Larval Performance And Kill Rate Of Convergent Ladybird Beetles, Hippodamia Convergens, On Black Bean Aphids, Aphis Fabae, And Pea Aphids, Acyrthosiphon Pisum, Travis M. Hinkelman, Brigitte Tenhumberg

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Generalist predator guilds play a prominent role in structuring insect communities and can contribute to limiting population sizes of insect pest species. A consequence of dietary breadth, particularly in predatory insects, is the inclusion of low-quality, or even toxic, prey items in the predator’s diet. Consumption of low-quality prey items reduces growth, development, and survival of predator larvae, thereby reducing the population sizes of generalist predators. The objective of this paper was to examine the effect of a suspected low-quality aphid species, Aphis fabae (Scopoli) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), on the larval performance of an abundant North American predator, Hippodamia convergens (Guérin-Méneville) …

Chemical Ecology, Population Dynamics And Insecticide Susceptibility Of Lesser Mealworm Alphitobius Diaperinus (Panzer) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), Narinderpal Singh

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The lesser mealworm, Alphitobius diaperinus (Panzer) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), is a serious, cosmopolitan pest present in poultry production facilities, where it slows down weight gain in chicks, carries disease–causing organisms, and causes damage to poultry insulation. The first study estimated that the lesser mealworm densities in poultry litter applied to pastures were 3.5, 2.2 and 0.4 million larvae, adults and pupae, respectively, per hectare in Savoy, Arkansas. The repercussions of these adult beetles are that they often disperse to and reinfest poultry houses with the potential to vector disease to poultry, and disperse to invade human dwellings resulting in litigation. The …

Episodic Radiations In The Fly Tree Of Life, Brian M. Wiegmann, Michelle D. Trautwein, Isaac S. Winkler, Norman B. Barr, Jung-Wook Kim, Christine Lambkin, Matthew Bertone, Brian Cassel, Keith Bayless, Alysha Heimberg

Dartmouth Scholarship

Flies are one of four superradiations of insects (along with beetles, wasps, and moths) that account for the majority of animal life on Earth. Diptera includes species known for their ubiquity (Musca domestica house fly), their role as pests (Anopheles gambiae malaria mosquito), and their value as model organisms across the biological sciences (Drosophila melanogaster). A resolved phylogeny for flies provides a framework for genomic, developmental, and evolutionary studies by facilitating comparisons across model organisms, yet recent research has suggested that fly relationships have been obscured by multiple episodes of rapid diversification. We provide a phylogenomic …

Ecology And Systematics Of Coleoptera In Woody Debris Of Eastern North American Forests, Michael Leslie Ferro Jan 2011

Ecology And Systematics Of Coleoptera In Woody Debris Of Eastern North American Forests, Michael Leslie Ferro

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Dead wood is a largely unexplored reservoir of taxonomic diversity and its ecology is poorly known despite its use as fuel and its roles in the carbon cycle and healthy ecosystems. During this research 15 new species of dead wood associated rove beetles (Staphylinidae: Pselaphinae) in the genus Sonoma Casey were discovered and described. Sonoma tolulae (LeConte) was redescribed. Taxonomic issues obfuscated the identity of another dead wood associate, Thoracophorus costalis (Erichson) (Staphylinidae: Osoriinae). Examination of holotypes resulted in the discovery of two nomenclatural synonyms: T. longicollis Motschulsky, and T. fletcheri Wendeler. An inexpensive emergence chamber used to collect insects …

The Evolution Of Food Preferences In Coccinellidae, José Adriano Giorgi, Natalia J. Vandenberg, Joseph V. Mchugh, Juanita A. Forrester, S. Adam Ślipiński, Kelly B. Miller, Lori R. Shapiro, Michael F. Whiting Jan 2009

The Evolution Of Food Preferences In Coccinellidae, José Adriano Giorgi, Natalia J. Vandenberg, Joseph V. Mchugh, Juanita A. Forrester, S. Adam Ślipiński, Kelly B. Miller, Lori R. Shapiro, Michael F. Whiting

USDA Systematic Entomology Laboratory

Despite the familiarity and economic significance of Coccinellidae, the family has thus far escaped analysis by rigorous phylogenetic methods. As a result, the internal classification remains unstable and there is no framework with which to interpret evolutionary events within the family. Coccinellids exhibit a wide range of preferred food types spanning kingdoms, and trophic levels. To provide an evolutionary perspective on coccinellid feeding preferences, we performed a phylogenetic analysis of 62 taxa based on the ribosomal nuclear genes 18S and 28S. The entire dataset consists of 3957 aligned nucleotide sites, 787 of which are parsimony informative. Bayesian and parsimony analyses …

Succession Of Coleoptera On Freshly Killed Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda L.) And Southern Red Oak (Quercus Falcata Michaux) In Louisiana, Stephanie Gil

