Comparative Analysis Of Aflatoxin Content In Bitter Almond Fruits (Prunus Dulcis Var. Achchiq) Growing In Various Geographical Region Uzbekistan By High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, Abdukhalil Tojikulov, Khabibjon Kushiyev, Tulkin Djuraev, Hasan Bekpulatov

CHEMISTRY AND CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

The aim of the study was to optimize the process of extraction of aflatoxins secreted by fungi of the genus Aspergillus from almonds, as well as to analyze the content of aflatoxins using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). An HPLC LC 2030 C3D Plus (Shimadzu) column Shim-pack GIST-HP C18 150x4.6 mm 3 µm (Shimadzu) was used at a ratio of H2O/H3C-CN = 40/60 as an eluent at a thermostat temperature of 40 degrees Celsius. Based on the analysis on a fluorescent detector RF-20A with an excitation wavelength of 365-450 nm and a flow rate of 0.5 …

Agar is a hydrocolloid found in red seaweeds, which has been of industrial interest over the last century due to its multiple applications in the food, cosmetic, and medical fields. This polysaccharide, extracted by boiling for several hours, is released from the cell wall of red seaweeds. However, the environmental impact coming from the long processing time and the energy required to reach the targeted processing temperature needs to be reduced. In this study, a response surface methodology was employed to optimize both conventional extraction and ultrasound-assisted extractions. Two different models were successfully obtained (R2 = 0.8773 and R …

Characterization And Analysis Of Curcumin Extracted From Turmeric Using Mass Spectrometry And Uv-Vis Spectroscopy, Cecilia Russo, Anna Fedor Jan 2020

Characterization And Analysis Of Curcumin Extracted From Turmeric Using Mass Spectrometry And Uv-Vis Spectroscopy, Cecilia Russo, Anna Fedor

Student Research Poster Presentations 2020

Turmeric is a spice most commonly found in Indian cuisine that is known for its medicinal properties. The most active compound that can be found in turmeric is curcumin. Curcumin is a polyphenol that is best known for its antioxidant and anticancer properties. Curcumin is mostly insoluble in water so the extraction of curcumin from turmeric was achieved by using ethanol or dichloromethane/hexane as the solvent. Since turmeric is not soluble in these solvents, a small amount of turmeric was soaked in larger amount of ethanol or dichloromethane/hexane to allow the curcumin to be dissolved out. The resulting solution can …

Encapsulation Of Astaxanthin-Enriched Camelina Seed Oil Obtained By Ethanol-Modified Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Extraction, Liyang Xie Apr 2019

Encapsulation Of Astaxanthin-Enriched Camelina Seed Oil Obtained By Ethanol-Modified Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Extraction, Liyang Xie

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Astaxanthin is a high-value carotenoid widely used in the food, feed, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical industries. Natural sources of astaxanthin are preferable to synthetic sources. However, current sources of natural astaxanthin are limited and fall short of global demand. In addition, effective extraction and stabilization strategies are needed before the utilization of natural astaxanthin in food applications. This work investigated 1) the feasibility of ethanol-modified supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) extraction of astaxanthin from engineered camelina seed, a potential source of natural astaxanthin, and 2) the potential of an emulsion-based system to protect astaxanthin after extraction. The physical properties of the emulsion …

Increasing Cis-Lycopene Content Of The Oleoresin From Tomato Processing Byproducts Using Supercritical Carbon Dioxide And Assessment Of Its Bioaccessibility, Lisbeth Vallecilla Yepez Dec 2017

Increasing Cis-Lycopene Content Of The Oleoresin From Tomato Processing Byproducts Using Supercritical Carbon Dioxide And Assessment Of Its Bioaccessibility, Lisbeth Vallecilla Yepez

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In recent years, health- and wellness-promoting foods have been one of the major focus of consumers; therefore, the food industry is increasing its efforts in developing these food products. Tomatoes, tomato-food products and their byproducts have gained special attention in virtue of the carotenoids-rich source that they represent, especially lycopene (~90%). The role of lycopene in human diet has been highlighted as a result of its direct relationship with the decrease of chronic diseases. Nevertheless, lycopene is water-insoluble making its extraction simple with organic-toxic solvents; in addition, lycopene degrades easily with light, time, and storage. Lycopene exist in nature mostly …

High Intensity Ultrasound Assisted Extraction Of Oak Compounds For Accelerated Aging Of Wines And Whiskies, Lindsay Elizabeth Rogerson May 2016

High Intensity Ultrasound Assisted Extraction Of Oak Compounds For Accelerated Aging Of Wines And Whiskies, Lindsay Elizabeth Rogerson

Masters Theses

Aging of wines and whiskies in oak barrels is a timely and expensive process which could be reduced by acceleration. The purpose of this study is to identify if the use of high intensity ultrasound (HIUS) assisted extraction as an alternative, accelerated aging method could be utilized in the production of an oak extract to be used in wine and whiskies. HIUS will also be compared to reflux and room-temperature control extraction treatments as other accelerated aging methods. Secondary objectives of this study were to compare the heat treatment of charred and toasted staves donated by an anonymous donor, their …

Extraction And Purification Of Gamma-Tocotrienol From Rice Bran Oil Deodorizer Distillate, Mary Kordsmeier May 2013

Extraction And Purification Of Gamma-Tocotrienol From Rice Bran Oil Deodorizer Distillate, Mary Kordsmeier

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The tocols (alpha-, beta-, gamma- and delta- tocopherols (T); alpha-, beta-, gamma- and delta-tocotrienols (T3)) make up the vitamin E family of antioxidants. Tocols have many health benefits. Gamma-T3 has been shown to protect against harmful radiation effects in mice. During rice bran oil refining up to 90% of tocols in rice bran are lost to the deodorizer distillate. The objective of this study was to optimize parameters for analyzing and isolating tocols from rice bran oil deodorizer distillate (RBODD). NP-HPLC analysis of tocol standards was optimized by testing ten mobile phases. Tocol extraction was optimized by testing three concentration …
