Manuka Honey Modulates Oxidative Stress In Neuro2-A Cells Through Mitochondrial Regulation, Rachel Abramovici Jan 2026

Manuka Honey Modulates Oxidative Stress In Neuro2-A Cells Through Mitochondrial Regulation, Rachel Abramovici

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Manuka honey is known for its vital usage in wound healing, being an agonist towards fighting infections, and is an acting antioxidant [32]. Its main constituents are flavonoids and phenolic compounds, with methyl syringate (MSYR) being a major active ingredient. The specific compounds responsible for these antioxidant effects, particularly in the CNS, remain unclear. It is hypothesized that pre-treatment of mouse neuroblastoma cells with MSYR followed by hydrogen peroxide exposure will activate the AMPK/SIRT1/PGC-1a pathway, due to MSYR’s phenolic structure, and thus reduce oxidative stress and improve mitochondrial biogenesis. Hydrogen peroxide is a standard reactive oxygen species (ROS) treatment to …

Effects And Mechanisms Of Phytosterol-Oil Bodies Emulsion On Lipid Metabolism Of Caenorhabditis Elegans, Jie Sun, Mengyuan Yuan, Yifei Liu, Fuyao Zhang, Zhuofan Yang, Guoyou Yin Nov 2025

Effects And Mechanisms Of Phytosterol-Oil Bodies Emulsion On Lipid Metabolism Of Caenorhabditis Elegans, Jie Sun, Mengyuan Yuan, Yifei Liu, Fuyao Zhang, Zhuofan Yang, Guoyou Yin

Journal of Food Science and Biotechnology

[Objective ] This study aims to explore the lipid-lowering effects of the phytosterol-oil bodies emulsion (POE ).[Method ] Caenorhabditis elegans was taken as a model to evaluate the effects of POE on lipid metabolism, physiological indexes, and expression of genes associated with oxidative stress and fat metabolism.[Result ] Compared with the control group, different mass concentrations of POE reduced the mass fraction of fat (P<0.01) and the relative content of triglycerides (P<0.05),without toxicity to the growth and development of C.elegans (P<0.01).At the same time,it significantly reduced the level of reactive oxygen species and increased the levels of antioxidant enzymes. In addition,POE affected the expression levels of genes related to fat metabolism.qPCR results showed that POE up-regulated the mRNA level of sbp-1,while down-regulating the mRNA levels of fat-2,nhr-80,and fat-5 (P<0.05).[Conclusion ] POE may improve lipid metabolism by slowing fat deposition, regulating the fat peroxidation pathway, and alleviating oxidative stress in C.elegans.

Mechanisms Of Antioxidant Activity Of Lactic Acid Bacteria And Its Application In Oxidative Stress-Related Diseases, Yixiao Shao, Chuang Huang, Chenjian Liu, Xiaoran Li Jul 2025

Mechanisms Of Antioxidant Activity Of Lactic Acid Bacteria And Its Application In Oxidative Stress-Related Diseases, Yixiao Shao, Chuang Huang, Chenjian Liu, Xiaoran Li

Journal of Food Science and Biotechnology

The antioxidant properties of lactic acid bacteria are related to various probiotic activities, which can prevent and alleviate a variety of chronic diseases caused by oxidation in the host. The antioxidant mechanisms of lactic acid bacteria, including the action mechanisms of antioxidant enzymes and non-enzymatic antioxidants and regulation of host signaling pathways, were expounded.Furthermore, the application status of antioxidant properties of lactic acid bacteria in diseases of the nervous system, digestive system, and skin system were summarized. The aim is to explore how to enhance the antioxidant activity of lactic acid bacteria in oxidative stress-related diseases and give new insights into the development of related treatment strategies.

In Vitro Antioxidant And Anti-Inflammatory Activities Of Tea Flower Extract And Its Inhibitory Effect On Cell Aging, Shishuai Yu, Yining Hao, Bo Peng, Youyun Liu, Liping Qu Jul 2025

In Vitro Antioxidant And Anti-Inflammatory Activities Of Tea Flower Extract And Its Inhibitory Effect On Cell Aging, Shishuai Yu, Yining Hao, Bo Peng, Youyun Liu, Liping Qu

Journal of Food Science and Biotechnology

[Objective ] This study aims to investigate the in vitro antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of Yunnan tea flower extract (TFE ) and its Inhibitory effect on cell aging.[Method ] The main active components in TFE were determined by ultraviolet (UV)-visible spectrophotometry and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC ).The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of TFE were determined by the free radical scavenging assay and UV-induced photoaging model of human keratinocytes (HaCaT ),respectively. After the aging model of fibroblasts was established, the aging level of cells was assessed by the β-galactosidase (β-gal) staining assay, and the expression of matrix metalloproteinase- 1 (MMP- 1),matrix metalloproteinase- 3 …

Effects Of Starter Cultures On The Metabolite Profile, Antioxidant Activities, And Anti-Aging Properties Of Tapuy Lees, Edward Kevin B. Bragais, Paul Mark B. Medina Jan 2025

Effects Of Starter Cultures On The Metabolite Profile, Antioxidant Activities, And Anti-Aging Properties Of Tapuy Lees, Edward Kevin B. Bragais, Paul Mark B. Medina

Biology Faculty Publications

The Philippine rice wine (tapuy) and tapuy lees making process utilizes bubod, the traditional starter culture. The bubod contains variable number and species of microorganisms and influences the physical and chemical properties of tapuy and tapuy lees, resulting in inconsistent quality products. Hence, improvement and standardization of local starter culture are significant. Here, we examined the effects of well-defined starter cultures (Rhizopus oryzae (RO), Mucor indicus (MI), and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC)) and bubod on the metabolite profile, antioxidant, and anti-aging activities of tapuy lees. Our results showed the presence of polyphenols (102.36 ± 2.84 to 173.92 …

The Role Of Antioxidant Rich Berries In The Prevention Of Postmenopausal Bone Loss, Lydia Karimi Kaume Aug 2012

The Role Of Antioxidant Rich Berries In The Prevention Of Postmenopausal Bone Loss, Lydia Karimi Kaume

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Postmenopausal osteoporosis is the most prevalent form of osteoporosis and results in fragility fractures. Smoking is one of the major risk factors for osteoporosis and is known to aggravate bone loss in postmenopausal women due to increased oxidative stress and inflammation. Diet-based interventions using berries have shown bone protective affects in animal studies partially due to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of their phenolic compounds. The goal of this research was to determine the effects of antioxidant-rich fruits in the prevention of postmenopausal bone loss. Our first study examined the dose dependent effects of blackberries in preventing bone loss in an …
