Effects Of Corn And Selected Weed Species On Feeding Behavior Of The Stalk Borer, Papaipema Nebris (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Leticia J. Alvarado, David B. Hogg, John L. Wedberg

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Experiments were conducted in an outdoor insectary to examine behavioral interactions between fifth instar stalk borers, Papaiperna nebris, and potential host plant species. Plants tested included 6- and 8-leaf stage corn, Zea mays, and ten weed species (six broadleaf and four grass) commonly associated with corn production in southern Wisconsin. Broadleaf plants found to be acceptable hosts included Ambrosia trifida, Arnaranthus retroflexus, Rumex crispus, and Chenopodium album; Asclepias syriaca and Abutilon theophrasti were not acceptable as host plants. Corn and the other grass species (Agropyron repens, Bromus inermis, Dactylis glomerata, and Setaria faberi) were found to be acceptable …

Response Of Saddled Prominent (Lepidoptera: Notodontidae) Pupae To Desiccation, Cold Treatment, And Post-Cold Treatment Incubation Temperature, Peter J. Martinat, Douglas C. Allen

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Saddled prominent, Heterocampa guttivitta, pupae were placed at 1.5oC for 50 to 200 days, then incubated at one of four post-cold temperatures ranging from 10° to 26.7°C. Adults emerged from pupae exposed to all cold treatment periods. A few adults also emerged from pupae that were not exposed to cold. The time required for adult emergence following cold treatment declined with longer periods of cold treatment and higher post-cold incubation temperature. The interaction between these two main effects was also significant. Adult morphogenesis begins immediately after pupation, and continues until interrupted by cold temperature. When pupae were subjected to …

Estimating Parasitism Of Colorado Potato Beetle Eggs, Leptinotarsa Decemlineata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), By Edovum Puttleri (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), E. Groden, F. A. Drummond, R. A. Casagrande, J. H. Lashomb

The Great Lakes Entomologist

A computer simulation was used to evaluate methods for estimating parasitism of Colorado potato beetle egg mass populations by Edovum puttleri. The algorithm incorporated the specific attack behavior of E. puttleri, and a development time for parasitized egg masses of ca. 2.9 times that of healthy egg masses. Of the methods compared, a modification of Southwood's graphical technique was found to be most accurate in relation to the true parasitism derived from the algorithm. A regression equation is presented to correct the error in this method at high levels of parasitism. A second simulation was used to test the accuracy …

Bacteria As Ovipositional Attractants For Aedes Aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae), Dana Hasselschwert, C. Lee Rockett Nov 2017

Bacteria As Ovipositional Attractants For Aedes Aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae), Dana Hasselschwert, C. Lee Rockett

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The effectiveness of selected bacterial species as ovipositional attractants for Aedes aegypti was compared. Bacterial washes, in glass containers, were utilized as ovipositional substrates and subsequent egg counts determined the degree of ovipositional attractiveness. Among others, Bacillus cereus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were noted as being effective attractants. It was concluded that A. aegypti displays discriminatory behavior in selecting individual bacterial species for oviposition.

Attraction Of Acorn-Infesting Cydia Latiferreana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) To Pheromone-Baited Traps, J. W. Peacock, S. L. Wright, J. R. Galford Nov 2017

Attraction Of Acorn-Infesting Cydia Latiferreana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) To Pheromone-Baited Traps, J. W. Peacock, S. L. Wright, J. R. Galford

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Males of acorn-infesting Cydia latiferreana are attracted to an equilibrium mixture of the four isomers of 8, 10-dodecadien-l-ol acetate, the virgin female-produced pheromone. Trap height relative to the height of trees in which traps are placed seems to be a significant factor influencing moth catches at attractant-baited traps. In an oak woodlot and in an oak nursery, catches of male moths were greater in traps placed near the upper periphery of the canopy than at traps deployed at lower levels in the tree. Practical application of pheromone-baited traps in a forest situation will require further study on lure formulation and …

