Pesticide Use On Crops In Nebraska - 1987, Maurice Baker, Nancy Peterson, Shripat T. Kamble
Pesticide Use On Crops In Nebraska - 1987, Maurice Baker, Nancy Peterson, Shripat T. Kamble
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
This is the third and most comprehensive study of pesticide use on crops in Nebraska. The first was completed in 1978 and the second one in 1982. The first study indicated that approximately 25 million pounds (11.34 million kg) of active ingredients were used on the major crops in Nebraska. This increased to approximately 30.2 million pounds (13.7 million kg) in 1982. The USDA requires accurate information to meet their responsibilities. Thus, this survey was undertaken to determine: 1) the use of pesticides on crops, pasture and rangeland and 2) to identify pest management practices.

Feeding Behavior Of Nephotettix Virescens (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) On Rice Varieties With Different Levels Of Resistance, H. R. Rapusas, E. A. Heinrichs
Feeding Behavior Of Nephotettix Virescens (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) On Rice Varieties With Different Levels Of Resistance, H. R. Rapusas, E. A. Heinrichs
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The feeding behavior of Nephotettix virescens (Distant) on rice varieties with different levels of resistance was studied using an AC electronic monitor for insect feeding (EMIF) system. Varieties used were TN1 (susceptible), IR36 (moderately resistant), and ASD7, IR60, and IR64 (resistant). Six typical waveforms were recorded, and each type corresponded to a certain activity of the insect during the feeding process as indicated by histological sections of the leaf observed. Significantly more phloem feeding was observed on the susceptible plants than on the moderately resistant and resistant plants. Fifty percent of the total test period was spent feeding on the …

Response To Selection For Virulence Of Nephotettix Virescens (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) On Resistant Rice Cultivars, E. A. Heinrichs, H. R. Rapusas
Response To Selection For Virulence Of Nephotettix Virescens (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) On Resistant Rice Cultivars, E. A. Heinrichs, H. R. Rapusas
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Rate of response to selection for Nephotettix virescens (Distant) virulence was studied for 20 generations on five rice cultivars with different levels of resistance. Rate of response to selection on all cultivars varied depending on the measurement criteria. Survival, growth, progeny production, and weight increased, and developmental period decreased, with selection time. Based on survival, the N. virescens population became highly virulent within one to four generations, whereas high virulence as measured by progeny production generally required more generations of selection. Virulence as measured by the ability to vector tungro virus also increased with selection time.

Effect Of Host Plant On The Level Of Virulence Of Nilaparvata Lugens (Homoptera: Delphacidae) On Rice Cultivars, A. H. Bahagiawati, E. A. Heinrichs, F. G. Medrano
Effect Of Host Plant On The Level Of Virulence Of Nilaparvata Lugens (Homoptera: Delphacidae) On Rice Cultivars, A. H. Bahagiawati, E. A. Heinrichs, F. G. Medrano
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The virulence of a planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) biotype 3, reared on rice cultivar ASD7and of N. lugens colonies collected on Mindanao Island in the southern Philippines and reared on the widely grown commercial cultivars IR36 and IR42 was compared. Based on plant damage, insect weight, population growth, and feeding activity, the Mindanao N. lugens colonies reared on IR36 and IR42 were more virulent than biotype 3, although ASD7, IR36, and IR42 have the bph2 gene for N. lugens resistance. These results clearly indicate that in the screening of breeding lines for resistance to N. lugens, it is …

