Intraspecific Variation In Taxonomic Characteristics Of The Mayfly Potamanthus Myops (Walsh), Robert J. Lord, Peter G. Meier Oct 2017

Intraspecific Variation In Taxonomic Characteristics Of The Mayfly Potamanthus Myops (Walsh), Robert J. Lord, Peter G. Meier

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Data collected from an ecological study of the mayfly Potamanthus rnyops (Walsh) in Michigan showed intraspecific variability in taxonomic characteristics that have been employed by previous investigators for species separation. Nymphal dorsal maculation patterns varied considerably within a single population. Also, the ratio of mandibular tusk length to head length increased with successive nymphal instars. Certain adult taxonomic characteristics, particularly relative male imago eye size and distance of separation, were either too poorly defined or too variable to be conclusive in species identification.

Weights Of Polia Grandis Pupae Reared At Two Constant Temperatures (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), William E. Miller Oct 2017

Weights Of Polia Grandis Pupae Reared At Two Constant Temperatures (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), William E. Miller

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Sibling Polia grandis (Boisduval) larvae were reared at two constant temperatures on fresh foliage of quaking aspen (Populus tvemuloides Michx.). Female pupae developing at 25°C were 24% heavier than those developing at 30°C and corresponding males were 32% heavier. Duration of the larval period averaged 51 days at the former temperature and 41 days at the latter. Based on other Lepidoptera, a 24% change in pupal weight affects fecundity by 28 to 130 eggs per female. Fluctuations in larval temperature regime might induce size and fecundity variation in natural populations of grandis and other Lepidoptera.

The Distribution Of Corydalus Cornutus (Linnaeus) And Nigronia Serricornis (Say) (Megaloptera: Corydalidae) In Michigan, Allen W. Knight, Clifford A. Siegfried Oct 2017

The Distribution Of Corydalus Cornutus (Linnaeus) And Nigronia Serricornis (Say) (Megaloptera: Corydalidae) In Michigan, Allen W. Knight, Clifford A. Siegfried

The Great Lakes Entomologist

(excerpt)

The distribution of the hellgrammite [Corydalus cornutus (Linnaeus)] and the sawcombed fishfly [Nigronia serricornis (Say)] in Michigan was determined as part of an investigation of the biology of these large Megalopterans (Knight and Simmons, 1975a, 1975b). Megalopteran larvae are some of the largest aquatic insects, with a maximum length of approximately 84 mm. They are robust larvae with paired lateral abdominal appendages on segments 1-8 and a pair of anal prolegs bearing two strong hooks. They are fiercely predaceous and generally insectivorous, feeding chiefly on larvae of Simulium, Cheumatopsyche, Hydropsyche and Chironomidae, but eating almost anything they can subdue, …

An Annotated List Of The Cerambycidae Of Michigan (Coleoptera) Part Ii, The Subfamilies Lepturinae And Lamiinae, D.C. L. Gosling, N. M. Gosling

The Great Lakes Entomologist

(excerpt)

This is a continuation of Part I of an annotated list of the Cerambycidae known from Michigan, and includes the remaining subfamilies Lepturinae and Lamiinae. The format is similar to that used in Part I. We have largely followed the systematic order of Chemsak and Linsley (1975) in this part of the list. Keys for the identification of adult Lepturinae can be found in Linsley and Chemsak (1972; in press). References to keys for adult Lamiinae are listed under that subfamily. Many larvae may be identified through the keys in Craighead (1923), but not all Michigan species are covered

The continuing demand for general references and aids to identification of Ephemeroptera has undoubtedly prompted the recent reprinting of The Mayflies. . . of Illinois. A two-page preface by George F. Edmunds, Jr. dealing with taxonomic and nomenclatural changes since the original 1953 publication has been added and will serve as an adequate aid to those unfamiliar with changing concepts in mayfly systematics. The reprinting is of high quality with the large number of figures having been excellently reproduced in this hard-bound edition.