Pheromone Lures To Monitor Sparse Populations Of Spruce Budworm, Choristoneura Fumiferana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), David G. Grimble

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Four types of spruce budworm pheromone lures were field-tested in sparse spruce budworm populations in Maine. BioLures® with constant pheromone emission rates less than 1.0, ca. 1.0-1.5, and ca. 15.0 micrograms of pheromone per day were compared to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) lures with rapidly decreasing pheromone emission rates. Mean trap catch was roughly proportional to lure emission rates. All lures continued to catch moths over the entire flight period but moth catches with the three lowest emission-rate lures were judged to be too low. BioLures with the highest emission rate (15.0 micrograms of pheromone per day) showed the lowest variability …

Observations On The Puddling Behavior Of The Canadian Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly, Papilio Glaucus Canadensis In Northern Michigan, J. Mark Scriber, Matthew P. Ayres

The Great Lakes Entomologist

(excerpt)

The occurrence of "puddling" behavior in Lepidoptera has been reviewed by M. J. Norris (1936) by J. A. Downes (1973) and by P. H. Adler (1982). Butterflies have been previously reported on mammalian dung, urine, perspiration, saliva, salt, blood, campfire ashes, aphid honeydew, tree sap and animal carrion. The rarity of female puddling in butterflies, particularly the tiger swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) has been recently addressed by two studies (Berger and Lederhouse 1985, Scriber 1987).

Comparison of the LDso values of the field populations with the malathion susceptible population indicated that the field populations were ca. 33- to 625-fold resistant to malathion. The composite field population was ca. 243-fold resistant to malathion, and this population was 3.2-fold cross-resistant to …

Courtship Behavior In Habronattus Captiosus (Araneae: Salticidae), Bruce Cutler Nov 2017

Courtship Behavior In Habronattus Captiosus (Araneae: Salticidae), Bruce Cutler

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Courtship display of Habronattus captiosus involves several behavioral elements common to other members of the Habronattus coecatus species group. The one unique element is vibration of the patellae when raised over the opisthosoma. Male-male interactions included an agonistic display and grappling. Fourteen male-female interactions were observed, which exhibited various combinations of display elements. There was one successful mating and one case of cannibalism by a male.

Chrysochus auratus, the dogbane beetle, has been erroneously implicated as a pecan defoliator in the early literature. Alternative scenarios suggest other chrysomelid species that may have been responsible for the defoliation.

Use Of Baited Pitfall Traps For Monitoring Pales Weevil, Hylobius Pales (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Kenneth F. Raffa, David W. A. Hunt Nov 2017

Use Of Baited Pitfall Traps For Monitoring Pales Weevil, Hylobius Pales (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Kenneth F. Raffa, David W. A. Hunt

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Pitfall traps baited with ethanol and turpentine serve as an effective tool for monitoring pales weevil (Hylobius pales) populations. Males and females are equally attracted to this bait. Neither component alone showed any attractiveness. The presence of a pine stem for weevil feeding does not affect the number or sex ratio of captured weevils. The potential of using attraction to baited traps as a sampling method for pales weevil is discussed.

Biology, Injury, And Control Of The European Needle-Bending Midge (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) On Scotch Pine In Michigan, Louis F. Wilson, Frank J. Sapio, Gary A. Simmons

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Contarinia baeri is univoltine in Michigan. Adults emerge in spring, and females deposit eggs in small clusters in the sheaths of new-growth pine needles. Larvae hatch shortly thereafter and there are three larval instars. Larval feeding causes the needles to at first droop, discolor, and eventually drop, reducing the quality of Christmas trees and occasionally killing shoots. Larvae overwinter on the ground in cocoons, and pupate in spring. Adults were suppressed (> 75% control) with formulations of Pydrin® (fenvalerate) and Tempo® (cyfluthrin) applied within a week after adult emergence.