LSU Master's Theses

Wood is important in forest ecology because its large biomass serves as a nutritional substrate and habitat for many organisms, including Coleoptera, and beetles contribute greatly to nutrient recycling in forests. Overlapping complexes of beetles invade dead wood according to the species of tree, ambient conditions, and most importantly, stage of decomposition. Beetle succession was studied in loblolly pines (Pinus taeda L.) and southern red oaks (Quercus falcata Michx.) by documenting beetle arrival and residency in cut, reassembled, and standing bolts. Twelve trees of each species at Feliciana Preserve in West Feliciana parish, LA were felled during October 2004 and …

Case 3314: Stegopterus Burmeister & Schaum, 1840 And Trichiotinus Casey, 1915 (Insecta, Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae): Proposed Conservation, Andrew Smith

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

The purpose of this application, under Article 23.9.3 of the Code, is to conserve the names of two well-established genera of cetoniine scarab beetles, Stegopterus Burmeister & Schaum, 1840 and Trichiotinus Casey, 1915. Stegopterus Burmeister & Schaum is a junior synonym of Tetrophthalmus Kirby, 1827 and Trichiotinus Casey a junior synonym of Trichinus Kirby, 1827. The two junior names are in prevailing use and it is proposed that they be conserved by suppression of both Kirby's names.

Phylogenetic Revision Of The Genus Mesynodites Reichardt (Coleptera: Histeridae: Hetaeriinae), Alexey K. Tishechkin Jan 2005

Phylogenetic Revision Of The Genus Mesynodites Reichardt (Coleptera: Histeridae: Hetaeriinae), Alexey K. Tishechkin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Mesynodites is the largest genus within the exclusively inquilinous (social insect-associated) histerid beetle subfamily Hetaeriinae (Insecta: Coleoptera: Histeridae). The 44 described species are systematically revised, and new taxa are described based on newly discovered species and the results of a cladistic analysis. The work was based on available type specimens representing 42 species and approximately 2500 specimens of non-type material. Phylogenetic hypotheses were based on maximum parsimony analysis of 150 morphological characters derived from a selection of Mesynodites species and representatives of related genera. This analysis confirmed that, in its current concept, Mesynodites is not a monophyletic taxon. Species included …

Revision Of Pocadius Erichson (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), Andrew R. Cline

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A revision of Pocadius Erichson (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) was completed. A total of 46 species were (re)described, including 25 new species, a key to species constructed, and phylogenetic analysis performed. Taxonomic changes, including nomenclatural emendations, reinstatement of species, and description of new taxa, within this dissertation do not constitute formal changes as defined by the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Illustrations of the genitalia, key characters, and dorsal habitus of species are provided. The phylogeny demonstrates a monophyletic Pocadius. The phylogeny suggests a Palearctic origin of the genus with subsequent speciation into the Old World tropics and New World. Host specialization …

Case 3237: Leucopelaea Albescens Bates, 1891 (Insecta, Coleoptera): Proposed Validation Of The Lectotype Designation, Andrew Smith

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

The purpose of this application is to validate the lectotype designation of Leucopelaea albescens Bates, 1891 under Article 86.1.2 of the Code. The nominal species has very recently been considered a junior synonym of Platycoelia lutescens Blanchard, 1851, the name for a scarab beetle (family SCARABAEIDAE) from the Andes in Ecuador, Peru and southern Colombia. The lectotype designation was made under the provisions of the third (1985) edition of the Code in a paper that was accepted for publication in November 1999. However, the paper was not published until May 2000, after the fourth (1999) edition of the Code had …

Description Of The First-Instar Larva Of Geocharidius (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Trechitae) With A Discussion Of The Phylogeny Of The Subtribe Anillina, Vasily V. Grebennikov Jan 2002

Description Of The First-Instar Larva Of Geocharidius (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Trechitae) With A Discussion Of The Phylogeny Of The Subtribe Anillina, Vasily V. Grebennikov

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

This paper describes the first-instar larva of Geocharidius Jeannel, a species from Mexico, which is the second record of an Anillina (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Trechitae) larva; previously described was a species of the European genus Typhlocharis. Larvae of these two genera share ten synapomorphic characters, which support the monophyletic origin of Anillina. Sister-group relationships of Anillina with Tachyina + Xystosomina are proposed on the basis of three shared larval synapomorphies: seta LA5 of ligula absent; coronal suture in first-instar larvae very short or absent; second- third-instar larvae have none or one secondary seta on lateral sides of stipes and labium and …

Distribution, Ecology, And Population Dynamics Of The American Burying Beetle [Nicrophorus Americanus Olivier (Coleoptera, Silphidae)] In South-Central Nebraska, Usa, Jon C. Bedick, Brett C. Ratcliffe, W. Wyatt Hoback, Leon G. Higley

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

The endangered American burying beetle, Nicrophorus americanus Olivier, was previously widespread throughout eastern North America. In the past century numbers of this beetle have drastically declined and currently remnant populations are known from only six states despite intensive surveying efforts conducted for the last nine years. Efforts aimed at discovering and managing remnant populations have been generally limited by a lack of knowledge concerning N. americanus biology. We used baited pitfall traps to define the range of the Gothenburg, Nebraska, population of N. americanus. Using mark-recapture techniques, we estimate that the annual Gothenburg population consists of more than one …