Quarantine Disinfestation A Bibliography With Relevance To Ornamental Plant Material, Kevin Seaton, Daryl Joyce
Quarantine Disinfestation A Bibliography With Relevance To Ornamental Plant Material, Kevin Seaton, Daryl Joyce
Biosecurity published reports
This bibliography has been compiled as part of a programme to develop new and improved techniques for the insect disinfestation of export cut-flowers and cut-foliage. The objective of the programme is to identify the most effective disinfestation treatments. Suitable treatments should kill insects in the flowers without directly injuring the flowers or reducing their postharvest life.
The bibliography presents references relating to the disinfestation of ornamental material (i.e. cut-flowers, cut-foliage, and potted plants). However, it also includes references on disinfestation of fruit, vegetables, and stored grain where this information has some relevance to the disinfestation of ornamental materials. The bibliography …
Plant Age Effect On The Level Of Resistance Of Rice “Ir36” To The Green Leafhopper, Nephotettix Virescens (Distant) And Rice Tungro Virus, H. R. Rapusas, E. A. Heinrichs
Plant Age Effect On The Level Of Resistance Of Rice “Ir36” To The Green Leafhopper, Nephotettix Virescens (Distant) And Rice Tungro Virus, H. R. Rapusas, E. A. Heinrichs
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Plant age of a moderately resistant rice cultivar, “IR36,” had a distinct effect on the level of Nephotettix virescens (Distant) resistance. Plants at 10 d after sowing (DAS) were preferred over those at 20, 40, or 60 DAS. N. virescens survival, growth index, and adult weight were higher on plants 20 DAS than on plants 40, 60, or 80 DAS. Although the total amount of honeydew excreted was similar for “IR36” plants of all ages, the reaction of honeydew on filter paper treated with bromocresol green indicated that feeding in the nutrient-rich phloem was highest on the younger plants. Tungro …

Resistance Of Wild Rices, Oryza Spp., To The Brown Planthopper, Nilaparvata Lugensi (Homoptera: Delphacidae), Wu Jung-Tsung, E. A. Heinrichs, F. G. Medrano
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Of 36 wild rices screened, 19 accessions were resistant or moderately resistant to three biotypes of the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål), and 9 were resistant or moderately resistant to at least one biotype. Resistant accessions were nonpreferred and N. lugens caged on resistant accessions had low food ingestion rates, slow nymphal development, reduced longevity, low fecundity, and consequently low populations. Two wild rice species decreased the percent hatchability of N. lugens eggs. Some moderately resistant accessions have tolerance to N. lugens, as indicated by low plant damage ratings and plant loss and high percentage N. lugens survival and …
Integration Of Host Plant Resistance And Insecticides In The Control Of Nephotettix Virescens (Homoptera: Cicadellidae), A Vector Of Rice Tungro Virus, E. A. Heinrichs, H. R. Rapusas, G. B. Aquino, F. Palis
Integration Of Host Plant Resistance And Insecticides In The Control Of Nephotettix Virescens (Homoptera: Cicadellidae), A Vector Of Rice Tungro Virus, E. A. Heinrichs, H. R. Rapusas, G. B. Aquino, F. Palis
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Combined effects of levels of vector resistance and insecticide application in control of rice tungro virus (RTV) were determined in three field tests. Cultivar “IR28,” with high levels of resistance to the vector, Nephotettix virescens (Distant), had low RTV infection in all treatments including the untreated check. In moderately resistant “IR36,” RTV decreased with an increase in level of insecticide but did not decrease to a level equaling the untreated “IR28.” The N. virescens-susceptible cultivar “IR22” had extremely high levels of RTV infection at all insecticide levels. Economic analysis indicated that gross profit and net gain were highest in …

Illustrated Guide To Integrated Pest Management In Rice In Tropical Asia, W. H. Reissig, Elvis A. Heinrichs, J. A. Litsinger, K. Moody, L. Fieldler, T. W. Mew, A. T. Barrion
Entomology Papers from Other Sources
In the past, farmers in tropical Asia grew traditional rice cultivars and either relied primarily on cultural, mechanical, and physical methods of pest control or practiced no pest control. Pesticide application was limited because the yield potential of traditional varieties was too low to justify additional investments. Although pests destroyed part of each crop, severe outbreaks or epidemics were rare.
The widespread introduction of high-yielding rice cultivars in Asia in the last two decades and the associated changes in production practices have improved conditions for insects, diseases, weeds, and rodents. The higher yield potential of the new rices also made …
