True And False Foodplants Of Callosamia Promethea (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) In Southern Michigan, W. H. Wagner Jr., Michael K. Hansen, Michael R. Mayfield

The Great Lakes Entomologist

A survey in 1980 of the associations of over 400 cocoons of Callosamia promethea Drury in vegetation along and adjacent to southern Michigan roadsides gave evidence for seven species of true larval foodplants (not including two others known in the area from other studies) and 17 species of false foodplants, the latter determined by the (1) rarity of their association with cocoons, (2) only one or two cocoons per plant, and (3) their proximity to a well known true foodplant. Three species, sassafras, black cherry, and buttonbush, are evidently the most important true foodplants in this area. Comparisons are made …

Resource Partitioning By Two Species Of Stream Mayflies (Ephemeroptera: Heptageniidae), William O. Lamp, N. Wilson Britt Oct 2017

Resource Partitioning By Two Species Of Stream Mayflies (Ephemeroptera: Heptageniidae), William O. Lamp, N. Wilson Britt

The Great Lakes Entomologist

We compared the phenology of nymph development, food type, and habitat selection of two stream mayflies, Stenacron interpunctatum (Say) and Stenonema pulchellum (Walsh) in Big Darby Creek, Ohio. Both species, which grow principally from autumn through early spring, emerged from the stream throughout the summer. The nymphs consumed the same sizes and types of food particles from deposits on stones, mostly in the form of detritus. As a result of morphological and behavioral adaptations, S. pulchellum lived on stones in swift water whereas S. interpunctatum lived on stones in a slower current.

The Influence Of Reflective Mulches And Lettuce Types On The Incidence Of Aster Yellows And Abundance Of Its Vector, Macrosteles Fascifrons (Homoptera: Cicadelidae), In Minnesota, Frank G. Zalom Oct 2017

The Influence Of Reflective Mulches And Lettuce Types On The Incidence Of Aster Yellows And Abundance Of Its Vector, Macrosteles Fascifrons (Homoptera: Cicadelidae), In Minnesota, Frank G. Zalom

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Five commercial lettuce cultivars representing different genetic types were grown through aluminum-coated paper, through black polyethylene film, and on bare soil. For each variety, the aluminum mulch reduced the numbers of Macrosteles fascifrons (St~l), reduced the incidence of aster yellows, and increased yields when compared to uncovered controls. The head lettuce cultivar 'Minetto' was most susceptible on unmulched plots (74.3%) while the leaf cultivar 'Grand Rapids' was least susceptible (33.8%). The latter also had the greatest infestation of leafhoppers which may indicate either resistance to the aster yellows agent or shorter feeding times by the vector leafhopper. The abundance of …

An Investigation On The Larval Habitat Of Five Species Of Tree-Hole Breeding Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae), Lee Mitchell, C. Lee Rockett

The Great Lakes Entomologist

A two-year study on the larval habitat of five species of tree-hole breeding mosquitoes was conducted in the vicinity of Bowling Green, Wood County, Ohio. Ninety-eight tree holes containing mosquito larvae were studied. Larval collections (27,741 specimens) were comprised of Aedes rriseriarus (90.8%), Orrhopodomyia signifera (3.3%), Aedes hendersoni (3.2%), Anopheles barberi (2.7%) and Orrhopodomyia alba (< 0.1%). Chemical parameters (BOD, tannin-lignin, pH, and conductivity) of different tree holes were evaluated. Although different tree-hole species were commonly found in association with one another at breeding sites, ecological differences between species were found in spatial, trophic, and temporal niche dimensions.

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Phasgorzophora sulcata Westwood was the principal larval parasitoid of Agrilus bilineatus (Weber) during a study conducted in a natural oak-hardwood forest in the Kettle Moraine State Forest, Jefferson County, Wisconsin. Mean percent larval parasitism was 10.5%. Mean A. bilineatus and P. sulcata densities were, respectively, 53.0 and 6.1 adults per square meter of bark. The theoretical developmental threshold temperatures for over- wintering A. bilineatus and P. sulcata larvae were 17.8" and 19.l0C, respectively. The peak flight period of P. sulcata (9 July 1980) occurred ca. 3 weeks after the A. bilineatus peak flight (18 June 1980) at about the time …

Oviposition By Dendrosoter Protuberans (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) On Larvae Of Scolytus Multistriatus (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) Occupied By Larvae Of Entedon Leucogramma (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), Bruce H. Kennedy

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Dendrosoter protuberans (Nees) was introduced into the United States from France as a possible addition to the existing spectrum of hymenopterous parasites of the smaller European elm bark beetle, Scolytus multistriarus (Marsham). D. protuberans is an external parasite; it oviposits through bark onto or next to late-instar larvae of S. multistriatus (Kennedy 1970) (Fig. 1).

This appears to be the first record of this European species in North America. Larvae were collected in the summer, and pupae and teneral adults in the early fall suggesting a univoltine life cycle with the adults overwintering.

Differences In Emergence Date And Size Between The Sexes Of Malacosoma Americanum The Eastern Tent Caterpillar (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae), Donald N. Bieman, J. A. Witter Oct 2017

Differences In Emergence Date And Size Between The Sexes Of Malacosoma Americanum The Eastern Tent Caterpillar (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae), Donald N. Bieman, J. A. Witter

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Malacosoma americanum males were smaller and began to pupate earlier than females. Since the sexes spent the same amount of time as pupae, males also emerged earlier. The adaptive significance of these results is discussed. Emergence data revealed an interesting sidelight; no moths emerged from cocoons inside tents.

Fourlined Plant Bug (Hemiptera: Miridae), A Reappraisal: Life History, Host Plants, And Plant Response To Feeding, A. G. Wheeler Jr, Gary L. Miller

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Phenology of the fourlined plant bug, Poecilocapsus lineatus, is presented for southcen- tral Pennsylvania; life history and habits are re-examined. Although breeding was previously thought to occur only on woody plants, we found that nymphs develop on numerous herbs. An extensive list of hosts, more than 250 species in 57 families, is compiled from the literature and the authors' observations; preferences are noted for plants in the Labiatae, Solanaceae, and Compositae. Damage consists of lesions on foliage, the size and shape of the spots varying with leaf texture, pubescence, and venation. Plant response to feeding is immediately visible, the lesions …