Don't let the price tag frighten you. This is a book you will turn to again and again, in fact every time you pick up a moth or butterfly and wonder if it is one of those on which Asher Treat found mites. The quotation on the fly leaf gives an insight into the enthusiasm and curiosity, as well as the thoroughness of Asher Treat. "Whether in the field, at home, or in a museum collection, the search for mites on insect hosts is an adventure as exciting as any treasure hunt. Every insect, looked at closely enough to …

This work is advertised as a catalog of the Carabidae of Quebec, with annotations concerning distribution and bionomics of the various Quebec species. Mr. Larochelle's long range plan is aimed at a complete study of "the ecology, the biology, and the dynamics of those marvelous insects." This, therefore, appears to be the first part of a set of papers similar to Carl Lindroth's studies of Newfoundland carabids (Lindroth, 1955, 1963).

A New Prey Record For Cerceris Fumipennis Say (Hymenoptera: Sphecidae: Cercerini), Daniel K. Young

The Great Lakes Entomologist

(excerpt)

The sphecid wasp tribe Cercerini is comprised of the genera Cerceris and Eucerceris, the former being widely distributed and the latter restricted to North America All species of Eucerceris for which prey records have been determined utilize snout beetles or weevils (Curculionidae) to feed the young. In North America, known prey records for Cerceris include members of the beetle families Buprestidae, Tenebrionidae, Chrysome- lidae, Bruchidae, and Curculionidae. Some European members of the genus have been

reported to provision the nests with other hymenopterans (e.g. solitary bees of the families Halictidae and Andrenidae) in addition to beetles.

Anaphes (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) Reared From The Eggs Of A Shore Fly (Diptera: Ephydridae), R. W. Thier, Richard S. Zack, B. A. Foote

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Members of the family Mymaridae are obligate parasitoids of insect eggs, and some species attack the eggs of aquatic insects. Only one account of egg parasitism by the mymarid genus Anaphes on Diptera has been disclosed in the literature. Bakkendorf (1971) bred Anaphes autumnalis Foerster from an egg of Tipula autumnalis Loew.

A Possible Case Of Spatial Isolation In Brine Flies Of The Genus Ephydra (Diptera: Ephydridae), Richard S. Zack, R. W. Thier, B. A. Foote

The Great Lakes Entomologist

(excerpt)

During the summer of 1975, adults and larvae of Ephydra riparia Fallen and E. cinerea Jones were encountered in the many brine pools occurring on the property of the Morton Salt Company at Rittman, Wayne County, Ohio (Scheiring and Foote, 1973). Larvae of both species have been reported to be salt tolerant (Bayly, 1972). E. ripariu larvae can survive in salinities up to 80°/oo (Sutcliffe, 1960), and the larvae of cinerea have been encountered by Nemenz (1960) in the Great Salt Lake of Utah at a salinity of 300°/oo.

An Alternative To Using Fresh Alfalfa For Culturing Colias Philodice Eurytheme Boisduval (Lepidoptera: Pieridae), L. J. Crain, S. J. Roberts, E. J. Armbrust

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Various artificial materials were implemented at each life stage of the alfalfa caterpillar, Colias philodice eurytheme Boisduval, to provide effective and economical replacements for alfalfa. Alfalfa substitutes were used for oviposition and feeding. We also developed a favorable laboratory mating environment. Also, the development of a method for removing disease organisms from eggs without increasing egg mortality was an essential facet of this work. The performance of individuals on artificial surfaces was compared with similar individuals reared on greenhouse alfalfa.

Green tape oriented at the top of oviposition cages or near some object which could be held on to while …

Lice, Mites, And Ticks Of Southeastern Wisconsin Mammals, Omar M. Amin Oct 2017

Lice, Mites, And Ticks Of Southeastern Wisconsin Mammals, Omar M. Amin

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Seventeen species of southeastern Wisconsin mammals were found to 6e infected with arthropod ectoparasites other than fleas. One host species was infested with one species of biting lice (Mallophaga), five with five species of sucking lice (Anoplura), ten with at least 16 species of mites (Acari) and nine with six species of hard ticks (Ixodidae). Many new state and/or host records are reported. Host specificity was very pronounced in lice but less marked in ticks and mites particularly in the more common species, ex. Androlaelaps fahrenholzi (Berlese) and Ixodes cookei Packard, respectively.

