Spider Community Organization : Seasonal Variation And The Role Of Vegetation Architecture, Cynthia L. Hatley, James A. Macmahon
Spider Community Organization : Seasonal Variation And The Role Of Vegetation Architecture, Cynthia L. Hatley, James A. Macmahon
Green Canyon Environmental Research Area, Logan Utah
The relationship between vegetation architecture and spider community attributes were examined in a big sage community. Spiders were separated into guilds using similarities of species' hunting behavior. Shrub architecture was experimentally manipulated in the field by either clippings 50% of the shrub's foliage to decrease foliage density or tying together a shrub's branches to increase foliage density. Shrub perturbations resulted in changes in the number of spider species, spider guilds and guild importance values. The number on spider species and guilds in the tied shrubs were significantly higher than those in the clipped or control shrubs sampled. Spider species diversity …

Larval Biology Of Some Utah Chrysididae, Bakary Vassery Ouayogode
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Biologies of eight chrysidid species were described. These wasps parasitized bees and wasps collected in trap nests set at several sites in two canyons near Logan, Utah. The completed nests were taken to the laboratory and the parasitized ones were kept for study of the development a l biology and behavior of both host and parasites.
The larval stages of Chrysura smaragdicolor, Chrysura sonorensis, Chrysis parkeri, Chrysis derivata, Chrysis coerulans, Cerotachrysis enhuycki, Trichrysis doriae and Hedychridium solierellae were studied. Omalus iridescens and Omalus purpuratus larvae were observed only in the fifth instar. The major …

Inbred onions, Allium cepa L, were grown with different levels of fertilizer and soil. moisture to determine treatment influence on seed yield. Nitrogen (253 kg/ha) alone or in combination with P (162 kg/ha> reduced plant survival, umbels per plant, pollination index, and seed yield where soil moisture was low but the reduction was nil. or not as severe where soil moisture was high.

One hundred random clones from 'Cherokee' alfalfa (Mediccigo sativa L.) were evaluated by self-(S,), topcross-, and clonal-progeny tests. Clonal progenies were most effective, topcross progenies moderately effective, and S, progenies the least effective in predicting first-cross yield. Forage yield was mostly independent of self-fertility. Nine clones were selected for yielding ability based on the progeny tests. The nine clones, their S, families, the diallel set of single-cross families from the nine clones, and the Syn 1 and Syn 2 generations of 10 synthetic varieties from the nine clones were evaluated. The best single-cross family yielded 150 7c; the best Syn …

For almost a century (42, 139) certain yeast, or yeastlike parasites of fruits and seeds have been known. They occur on a wide variety of crop plants and cause such diseases as stigmatomycosis," "yeast-spot," "eye spot," and "internal rot." They seemingly represent a phylogenetic unit. They have cylindrical or pyriform asci, and the hyaline ascospores often are characteristically arranged in two fascicles lying end to end. All have acicular ascospores. (See figs. 2, a-c; 5 , c; 11, hand i; 12, A; 13, c-h; 15,j-k.) They have similar habitats, and several species may simultaneously occur in the same fruit or …

The California beekeeping industry of more than 600,000 colonies produced in 1965 an income of nearly $8,500,000 (Stanger, 1966). In addition, honey bees are annually used to pollinate California crops worth $200 million. For the past 80 years this import

Path-Coefficient Analysis Of Correlation Between Honey Bee Activity And Seed Yield In (Allium Cepa L.), N. S. Shasha'a, William P. Nye, W. F. Campbell
All PIRU Publications
A path-coefficient analysis was used to furnish information on the inter-relationships of pollinating insect activity and components of seed yield in inbreds of Allium cepa L. The inbreds differed very significantly in their attentiveness to pollinating insects. Only one inbred exhibited a significant correlation (P <0.05 positive) between numbers of honey bees and seed yields. Separating the correlation coefficients into components of direct and indirect effects indicated that pollination attractiveness was not the limiting factor in seed set for inbreds in the experiment. Moreover, most of the variation in seed yield could be attributed to indirect effects on the components of yield, umbels per plant, flowers per umbel, percent per fertilized flower, and seeds per fertilized flower.

The Bees Of Curlew Valley (Utah And Idaho), George E. Bohart, G. F. Knowlton
All PIRU Publications
In America north of Mexico there are an estimated 4,000 species of bees distributed in approximately 110 genera. In Curlew Valley, 132 species in 33 genera have been identified, and approximately 25 additional unidentified species have been collected. It is likely that at least 225 species in 40 genera should be found eventually. The bee fauna of Curlew Valley can be roughly divided into the following 4 categories on a seasonal basis.

Forest Fuel Accumulation -- A Growing Problem, Marvin Dodge
The Bark Beetles, Fuels, and Fire Bibliography
Discusses the problem caused by accumulation of forest fuels in the wild-land forests of the western USA under the policy of total fire protection pursued there for many years, and emphasizes the need to find economical and practical ways of reducing fuel hazards in these forests, especially by means of prescribed burning under conditions in which low-intensity fires can be achieved.

Since or during the completion of my work on the monographic revision of the genus Perdita, published in seven parts (University of California Publications in Entomology 9:345-432, 11:247-350; 14:303-410, 17:1-156, 28:1-124, 28:125-388, 49: 1-196), much new material has accumulated or has been submitted for study and identification. As a result, I have found it necessary to present this supplementary study, and it is expected that other parts may follow, as the topic is far from exhaustion.
In this part some 64 species are treated, of which 32 are thought to be new, and renewed study has revealed new synonymy …

The North American Bee Fauna is composed of over 5,000 species, most of which are nonsocial and make nest burrows in the soil. About 500 species nest above ground in small cavities such as beetle holes, hollow stems and rock pockets or dig their own tunnels in pithy stems or wood. Also, about 100 social species (bumble bees, stingless bees, and the honey bee) establish their colonies in relatively large cavities, both below and above ground.
The honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) was brought to the New World by European colonists. Consequently, on this continent, it had no influence …

Pollen Collection From Alsike Clover By High And Low Alfalfa Pollen Collecting Lines And By A Commercial Line Of Honey Bees, William P. Nye
All PIRU Publications
The collection of alsike clover pollen by high alfalfa pollen collecting (APe) and low alfalfa pollen collecting lines of honeybees and by bees from commercial colonies were compared at Donnelly, Idaho, U.S.A., in an area where alsike clover was flowering. All three lines collected an overwhelmingly high percentage of alsike clover pollen (92-99 %), and there were no significant differences between them. A limited amount of rape pollen was collected every day by all groups, and also a small amount of dandelion pollen on one or two days. Only one (high APC) colony collected pollen from a small nearby field …

Introduction Of Small Carpenter Bees Into California For Pollination 1. Release Of Pithitis Smaragdula, Howell V. Daly, George E. Bohart, Robbin W. Thorp
All PIRU Publications
Pithitis smaragdula (F.) is a bright green, small carpenter bee which is widespread in the oriental region and is known to pollinate economically important plants, especially legumes and cucurbits. About 300 bees imported from Ludhiana, India, were released 10 April 1969, at Davis, California. Subsequent collecting during the 1st season confirmed that one or more generations of the bees had been reared and that Trifolium repens L. was visited for pollen. Although the overwintering bees under observation died from unknown causes, and no living bees were found in 1970, it is possible that the bees survived elsewhere. Ecological factors believed …
