Insect frass fertilizer is emerging as a sustainable and novel input for improving soil health and crop production; however, research attention on its safety and microbial properties remains limited. Here, we evaluated the levels of heavy metals, pathogens, diversity, abundance, composition and functional roles of bacteria and fungi in frass fertilizer produced by eight edible insect species. Our results revealed the absence of Salmonella spp. In the frass fertilizers produced by all insect species, while the levels of other pathogens and heavy metals were within permissible limits for organic fertilizers. We found that 79–86 % of the variations in bacterial …

Dung beetle larvae are consumed globally, yet their gut microbiota across different geographical locations remains largely unexplored. This study examined the diversity and composition of the gut microbiota of two edible dung beetle species, Cetonia aurata and Rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes sp.), from three sites in Kenya. Using advanced molecular techniques, bacterial and fungal communities were sequenced. The most abundant bacterial phyla in C. aurata were Firmicutes (42.10%) and Bacteroidota (32.50%), while Oryctes sp. had higher levels of Proteobacteria (35.00%), Actinobacteriota (11.40%) and Desulfobacterota (7.40%). Fungal communities were dominated by Lecanoromycetes (92.60%) in Oryctes sp. and Saccharomycetes (92.60%) in C. aurata. …

The Fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lep.: Noctuidae) a destructive invasive pest, poses a significant threat to maize cultivation in Africa, highlighting the need for a better understanding the factors affecting its prevalence. In this study we utilized the Maxent modelling approach to assess the impact of environmental and terrestrial parameters on the spread of FAW in Africa. We compared four different models based on their predictive accuracy: the most comprehensive model, which included bioclimatic factors, landscape structure, and FAW phenology, achieved an accuracy of 0.902. In contrast, models using only single categories of variables yielded lower accuracies, …

The global human population is rapidly increasing, escalating interactions of people, animals and the environment. This has led to more convoluted health challenges, for which African smallholder farmers bear the brunt. The One Health (OH) approach recognises the interconnectedness of these health challenges and thus follows a transdisciplinary approach involving diverse stakeholders to address them. Although there have recently been global concerted efforts and studies on OH, an information gap exists in Africa, particularly regarding smallholder farmers and their needs. Additionally, evaluation frameworks and outcome metrics for OH initiatives are still unclear. Thus, this study was conducted to critically map …

Microsporidia MB is an endosymbiont which naturally infects Anopheles mosquitoes. Due to its ability to block Plasmodium transmission, it shows potential as a bio-based agent for the control of malaria. Its self-sustainability is promising, as it can spread through both vertical and horizontal transmissions. However, its low prevalence in mosquito populations remains a challenge. We develop an eco-epidemiological mathematical model describing the co-dynamics of Microsporidia MB (within mosquito population) and malaria (within human population). The model is used to assess the potential of Microsporidia MB-infected mosquitoes on the control of malaria infection. The results on the basic reproduction numbers, the …

Increasing interest in consuming insects is accelerating the expansion of the fortified snacks market. However, there is limited knowledge of the drivers of consumers to appreciate the role of desert locust [DL] Schistocerca gregaria Forskål as emerging functional ingredient for use in the food industry. Here, we evaluated the nutrient profile and functional properties of wheat breads fortified with powder from captive mass reared DL. The crude protein values of processed DL meal fed on three different food plants ranged between 40 and 56 %. The specific volume and firmness of the breads correlated positively and negatively, respectively, with incremental …

Diversity And Activity Of Ground-Dwelling Spiders (Araneae) In Four Sub-Communities In A Degraded Oak Woodland At The Chicago Botanic Garden, Cook County, Illinois, James F. Steffen, Michael L. Draney
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Ground-dwelling spiders were sampled using pitfall traps over a twelve-month period from four sub-communities within a 40-ha oak woodland complex in northern Cook County, Illinois. Mesic and dry mesic oak woodland, mesic upland forest, buckthorn dominated mesic oak savanna and a mesic woodland control, where no restoration management is planned, were sampled. Fifty-five species within 44 genera and 18 families were trapped. The results suggest negative correlations between non-native spider abundance and spider species richness. Also, phenology of the various species indicates that a year-round inventory is necessary to adequately sample ground-dwelling spider assemblages. Possibilities of using Bathyphantes concolor (Wider) …

Biology And Larval Morphology Of Agrilus Subcinctus (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), With Comparisons To The Emerald Ash Borer, Agrilus Planipennis, Toby R. Petrice, Robert A. Haack, John S. Strazanac, Jonathan P. Lelito
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), is an exotic invasive pest of ash (Fraxinus spp.) trees that was first discovered in North America in 2002. There has been concern that surveyors could confuse immature stages of EAB with A. subcinctus Gory, an ash borer native to North America. We conducted studies in 2006-2009 in southern Michigan to determine biological and morphological characters for distinguishing immature A. subcinctus and EAB life stages. Agrilus subcinctus adults were captured on yellow sticky cards from late May through mid-August, with peak flight occurring in June. Agrilus subcinctus egg laying began in …

