Evaluation Of Host Plant Resistance Against Sunflower Moth, Homoeosoma Electellum(Hulst), In Cultivated Sunflower In Western Nebraska, Dawn M. Sikora
Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Sunflower moth, Homoeosoma electellum, is a serious pest of oilseed and confection sunflowers. In this study, we determine efficacy of resistance against this pest. Thirty commercial hybrids, inbreds, and varieties of sunflowers were tested in replicated field and laboratory studies. Trait efficacy is determined by pericarp strength by means of physical compression tests and damage to achenes. Initial sunflower entries were planted May 2014 and data collection began in early August 2014. A second season was planted June 2015, with sampling beginning late August the same year.
In 2014, oilseed varieties showed a strength average of 2.71 ± 0.11 N …

Analysis Of Cereal Aphid Feeding Behavior And Transcriptional Responses Underlying Switchgrass–Aphid Interactions, Kyle G. Koch
Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Switchgrass, Panicum virgatum L., is a perennial warm-season grass that is a model species for the development of bioenergy crops. However, the sustainability of switchgrass as a bioenergy feedstock will require efforts directed at improved biomass yield under a variety of stress factors. The objectives of this research were to: (1) elucidate greenbug and yellow sugarcane aphid feeding behavior on resistant and susceptible switchgrasses using electronic penetration graphs (EPG), (2) define transcriptional changes before and during insect feeding through RNA-seq to identify candidate resistance genes in a hybrid switchgrass cultivar, and (3) utilize methods in RNA sequencing of insects to …

There are 19 primary types of Onciderini including seven in Oncideres Lacordaire, 1830; two in Hesychotypa Thomson, 1868; and two in Hypsioma Audinet- Serville, 1835. Of the 19 primary types, 18 were described by L. S. Dillon and E. S. Dillon. A brief history of the Coleoptera collection at the MCZ is also presented.

Some Corrections And Remarks Regarding The Nomenclature Of Neotropical Athyreini, Passalini, Phanaeini, Rutelini, Cyclocephalini, Dynastini And Oryctini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea), Auke J. Hielkema
Insecta Mundi
A number of nomenclatural issues regarding Neotropical Scarabaeoidea are addressed. Athyreus soesilae Makhan, 2008 is synonymized with Neoathyreus (Neoathyreus) excavatus (Laporte, 1840) (Geotrupidae: Bolboceratinae: Athyreini). Scalmus Zang, 1905 is replaced with its senior synonym Neleuops Kuwert, 1891, nec Neleurops Kuwert, 1891, and the four species it presently contains are thus transferred to Neleuops (Passalidae: Passalinae: Passalini). The spelling of the name Oxysternon oberthueri Olsoufieff, 1924, a junior synonym of Oxysternon (Oxysternon) conspicillatum (Weber, 1801), is fixed (Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae: Phanaeini). The year of description of Oxysternon (Oxysternon) festivum (Linnaeus, 1758) is corrected, its existing lectotype invalidated, and a new lectotype designated …

Honey Bee Gut Dysbiosis: A Novel Context Of Disease Ecology, Kirk E. Anderson, Vincent A. Ricigliano
Honey Bee Gut Dysbiosis: A Novel Context Of Disease Ecology, Kirk E. Anderson, Vincent A. Ricigliano
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The honey bee microbiota has become a hot-spot of recent research. Highly co-evolved with its host, the hindgut microbiota of a worker honey bee consists of six bacterial species shown to occur reliably in particular proportions. Altered microbiota structure is associated with host deficiencies, and a variety of bacteria found throughout the hive environment can dominate the worker gut suppressing or displacing microbiota function. The synthesis presented here suggests environmental insults alter gut bacterial balance, leading to decreased host function and disease progression. Specific functional groups of native bacteria represent a model system to investigate dysbiosis and the evolution of …

Recently, resistance to the pyrethroid bifenthrin was detected and confirmed in field populations of western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte from southwestern areas of Nebraska and Kansas. As a first step to understand potential mechanisms of resistance, the objectives of this study were i) to assess adult mortality at diagnostic concentration- LC99 to the pyrethroids bifenthrin and tefluthrin as well as DDT, ii) estimate adult and larval susceptibility to the same compounds as well as the organophosphate methyl-parathion, and iii) perform synergism experiments with piperonyl butoxide (PBO) (P450 inhibitor) and S,S,S-tributyl-phosphorotrithioate (DEF) (esterase inhibitor) in field populations. Background: Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is one of the major pests of maize, and is in the same feeding guild of the noctuid pests, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), and H. armigera (Hübner), recently reported in South and North America. The intraguild interactions of these species were assessed in laboratory and field conditions by determining the survival of larvae in interactions scenarios with non-Bt maize silks and ears. Moreover, a video-tracking system was utilized to evaluate behavioral parameters during larval interactions in scenarios with or without food.
Results: In intraguild interactions, S. frugiperda had greater survival (55 …

Coprophagy and probable saprophagy are reported for larvae of two species of chrysaugine moths (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). Larvae of Parachma ochracealis Walker are found in rotten pine wood and mulch in North-Central Florida. Larvae of Basacallis tarachodes (Dyar) inhabit feces of an unidentifi ed small mammal in a cave in Central Florida and seem to be troglophilic. These behaviors are compared to similar ones in Neotropical chrysaugines such as Humiphila Becker and Cryptoses Dyar. Saprophagy and coprophagy are predicted to be more general habits among Chrysauginae.