Lethal Temperatures Of Diapausing Bathyplectes Curculionis (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) A Parasite Of The Alfalfa Weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Ronald H. Cherry, Edward J. Armbrust, William G. Ruesink Oct 2017

Lethal Temperatures Of Diapausing Bathyplectes Curculionis (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) A Parasite Of The Alfalfa Weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Ronald H. Cherry, Edward J. Armbrust, William G. Ruesink

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Seasonally acclimatized diapausing larvae of Bathyplectes curculionis (Thomson) were exposed to extreme hxgh and low temperatu~es to determine lethal temperatures for this stage of the parasite. The possible effects of relative humidity on high temperature mortality, mortality induced by repetitive exposures to sublethal temperatures, and differential survival between sexes, were also measured. The upper lethal temperature for summer larvae was 60°C (LDSo from 2 to 4 h), and the lower lethal temperature for winter larvae was -25°C (LDSo from 0 to % h). Summer larvae showed significantly increased mortality with repetitive exposures to sublethal temperatures (55OC) whereas winter larval mortality …

Feeding Habits Of Wisconsin's Predominant Lotic Plecoptera, Ephemeroptera, And Trichoptera, Theodore J. Shapas, William L. Hilsenhoff

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Feeding habits of nymphs or larvae of 101 species of Plecoptera, Ephemeroptera, and Trichoptera collected from Wisconsin's streams were determined by examining foregut contents. The percent by volume of animal, live vascular plant, filamentous algae, diatom, and detrital material recovered is reported. Plecoptera in the suborder Filipalpia were herbivoredetritivores, and most in the suborder Setipalpia were carnivores. Exceptions were Isoperla bilineata (Say), an omnivore, and Isoperla signata (Banks) and I. slossonae (Banks), both detritivore-herbivores. Except for omnivore Ephemerella cornuta Morgan, Ephemeroptera were detritivore-herbivores. Feeding habits of Trichoptera larvae were diverse. Species of Rhyacophilidae, Polycentropodidae, and Phyrganeidae were all carnivores, while …

It is not necessary to apologize for making known fragments of the insect fauna of the seabeach of Pacific North America. This fauna commands attention. Among its several aspects are (1) it is linear, extending several thousand kilometers from north to south, but being only a few hundred meters wide, (2) its species are all confined within the seabeach limits, and (3) it is a threatened fauna particularly in southern California where the habitat is being rapidly altered by man for purposes of industry, housing and recreation. P~eservation of specimens from this fauna and recording of observations on its …

The Food-Habits And Biology Of Acrididae In An Old-Field Community In Southeastern Michigan, S. K. Gangwere, F. C. Evans, M. L. Nelson

The Great Lakes Entomologist

(excerpt)

Inasmuch as the earth supports a wide variety of terrestrial communities differing in size and species composition, and because no two of these communities are identical in terms of foods and feeders, a correspondingly great complexity of feeding relationships is to be expected. Consequently, food-habit studies must take cognizance of dynamic interplay among many factors which vary with place and time, including that between food availability and the food preferences of consumers. Although ecologists have developed some sophisticated models of the various feeding interactions (e.g., Holling, 1963, 1964, 1966), the number of species whose food-habits and preferences have been …

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Following initial establishment of the parasitoid, Tetrastichus julis (Walker), at a carefully managed field nursery, releases of parasitized Oulema melanopus larvae were made by Michigan county agents at preselected sites throughout the lower peninsula during 1970-74. A follow-up recovery program during 1971-75 revealed continued dispersion and population increase for T. julis. An independent census verified the increasing rates of parasitism.

Neurocordulia (Platycordulia) Xanthosoma (Williamson) In Texas (Odonata: Libellulidae: Corduliinae), Curtis E. Williams

The Great Lakes Entomologist

(excerpt)

The rarity of a species is usually judged by the number of specimens in collections, both private and institutional, and the number of places where it has been found or seen. On this basis, Neurocordulia xanthosoma (Williamson) is rare. Its crepuscular habits, its brown coloration, and its habitat requirements, coupled with the habits of most collectors, have been its protection. Nevertheless, because of its apparent special requirements and man's modification of, and encroachment on, its environment, it may soon be a species of the past.

Studies of insect associates of bumblebees are not new. For example, Tuck (1896, 1897) reported over 50 species of insects associated with nests of British bumblebees. Sladen (1912) discussed nest associates and parasites of European bumblebees, and Plath (1934) published similar data for American bumblebees. Postner (1952) published more detailed data. He listed over 60 taxa of insects associated with bumblebees near Erlangen, Germany.
