Prospects For Biological Control Of The Western Flower Thrips, Frankliniella Occidentalis, With The Entomopathogenic Fungus, Metarhizium Anisopliae, On Chrysanthemum, N. K. Maniania, S. Ekesi, B. Löhr, F. Mwangi May 2003

Prospects For Biological Control Of The Western Flower Thrips, Frankliniella Occidentalis, With The Entomopathogenic Fungus, Metarhizium Anisopliae, On Chrysanthemum, N. K. Maniania, S. Ekesi, B. Löhr, F. Mwangi

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The potential of Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorok. for the control of Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) on chrysanthemum cuttings was evaluated in greenhouse experiments. The fungus significantly reduced both the adult and larval populations of F. occidentalis, although the level of control of larval populations was much lower than for adults. Combined application of M. anisopliae and Methomyl (Lannate®), however, resulted in a significant reduction of both the larval and adult stages. The use of both control agents might be helpful in reducing the selection pressure for resistance to chemical insecticides, thereby delaying or preventing the build-up of resistant populations in greenhouses.

Genetic Changes Within An Aphid Clone: Homogenization Of Rdna Intergenic Spacers After Insecticide Selection, Kevin A. Shufran, Z. B. Mayo, Teresa Crease

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

A single asexual maternal lineage (i.e. clone) of the greenbug aphid, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) was repeatedly selected with the insecticide disulfoton (O,O-diethyl S-[2-(ethylthio)ethyl] phosphorodioate). A parallel colony of the non-selected clone was also maintained. After approximately 200 generations (4 years) of continuous selection, both the selected and non-selected clones were assayed for changes in intergenic spacer (IGS) length variants of the rRNA cistron. No changes in sets of IGS variants were detected in the non-selected clone. However, the selected clone was found to have lost three variants present in the non-selected clone. This probably occurred by unequal …

Book Review: Aphodiinae (Insecta: Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) Fauna Of New Zealand (Stebnicka, Z. T. 2001), Andrew B. T. Smith

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

This is an excellent faunal survey of the scarab beetle subfamily Aphodiinae of New Zealand. It is obvious that Stebnicka has thoroughly searched the literature and has critically examined many specimens (1,5001) from all the important collections. The monograph includes keys to species and descriptions of all taxa. It also contains detailed information on the systematics, biology, and biogeography of the group as it pertains to New Zealand. There are 20 species dealt with in this volume. Nine species are native endemics, ten are adventive, and one is an interception record (with no evidence of persistent populations occurring). The volume …

Butterflies Of The North Okanagan, British Columbia, Canada, David L. Threatful Apr 2003

Butterflies Of The North Okanagan, British Columbia, Canada, David L. Threatful

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

An annotated list of 106 species of butterflies known to occur in the north Okanagan area of British Columbia, Canada is presented. Information is provided on flight phenology, elevation and habitat for each species. Field work over the past 100 years shows that this is one of the premiere areas in Canada for butterfly species diversity. More than one third of all known Canadian butterflies have been found in this small area.

Comparison Of Chlorophyll And Carotenoid Concentrations Among Russian Wheat Aphid (Homoptera: Aphididae)-Infested Wheat Isolines, Tiffany Heng-Moss, X. Ni, T. Macedo, John P. Markwell, Frederick P. Baxendale, S. S. Quisenberry, V. Tolmay Apr 2003

Comparison Of Chlorophyll And Carotenoid Concentrations Among Russian Wheat Aphid (Homoptera: Aphididae)-Infested Wheat Isolines, Tiffany Heng-Moss, X. Ni, T. Macedo, John P. Markwell, Frederick P. Baxendale, S. S. Quisenberry, V. Tolmay

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), feeding injury on ‘Betta’ wheat isolines with the Dn1 and Dn2 genes was compared by assessing chlorophyll and carotenoid concentrations, and aphid fecundity. The resistant Betta isolines (i.e., Betta-Dn1 and Betta-Dn2) supported similar numbers of aphids, but had significantly fewer than the susceptible Betta wheat, indicating these lines are resistant to aphid feeding. Diuraphis noxia feeding resulted in different responses in total chlorophyll and carotenoid concentrations among the Betta wheat isolines. The infested Betta-Dn2 plants had higher levels of chlorophylls and carotenoids in comparison with uninfested plants. In contrast, infested Betta-Dn1 plants had the …

Evidence Of The Establishment Of Cotesia Flavipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), A Parasitoid Of Cereal Stemborers, And Its Host Range Expansion In Ethiopia, E. Getu, W. A. Overholt, E. Kairu, C. O. Omwega Apr 2003

Evidence Of The Establishment Of Cotesia Flavipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), A Parasitoid Of Cereal Stemborers, And Its Host Range Expansion In Ethiopia, E. Getu, W. A. Overholt, E. Kairu, C. O. Omwega