Odonata Of Coastal Peatland Habitats Adjacent To Lake Superior In Wisconsin, Robert B. Dubois, Julie M. Pleski, William A. Smith, Eric J. Epstein
The Great Lakes Entomologist
We sampled adults and exuviae of Odonata in eleven coastal fens and poor fens near Lake Superior in Douglas, Bayfield, and Ashland counties in Wisconsin to determine species that were breeding in these areas, and gain knowledge about their relative abundances, flight periods, and nymphal habitats. The flora in these fens was characterized by mats of Sphagnum mosses, a variety of ericaceous shrubs, and a number of sedges, among which Carex lasiocarpa Ehrhart (slender sedge) was most dominant. We averaged seven visits per site from early June through September, 2004, to cover the flight periods of most species of Odonata …

Simulation Of The Effects Of Stand Factors On Spruce Budworm (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), W. P. Kemp, J. P. Nyrop, G. A. Simmons
The Great Lakes Entomologist
A model was developed to simulate the life history of instar-I through instar-I1 spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana (Clemens). Particular emphasis was given to the redistribution phases during spring and fall and the factors affecting budworm survival. Analyses included the effects of aggregated stand types, temperature, cloud cover, open areas, and the species distribution, on redistribution mortality. Of those stand factors examined, open area and non-host percentages were the most important in regulating redistribution survival.

Size Reduction Southward In Michigan's Mustard White Butterfly, Pieris Napi (Lepidoptera: Pieridae), W. H. Wagner Jr., Michael K. Hansen
The Great Lakes Entomologist
[Excerpt]
The mustard white, Pieris napi (Linnaeus) is generally considered to be a circumboreal species or species-complex. Much disagreement exists regarding the classification in this group, the members of which are extremely diverse, especially in Eurasia. There is evidently "a continuous range of differentiation, from local populations, through subspecies, to species, which nomenclature cannot fully reflect" (Bowden 1972). In North America the major controversy has been whether the so-called West Virginia white, P. virginiensis Edwards, should be separated as a distinct species. Most writers today agree that it should. Of the mustard white in the Great Lakes area, the local …

Advancing Butterfly Systematics Through Genomic Analysis, Jing Zhang, Qian Cong, Jinhui Shen, Leina Song, Nick V. Grishin
The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey
Within the framework of an ongoing comparative genomic study of global butterfly diversity, we construct phylogenetic trees combining all protein-coding genes assembled from the whole genome shotgun data. When viewed in the context of current taxonomy and phenotypic knowledge, the genome-wide phylogeny points to further advances in butterfly systematics, which are presented here. We assign major clades with comparable levels of genetic divergence to the same taxonomic rank and apply criteria involving relative population divergence and gene flow to define species boundaries. As a result, one genus, 13 subgenera, 62 species, and five subspecies are proposed as new (type species …

Undergraduate Honors Theses
The salt tolerant mosquito species Aedes taeniorhynchus has been observed in high salinity and ammonia conditions. Previous studies indicate Na+/K+ ATPase (NKA), the proton pump vacuolar-type H+ ATPase (VHA) and sodium-dependent cation-chloride cotransporters (NKCC’s) in sodium secretion in larval Aedes taeniorhynchus. However ammonia transporter such as Rh-protein, Amt1, and Amt2 have only been characterized in Aedes taeniorhynchus’s fresh water relative Aedes aegypti. Our research exhibits the expression of these transporters in A.taeniorhynchus using immunohistochemistry techniques. Evidence of VHA and NKA function in ammonia transport was characterized in vivo using drug antagonists in varying saline and ammonia concentrations. Ammonia flux rates …

Grapevine phylloxera Daktulosphaira vitifoliae Fitch (Hemiptera: Phylloxeridae) has been present in Australia for almost 150 years but has not spread to south-west Western Australia, in part due to the relative isolation of the region. Recent improvements in tourist access, with interstate flights now arriving at Busselton Margaret River Airport, raise concerns about potential phylloxera introductions via wine tourism. In this paper, we simulate the potential economic impact on the Western Australian winegrape industry following a hypothetical arrival event in the Margaret River wine region. We use soil texture maps to assess the suitability of winegrape-growing areas to phylloxera establishment and …

A Checklist Of Illinois Centipedes (Chilopoda), Gerald Summers, J. A. Beatty, Nanette Magnuson
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Records for 45 centipede species occurring in Illinois are given with a brief discussion of general habitat features and the effects of certain environmental factors on specific distribution patterns. The chilopod fauna of Illinois includes species from southeastern, western, and northern physiographic regions and represents a richer mixture of chilopod species than is found in any adjacent state.

The Great Lakes Entomologist
The distribution of Michigan Bombinae was first studied by Milliron (1939). Records of Michigan bumblebees were included in Cockerell (1916) Franklin (1912). Lutz and Cockerell (1920). and Mitchell (1962). Other major studies in the Great Lakes Region were Chandler (1950) for Indiana, Medler and Carney (1%3) for Wisconsin, Husband (1966) for Michigan, Macfarlane (1974) for Ontario, LaBerge and Webb (1962) for Nebraska, Stevens (1948) for North Dakota, Frison (1926) for Illinois, and Neave (1933) for Manitoba. The purpose of this paper is to add to the information presented by Milliron (1939) and to complement the works by Chandler, Medler and …
