A New Species Of Moranida Mansell From Venezuela (Neuroptera: Nemopteridae), Robert B. Miller, Lionel A. Stange

Insecta Mundi

Mansell (1983) described two new species and genera of Crocinae from Peru and Bolivia bringing the total number of South American species of this subfamily to five species. However, all five species occur well south of the equator. Recently the authors discovered a sixth species in northern Venezuela greatly extending the northern range of the family in South America. This new species belongs to the genus Moranida Mansell. Both adults and larvae were found and are described here with a key to the species of Crocinae of South America. We also found and reared Moranida peruviensis Mansell from Lambayeque, Peru, …

Book Review: Larvas De Coleoptera Do Brasil By Cleide Costa, Sergio A. Vanin, And Sonia A. Casari-Chan, P. Jolivet

Insecta Mundi

This is a remarkable new book which is certainly well above all that has been done up to now in this field. Moreover, it deals with a fauna on which we have very few biological data. One hundred nine beetle families are reviewed, from the curious Micromalthidae to the Curculionidae. Mrs. Costa showed me the proofs of the book in 1987 in Sao Paulo, and I had the opportunity then to admire the good quality and even perfection of the drawings.

Book Review: Biologie Des Coleopteres By Renaud Paulian, P. Jolivet Mar 1989

Book Review: Biologie Des Coleopteres By Renaud Paulian, P. Jolivet

Insecta Mundi

This entirely new book is the first on the biology of beetles since Crowson's book, published in 1981 by Academic Press. This new work in some ways completes Crowson's, but in no way is it a useless repetition. The two books together give a good idea of the biology of this enormous order, here comprising more than 200 families. Paulian's classification is slightly, but not fundamentally, different from Crowson's. There are excellent chapters on endogeous, caverniculous, aquatic, coprophagous, termitophilous, and myrmecophilous beetles. Termitophilous beetles have already been treated well in Termitologia by Grasse (1986, Masson, Paris). Paulian is a well-known …

Identification And Nesting Sites Of North American Species Of Dolichoderus Lund (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), Clifford Johnson Mar 1989

Identification And Nesting Sites Of North American Species Of Dolichoderus Lund (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), Clifford Johnson

Insecta Mundi

The identification of North American Dolichoderus species by-way-of existing keys is unnecessarily arbitrary and misdeterminations are likely between D. mariae and D. pustulatus, the latter species showing most morphological variation over its range. Diagnoses for the four described species and an undescribed form with a revised key and figures are given to aid entomologists working without identified voucher specimens. Nest data for species other than D. pustulatus in the Coastal Plain revealed below-ground nests or structures immediately at the ground sui-face. Colonies of D. pustulatus in Florida and southern Georgia have arboreal nests in the cavities of smaller limbs …

Book Review: Insect Spiracular Systems By T. B. Nikam And V. V. Khole., V. K. Gupta

Insecta Mundi

The authors and the publisher are to be complimented for the production of this book summarizing the various aspects of the morphology, development and physiology of the insect spiracular systems. Emphasis has been given to those aspects of the insect spiracular systems that have received scant attention so far, like functional morphology and ecophysiological considerations. The role of spiraculo-trachial system thermoregulation has been explained and integrated with the role of haemolymph circulation. The biophysical aspects have been fully explained and integrated with morpho-physiological aspects.

Book Review: Glyphipterigidae Auctorum Sensu Lato, J. B. Heppner

Insecta Mundi

This is another volume in the extensive series planned on Palearctic Microlepidoptera (including Pyralidae). The expertise of Dr. Diakonoff, particularly in Tortricidae, provides a welcome coverage for the included species. This is especially true for the previously conglomerated assortment of species placed in Glyphipterigidae by E. Meyrick and the fact that until recently this classification was followed by most works on the Palearctic fauna. The previous concept of Glyphipterigidae has been considerably altered in the past decade; where Meyrick had over 1,200 species worldwide in one family, we now have four separate families and part of a fifth family for …

Book Review: Evolutionary Biology Of Orthopteroid Insects, Thomas J. Walker Sep 1988

Book Review: Evolutionary Biology Of Orthopteroid Insects, Thomas J. Walker

Insecta Mundi

This volume is the proceedings of an international conference on the evolution and phylogeny of Orthopteroidea, held in Siena, Italy, January 1986. The occasion for the conference was the 90th birthday of Dr. Felice Capra, of the Museo di Storia Nutrale di Genova. The proceedings consist of 53 papers, in English, ranging in length from 111 pages (Baccetti) to less than one page of text (Carlberg). Their subject matter is similarly diverse - as one would expect if more than 50 orthopterists were invited to give papers at a conference of this title.

A Checklist Of The Ants Of Wyoming (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), G. C. Wheeler, Jeanette Wheeler

Insecta Mundi

The history of myrmrecology in Wyoming began when Fore1 described a new species, obscuripes in the genus Formica from Green River in 1886, four years before Wyoming Territory became a state. There was a long hiatus until 1932 when Cole cited ten records for Pogonomyrmex occidentalis. Since then a dozen authors have published one to many records each.

During the summers of 1957, 1958, 1961, 1963, 1964,1965 and 1966, while we were still at the University of North Dakota (Grand Forks), we made a dozen field trips into Wyoming to observe and collect ants in 12 of the 23 …

The Status Of The Names Clytus Horridus Leconte And Clytus Leucozonus Castelnau & Gory (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), Richard L. Hoffman

Insecta Mundi

Much of the confusion that has plagued the two species considered here originated from the failure of previous authors to examine pertinent type material. I made a special effort to examine types of as many names as readily available, and in addition appealed to a number of museums and individuals for the loan of (or information about) material of horridus and muricatulus in order to account for the range and variation of these taxa. C. horridus, although widely distributed, is by no means common and many - even large - collections have few if any specimens of it.
