The frequent outbreaks of food-borne illness necessitate development of intervention strategies, including the use of natural antimicrobials. Listeria monocytogenes is one of the most important bacterial pathogens that recently has caused a significant number of outbreaks. With the aim of finding potent natural agents that can minimize pathogen contamination concerns, this study evaluated the inhibitory activities against L. monocytogenes of grape seed extract (GSE), malic acid (M), nisin (N), and combinations thereof incorporated into soy-protein edible films. Soy-protein films with/without addition of antimicrobial agents (GSE: 1%, Nisin: 10,000 IU/g, Malic acid: 1%, and their combinations) were prepared and evaluated for …

Recently there has been much discussion about the People’s Republic of China’s (PR) investment in and commitment to agricultural biotechnology (agri-biotech). Rapid economic expansion, population growth and technological development are changing the PRC; accompanying these changes is increased demand for high-quality food and fibre. Agri-biotech is optimistically viewed as an important way to meet these demands. Whereas Chinese technological capacity in agri-biotech has advanced significantly over the past decade, it may be unable to meet these challenges. Even when this capacity is combined with good intentions, enlightened policy and large capital outlays, accelerated development of agri-biotech may nevertheless be precluded. …

Power, Privilege, And Special Interests: Rent Seeking And Subsidies In Agriculture, Matt Bogard

This presentation covers what Public Choice economists refer to as ‘rent seeking,’ generally seeking favor or special privilege from government through subsidies or regulatory advantages. Particularly, the biotech industry is the area of focus for this presentation. Problems with rent seeking in the biotech industry involve less innovation and industry consolidation. Policies related to biotech regulation, school lunch programs, the Clean Air Act, and ethanol subsidies are discussed. A game theoretic approach is used and it is concluded that issues related to rent seeking and special interests are not adequately addressed by recent campaign finance reform efforts. The objective of this research was to evaluate a potential time-saving method for surface lipid content (SLC) measurement of milled rice by utilizing new extraction technology. The SLC is often used as the basis for quantifying the degree to which bran has been removed from kernels during the rice milling process; this quality factor is often referred to as degree of milling (DOM). The SLCs of two long-grain cultivars of rice, ‘Cypress’ and ‘Cocodrie’, were determined using an accelerated solvent extraction system (ASE) and compared to the conventional, manual system (Soxtec extraction system) that is typically used for SLC measurement. …

Physicochemical Properties And Leaching Behavior Of Eight U.S. Long-Grain Rice Cultivars As Related To Rice Texture, Devon Cameron, Ya-Jane Wang

There are many long-grain rice cultivars produced commercially in the U.S.; however, little work has been done on correlating the structure and physicochemical properties of starch with their texture. The physicochemical properties, leaching behavior, and texture attributes of eight long-grain rice cultivars were studied. Differences were observed in the approximate composition of kernels, including crude protein (6.6-9.3%), crude lipid (0.18-0.51%), and apparent amylose content (25.5-30.9%). These cultivars also differed slightly in thermal properties, such as onset temperature (73.7° to 77.4°C) and peak temperature (78.8° to 81.9°C). BACKGROUND. Singapore Chinese have experienced a rapid transition toward a pattern of disease in which lifestyle-related, chronic, degenerative diseases are major public health concerns. The rates of colorectal carcinoma have increased 2-fold over the last 3 decades. It has long been known that dietary factors play a role in the risk of this disease, although studies in Asian populations, with their unique dietary intake, have been few.METHODS. In order for agricultural biotechnology (agri-biotech) to play a larger role in the development of sustainable agricultural systems, intellectual property (IP) rights management must be addressed. These issues are not limited to developing countries. With increased globalization, the management of agri-biotech IP rights affects both developing and industrialized countries. In industrialized countries, for example, IP rights risk management entails protection of inventions via strong patent portfolios. For developing countries, IP rights risk management includes the acquisition of rights requisite for the use of inventions essential to the basic welfare of the population. In Bolivia we have three very valuable Andean grains: amaranth (Amaranthus caudatus), quinoa (Chenopodium quinua), and canihua (Chenopodium pallidicaule), which combined with cereals and legumes can become a complete and balanced food in order to combat the malnutrition that is so widespread in our region. In this study, various nutritional mixes were formulated, based on amaranth and other Andean crops, and the three best were chosen according to nutrition, palatability, and cost. They were: Andean Baby Food, Mixicereal, and Amaranth Cookie, which have an amino acid complement between 79% and 100% and give satisfactory amounts of protein, energy, and minerals …

The paper examines the extent of involvement of women in food crop production, processing and marketing in a typical African locality. Appropriate statistical techniques were employed in the data analyses. The findings show that women are greatly involved in the production, processing and marketing of food crops, especially cassava, which is one of the staple foods in sub-Saharan Africa.

The formation of composite films of double-stranded DNA and cationic lipid molecules (octadecylamine, ODA) and the hybridization of complementary single-stranded DNA molecules in such composite films are demonstrated. The immobilization of DNA is accomplished by simple immersion of a thermally evaporated ODA film in the DNA solution at close to physiological pH. The entrapment of the DNA molecules in the cationic lipid film is dominated by attractive electrostatic interaction between the negatively charged phosphate backbone of the DNA molecules and the protonated amine molecules in the thermally evaporated film and has been quantified using quartz crystal microgravimetry (QCM).
