Cucumber Growing, W. R. Beattie Apr 1942

Cucumber Growing, W. R. Beattie

Ba

CUCUMBERS are included among the 20 important commercial truck crops that are shipped to the markets of the United States in large quantities. The area planted to cucumbers for table purposes in 1940 was 42,870 acres, and the crop produced was valued at $4,993,000, as reported by the Crop Reporting Board, Division of Agricultural Statistics, Agricultural Marketing Service. This acreage is exclusive of approximately 91,000 acres of cucumbers grown for pickles and also of the crop produced in greenhouses. This bulletin deals only with the production of table or slicing cucumbers as a field crop and those grown in coldframes, …

The Life History Of The Dewberry Fruit Worm Cacoecia Rosaceana (Harr.) In Utah, Merlin W. Allen May 1937

The Life History Of The Dewberry Fruit Worm Cacoecia Rosaceana (Harr.) In Utah, Merlin W. Allen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study has been to determine the identity and the life history of certain larvae attacking dewberry fruits and foliage in a few sections of Utah. The dewberry fruit worm as it was called until it was definitely identified the oblique-banded leaf-roller, was first observed by farmers at Granite and Butlerville in 1932. Since 1934 it has been found affecting dewberries in other parts of northern Utah.

This investigation was begun in the spring of 1935 and continued until the fall of 1936, being made possible through the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, Department of Entomology, and with …

Forest Fire Damage Studies In The Northeast--I. Bark-Beetles And Fire Damaged Hardwoods, Paul W. Stickel Oct 1934

Forest Fire Damage Studies In The Northeast--I. Bark-Beetles And Fire Damaged Hardwoods, Paul W. Stickel

The Bark Beetles, Fuels, and Fire Bibliography

In reporting the damage to trees scorched lightly at the base by fire the average fire warden and even the technically trained forester is given to stating that little harm has been done providing the tree crowns remain green. Such a statement is far from being correct, failing as it does to take into account the aftermath of insect and fungus damage which invariably follows even the lightest of surface fires. In the case reported herein, over 50 per cent of the fire-scorched hardwoods showed signs of the presence of ambrosia-beetles, whose work, even if the trees continue to live, …

A Study Of The Oviposition And Nymphal Development Of Paratrioza Cockerelli (Sulc) Upon Various Host Plants, Wylie L. Thomas May 1934

A Study Of The Oviposition And Nymphal Development Of Paratrioza Cockerelli (Sulc) Upon Various Host Plants, Wylie L. Thomas

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The potato psyllid, Paratrioza cockerelli (Sulc) as stated by E. O. Essig, (1917) is a native of the western states.

Since the great outbreak of psyllid yellows in Utah potato fields in 1927 much interest has been given to this insect. The close relationship between the nymphs of P. cockerelli and the disease, psyllid yellows, is a well known fact, but as yet the causative factor by which this disease is produced still remains unknown.

Because of the severity of the disease to potatoes and the importance of knowing something of the host plants of P. cockerelli, the writer, …

W. Allen); one male, Agricultural and Mechanical College, Mississippi, August 7, 1922 (H. W. Allen). In the U.S. National Museum, aside from the type and allotype: one female taken as it emerged from the nest of Bembex spinolae, June 6, 1914, Washington, D.C . (J.B. Vestigial Pleometrosis In The North American Polistes Pallipes Lepeletier, Joseph Bequaert Jun 1923

Vestigial Pleometrosis In The North American Polistes Pallipes Lepeletier, Joseph Bequaert

Ba

In the October-December, 1919, issue of this BULLETIN my esteemed friend, Mr. Wm. T. Davis, has published some observations of the common American social wasps, a most welcome addition to the scanty literature of the subject in America. Among other interesting points, he relates several cases in which two, three, or four queens of the common Eastern Polistes pallipes Lepeletier ( = metrica Say; variatus Say) had worked together in establishing a new colony, though in this as in other species of Polistes each queen as a rule starts her nest alone.

8. The South And Central African Species Of The Genus Synagris Latreille (Hymenoptera), Joseph Bequaert Jan 1923

8. The South And Central African Species Of The Genus Synagris Latreille (Hymenoptera), Joseph Bequaert

Ba

This is the first of a series of articles in which I shall deal with the diplopterous wasps of South and Central Africa, south of 10° S. lat. The area under consideration includes the south-eastern portion of the Belgian Congo, or the Katanga district, which in its fauna and flora has many points in common with Northern Rhodesia, and differs considerably from the equatorial Congo belt. Since for lack of material the wasps of the Katanga could not be fully treated before, the present paper will supplement my Revision of Congo Vespidae (1918).

Enkele Beschouwingen Over Kleuren En Kleurgroepen Bij Plooivleugelige Wespen, (1), Joseph Bequaert

Ba
