Biomass Dynamics Of Tipula (Insecta: Diptera) In Forested Streams Of The Interior Highlands, Arkansas, Samuel B. Mccord, Alan D. Christian, Richard S. Grippo

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Abundance patterns of aquatic macroinvertebrates that utilize coarse particulate organic matter as a food source are important indicators of non--point source pollution associated with silviculture activities. This group, referred to as shredders, typically decreases in abundance as its food source—primarily leaves—is removed from the ecosystem. We tested whether larval biomass of the crane fly Tipula, a common member of the group, was an effective estimator of shredder abundance. Additionally, we used regression analysis to test whether the length to dry mass relationship of Tipula differed among geographic regions, between seasons, and between years. Results did not indicate significant differences in …

Fifty-Four State Records Of True Bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) From Arkansas, Stephen W. Chordas Iii, Henry W. Robison, Eric G. Chapman, Betty G. Crump, Peter W. Kovarik Jan 2005

Fifty-Four State Records Of True Bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) From Arkansas, Stephen W. Chordas Iii, Henry W. Robison, Eric G. Chapman, Betty G. Crump, Peter W. Kovarik

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The terrestrial true bug (Hemipterar: Heteroptera) fauna of Arkansas is poorly represented in the literature. Between 1998 and 2004, we retained Hemiptera specimens collected while conducting a few scattered entomological projects. Ninety-nine species of terrestrial Hemiptera, representing 15 families, were collected from various locations within 9 Arkansas counties. Of these 99 species, 54 are new state records for Arkansas. The majority of these 54 new state records are of common, widespread species that would be expected for Arkansas. Twenty-two of the 54 species have been reported for at least 4 states bordering Arkansas, whereas only 5 species (all Miridae) were …

Characterizing Bean Pod Rot In Arkansas And Missouri, Jeremy H. Taylor, Craig S. Rothrock Jan 2004

Characterizing Bean Pod Rot In Arkansas And Missouri, Jeremy H. Taylor, Craig S. Rothrock

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Green beans are an important crop grown for processing in both Arkansas and Missouri. Green beans are harvested mechanically using non-selective picking fingers. Harvested beans are then transported in bulk to processing plants that are located at various locations throughout the mid-South. Thus, the crop is managed for high quality, avoiding pod blemishes caused by insects and diseases. One of the consistent quality problems that affect Arkansas and Missouri green bean crops is pod rot. Two of the causal agents of pod rot that have been reported by researchers and vegetable companies alike are Pythium aphanidermatum and an unidentified Phytophthora …

Additions To The Aquatic Diptera (Chaoboridae, Chironomidae, Tabanidae, Tipulidae) Fauna Of The White River National Wildlife Refuge, Arkansas, Stephen W. Chordas Iii, Patrick L. Hudson, Eric G. Chapman Jan 2004

Additions To The Aquatic Diptera (Chaoboridae, Chironomidae, Tabanidae, Tipulidae) Fauna Of The White River National Wildlife Refuge, Arkansas, Stephen W. Chordas Iii, Patrick L. Hudson, Eric G. Chapman

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The dipteran fauna of Arkansas is generally poorly known. A previous study of the Aquatic macroinvertebrates of the White River National Wildlife Refuge, the largest refuge in Arkansas, reported only 12 diptera taxa out of 219 taxa collected (Chordas et al., 1996). Most of the dipterans from this study were identified only to the family level. The family Chironomidae is a large, diverse group and was predicted to be much more diverse in the refuge than indicated by previous studies. In this study, Chironomidae were targeted, with other aquatic or semiaquatic dipterans also retained, in collections designed to better define …

Acaricidal Efficacy Of Various Agents In The Treatment Of Naturally Occurring Ornithonyssus Sylviarum (Acari: Macronyssidae) Infestations Of Chickens, Maggie Phillips, T. A. Yazwinski, C. A. Tucker, Jennifer Robins, Jeremy Powell, Linda Stamps Jan 2004

Acaricidal Efficacy Of Various Agents In The Treatment Of Naturally Occurring Ornithonyssus Sylviarum (Acari: Macronyssidae) Infestations Of Chickens, Maggie Phillips, T. A. Yazwinski, C. A. Tucker, Jennifer Robins, Jeremy Powell, Linda Stamps

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

The northern fowl mite (NFM), Ornithonyssus sylviarum, is a commonly occurring external parasite of chickens. Primarily, caged layers have the greatest incidence of this mite, with bird unrest, unthriftiness and lowered production as some of the adverse effects of the infestation. In the current study, birds with natural NFM infestations were randomized into five treatment groups, placed in individual cages in treatment-specific batteries (all in one room), and evaluated for 28 d for infestation quantification by way of index scoring and feather digest. No treatments were 100% effective in eliminating all life stages of the mite. Tetrachlorvinphos in combination with …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The Ouachita National Forest (ONF) was established in 1907 and encompasses 1.8 million acres (728,450 ha) in Arkansas and Oklahoma, almost entirely within the Ouachita Mountains Natural Division. The adult dragonfly species richness, seasonal and spatial distribution, and relative abundance were surveyed during 2002. Fifty-four collections were made at 43 sites during 10-19 May (20 collections), 10-22 July (19 collections) and 9-17 September (15 collections). Literature records were searched, as well as records from pertinent museums and individuals. Eighty-three species are reported here for the ONF, 77 of which were collected during 2002. Nehallenia integricollis newly reported for Arkansas, as …

Nuclear Ribosomal Its Region Sequences For Differentiation Of Rubus Genotypes, Eric T. Stafne, John R. Clark, Allen L. Szalanski Jan 2003

Nuclear Ribosomal Its Region Sequences For Differentiation Of Rubus Genotypes, Eric T. Stafne, John R. Clark, Allen L. Szalanski

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Previous molecular investigations into Rubus species diversity have yielded significant knowledge about species relatedness. However, little work has been focused at the cultivar level. Random amplified polymorphic DNA(RAPD)-PCR studies have successfully differentiated closely related cultivars. The ability to definitively distinguish blackberry and red raspberry cultivars based on other molecular methods could prove useful in many aspects of breeding and proprietary protection. In this study, the nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS) of six Rubus cultivars were sequenced. DNA sequencing revealed little genetic variation among blackberry cultivars, but revealed distinctions between blackberry and red raspberry cultivars. Analysis by maximum-parsimony …

Beetle Diversity In An Eastern Cottonwood (Populus Deltoides Bartr.) Plantation And Adjacent Bottomland Hardwood Forest In Southeastern Arkansas, Michael D. Warriner, T. Evan Nebeker, Steven A. Tucker Jan 2002

Beetle Diversity In An Eastern Cottonwood (Populus Deltoides Bartr.) Plantation And Adjacent Bottomland Hardwood Forest In Southeastern Arkansas, Michael D. Warriner, T. Evan Nebeker, Steven A. Tucker

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Within the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley (LMAV),some lands cleared of bottomland hardwood forests have the potential to return to forest as a result of private sector and government interests in Populus cultivation. Specifically, monoculture plantings of eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides Bartr.) represent an important component of many recent afforestation efforts in the region. The impact establishment of such monocultures will have on native insect communities in the LMAV is relatively unknown. To evaluate this, beetle (Coleoptera) diversity, abundance, and functional distribution were examined within an intensively managed eastern cottonwood plantation and nearby bottomland hardwood forest in southeastern Arkansas. Beetles were …
