moisture content (MC) gradients are present. State transitions can occur by extended drying using high-temperature air or by cooling kernels below Tg before sufficient tempering has occurred. The objectives of this experiment were to determine the maximum MC removal per initial drying pass and the associated tempering durations required to prevent HRY reduction. Two long-grain cultivars, ‘Francis’ and ‘Wells’, at two harvest moisture contents (HMC) were used. …

Vietnam’S Rice Economy: Developments And Prospects, Kenneth B. Young, Eric J. Wailes, Gail L. Cramer, Nguyen Tri Khiem Apr 2002

Vietnam’S Rice Economy: Developments And Prospects, Kenneth B. Young, Eric J. Wailes, Gail L. Cramer, Nguyen Tri Khiem

AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins

Vietnam shifted rapidly from being a net rice importer prior to 1987 to become the second largest world rice exporter by 1995. Net rice exports have leveled off at about 3.8 million metric tons from 1997 to 1999. The world rice price has dropped dramatically in 2000 to barely cover the rice production cost in Vietnam, and net rice exports are expected to fall to 3.4 million mt because of the poor import demand in 2000. This report reviews the policy adjustments that led to the rapid growth in rice production and evaluates the prospects for Vietnam to continue as …

Correlating Fissure Occurrence To Rice Quality For Various Drying And Tempering Treatments, Monica J. Jimenez, Terry J. Siebenmorgen, A. G. Cnossen Jan 2001

Correlating Fissure Occurrence To Rice Quality For Various Drying And Tempering Treatments, Monica J. Jimenez, Terry J. Siebenmorgen, A. G. Cnossen

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

When a rice kernel fissures, it can break in subsequent food processing operations and lose its commercial value. Head rice yield (HRY) is a measure of the percent of kernels that remain whole (at least three-fourths of original length) after rice has been milled. Our experiment was designed to test the effect of a rapid state transition during drying and tempering processes using cultivars Bengal and Cypress. ‘Bengal’ is a medium-size kernel and ‘Cypress’ is a long-size, thinner grained cultivar. Immediately after drying, the rice samples were separated into four sub-samples and tempered for 0, 80, 160, or 240 minutes …

An Economic Assessment Of The Myanmar Rice Sector: Current Developments And Prospects, Kenneth B. Young, Gail L. Cramer, Eric J. Wailes

AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins

In this study, the Myanmar rice economy is described in the context of the current political situation and state of national economic development. The forces that are changing rice production and exports are identified; however, the rate of development involves a complex integration of government intervention and politics, as well as availability of resources. Probable scenarios for rice production and export are projected based on recent growth trends and expected infrastructure development. The Arkansas Global Rice Model is used to integrate the Myanmar rice sector with the global rice market in developing projections.

Wheat Payments And Protein Content, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Jan 1987

Wheat Payments And Protein Content, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

In recent years there has been increasing support from within the Australian wheat industry for the principal of wheat growers recieving payment for their grain according to market value.

Individual loads are now tested for quality characteristics such as hectolitre weight, unmillable material and moisture content.

At present, technology is not sufficiently advanced to enable rapid and accurate analysis of individual loads for all important quality factors.

A more practical system of quality assessment would be one based on allowances for various basic measures (such as hectolitre weight, unmillable material and moisture content), variety (to allow for genetic differences in …

Ua37/13 Plants Used By The Prehistoric Indians Of Kentucky, Chuck Crume Nov 1985

Ua37/13 Plants Used By The Prehistoric Indians Of Kentucky, Chuck Crume

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

No one knows exactly when the Indians first entered the area we now call Kentucky, but there is an approximation. Archeologists have found evidence of Clovis camps and living sites in the state (9,000 to 12,000 B.P.), This would have been during the Paleo Stage, toward the end of the last ice age. The climate of the area would have been much cooler then. The selection of plants and animals would also have been different than those found in modern times.

Paleo Indians used plants for food, utility and medical uses. It seems that plant use during this period is …

Planning Home Vegetable Supplies, James P. Fallon Jan 1971

Planning Home Vegetable Supplies, James P. Fallon

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

PLANNING is important to obtain the best value from growing vegetables at home and many types can be satisfactorily stored for later use to provide a welcome change of diet when they are not generally available.

Whatever is home grown can be picked absolutely fresh and at the best stage for eating, but there is no advantage in growing too much or in growing lines which are plentiful and cheap on the market when yours are ready to pick.