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Three lepidopteran cereal stemborers, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Crambidae), Busseola fusca Fuller, and Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Noctuidae) were collected from maize and sorghum in Ethiopia. The noctuid stemborers are indigenous to Africa while C. partellus is an introduced species from Asia. In 1999, the Asian stemborer parasitoid, Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Braconidae) was found to be widespread in Ethiopia, even though it had never been released in the country. In addition to attacking Chilo partellus, Cotesia flavipes was reared from B. fusca and S. calamistis. The origin of C. flavipes in Ethiopia may have been Somalia where it was released in 1997 …

Genetic Sexing Research On Screwworms, Steven Skoda, Dennis Berkebile, Margaret Allen Mar 2003

Genetic Sexing Research On Screwworms, Steven Skoda, Dennis Berkebile, Margaret Allen

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Few changes have been made to the basic concepts for using Mendelian, or `Classical', genetic techniques to develop genetic sexing strains of insects since they were first developed in the 1960's. They have been attempted for several species of insect pests with few successes. Scientists at the USDA-ARS Midwest Livestock Insects Research Unit have been developing techniques applicable to `Classical' genetic approaches and, recently, have begun exploring the applicability of transgenic techniques for developing genetic sexing strains of screwworms. Linkage analysis has shown that genes responsible for several mutant lines are not near each other. Cytogenetic techniques are being rejuvenated …

Fixation Of Type Locality For Lycaena Acmon Westwood And Characterization Of The Species And Its Distribution, Paul A. Opler Mar 2003

Fixation Of Type Locality For Lycaena Acmon Westwood And Characterization Of The Species And Its Distribution, Paul A. Opler

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

Lycaena acmon Westwood, 1852 is based on a painting and plate legend in Westwood and Hewitson’s Genera of Diurnal Lepidoptera. The specimen illustrated was located in the British Museum Natural History and is the holotype by monotypy. The accompanying plate legend gives “California” as the type locality. Because the butterfly is a member of a complex of species, now considered in the genus Plebejus (Opler and Warren, 2003), that requires much systematic study, and some confusion exists on the identity of L. acmon, it is necessary to fix a more specific type locality, to characterize the species, …

Corrections To The Eretmocerus (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) Of Egypt And The Validation Of Two New Species, S. Abd-Rabou, G. A. Evans

Insecta Mundi

Abd-Rabou and Evans (2002) described Eretmocerus aegypticus Evans and Abd-Rabou and Eretmocerus parasiphonini Evans and Abd-Rabou. According to Article 16.4 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) (1999), for a name to be available, the author(s) of papers published after 1999, must accompany the description with a statement of intent as to where the primary type is deposited or to be deposited. Since the authors inadvertently did not state where the primary type for each species was to be deposited, the names of both of these species have been unavailable. To rectify this situation and comply with the requirements …

Synonymy Of Rhamphidera Skelley With Bancous Pic, Termitophilous Fungus Beetles (Coleoptera: Erotylidae), Paul E. Skelley, Miguel A. Alonso-Zarazaga

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

The genus Bancous Pic, originally described in the Heteromera (Rhysopaussidae) and later transferred to Cucujiformia (incertae sedis), was found to be congeneric with Rhamphidera Skelley (Erotylidae). Bancous is here placed in the family Erotylidae (Erotylinae, Tritomini) and Rhamphidera is moved into synonymy. This synonymy creates two new combinations: Bancous perplexus (Skelley) and Bancous eureka (Skelley). Bancous is redescribed and a lectotype is designated for Bancous irregularis Pic.

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Olfactory responses of the cereal stemborer parasitoid Cotesia sesamiae to volatiles emitted by gramineous host and nonhost plants of the stemborers were studied in a Y-tube olfactometer. The host plants were maize (Zea mays) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), while the nonhost plant was molasses grass (Melinis minutiflora). In single-choice tests, females of C. sesamiae chose volatiles from infested and uninfested host plants and molasses grass over volatiles from the control (soil). In dual-choice tests, the wasp preferred volatiles from infested host plants to those from uninfested host plants. There was no discrimination between molasses grass volatiles and those of uninfested …

Incomplete Sexual Isolation In Sympatry Between Subspecies Of The Butterfly Danaus Chrysippus (L.) And The Creation Of A Hybrid Zone, G. Lushai, D. A.S. Smith, I. J. Gordon, D. Goulson, J. A. Allen, N. Maclean

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Subspecies chrysippus, dorippus and alcippus of the butterfly Danaus chrysippus differ at three biallelic colour gene loci. They have partially vicariant distributions, but their ranges overlap over a substantial part of central and East Africa, where hybridism is commonplace. We now report that the West African subspecies alcippus differs from other subspecies, not only in nuclear genotype but also in mitochondrial haplotype in both allopatry and sympatry. The maintenance of concordant nuclear and cytoplasmic genetic differences in sympatry, and in the face of hybridisation, is prima facie evidence for sexual isolation. Other evidence that suggests alcippus may be isolated from …
