Mortality Impact Of Mon863 Transgenic Maize Roots On Western Corn Rootworm Larvae In The Field, T. L. Clark, D. L. Frank, B. W. French, Lance J. Meinke, D. Moellenbeck, T. T. Vaughn, B. E. Hibbard
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Mortality of western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte) due to feeding on MON863 transgenic maize (Zea mays L.) expressing the Cry3Bb1 protein was evaluated at three Missouri sites in both 2003 and 2004 and at one site each in South Dakota, Nebraska, and Iowa in 2004. To do this, survivorship relative to survivorship on isoline maize (i.e., the same genetic background, but without Cry3Bb1) was evaluated. Comparisons were made using low (1650–2500 eggs/m) and high (3300–3500 eggs/m) western corn rootworm egg densities. Significantly fewer beetles were recovered from MON863 than from isoline maize. Emergence from MON863 as …

Susceptibility Of Cry1ab Maize-Resistant And -Susceptible Strains Of Sugarcane Borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) To Four Individual Cry Proteins, Liping Zhang, Fangneng Huang, B. Rogers Leonard, Mao Chen, Thomas Clark, Yu Cheng Zhu, David S. Wangila, Fei Yang, Ying Niu
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis (F.), is a major target of Bt maize in South America and many areas of the US mid-south region. Six laboratory strains of D. saccharalis were established from six single-pair F2 families possessing major resistance alleles to Cry1Ab maize hybrids. Susceptibility of the six strains was evaluated on diet treated with each of four purified trypsin-activated Bt proteins, Cry1Ab, Cry1Aa, Cry1Ac, and Cry1F. Bt susceptibility of the six strains was compared with that of known Cry1Ab-susceptible and -resistant strains of D. saccharalis. At least two of the six strains demonstrated a similar level (>526-fold) …

Using Video-Tracking To Assess Sublethal Effects Of Pesticides On Honey Bees (Apis Mellifera L.), Bethany S. Teeters, Reed M. Johnson, Marion D. Ellis, Blair D. Siegfried
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Concern about the role of pesticides in honey bee decline has highlighted the need to examine the effects of sublethal exposure on bee behaviors. The video-tracking system EthoVisionXT (Noldus Information Technologies) was used to measure the effects of sublethal exposure to tau-fluvalinate and imidacloprid on honey bee locomotion, interactions, and time spent near a food source over a 24-h observation period. Bees were either treated topically with 0.3, 1.5, and 3 μg tau-fluvalinate or exposed to 0.05, 0.5, 5.0, 50, and 500 ppb imidacloprid in a sugar agar cube. Tau-fluvalinate caused a significant reduction in distance moved at all dose …

Pheromone–Mediated Mating Disruption In The Millet Stem Borer, Coniesta Ignefusalis (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), Ousmane Youm, Yacouba Maliki, David R. Hall, Dudley I. Farman, John E. Foster
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The millet stem borer, Coniesta ignefusalis Hampson (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), is a major pest of pearl millet in the Sahelian region of Africa. The female sex pheromone has been identified and synthesized, and previous research had shown that the synthetic pheromone could cause high levels of reproductive communication disruption in small plots when released at rates of 640 mg/ha/day, using PVC resin formulation renewed every seven days to maintain efficiency. In the present research, in experiments in farmers’ fields in Niger, 86.8% (SE = 2.6%) communication disruption was achieved when polyethylene vials loaded with 0.5 mg pheromone at 400 dispensers/ha were …

Ecology And Management Of The Woolly Whitefly (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), A New Invasive Citrus Pest In Ethiopia, Difabachew K. Belay, Abebe Zewdu, John E. Foster
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Distribution and importance of woolly whitefly (Aleurothrixus floccosus) (Maskell) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), was studied in Ethiopia with an evaluation of treatments against it. Results showed that the pest is distributed in most citrus-growing parts of the country equally infesting all types of citrus crops. Only one pupal parasitoid, Amitus sp., was recorded at Melkaoba. During 2006–2007, eight treatments gave better control of woolly whitefly compared with the control: endod (Phytolacca dodecandra L’Herit) berry extract, white oil 80%, neem oil, omo detergent soap, band application of gasoline, cyhalothrin (karate) 5% EC, selecron (profenofos) 500 EC, and rimon (novaluron) 10 EC. …

Population Genetics Of The Western Bean Cutworm (Striacosta Albicosta Smith) Across The United States, Erica Lindroth
Population Genetics Of The Western Bean Cutworm (Striacosta Albicosta Smith) Across The United States, Erica Lindroth
Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The western bean cutworm, Striacosta albicosta (Smith), is a secondary pest of maize (Zea mays L.) and dry beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in the western United States. Recently, this insect has undergone a major territory expansion into the eastern US and has become a pest throughout much of the Corn Belt. This study was instigated to examine the population genetics of this pest to facilitate control and resistance management, as well as to shed light on the current habitat expansion. To this end, western bean cutworm individuals were collected from 28 different locations across the traditional and expanded …

Biosecurity published reports
Biosecurity is the protection of the economy, environment and human health from the negative impacts of pests, weeds and diseases, including the management of invasive species if they become established (definition adopted by AusBIOSEC).
This requires steps to prevent the entry of harmful organisms, as well as the timely and efficient management of them if they do enter.
Biosecurity threats range from catastrophic diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease, which causes rapid and widespread animal deaths, to more subtle and slower spreading problems such as invasive weeds, mussels that foul vessel hulls and fungus-induced dieback disease of trees. These …

Characterization Of Wolbachia And Its Interaction In Host Mosquitoes, Eunho Suh
Characterization Of Wolbachia And Its Interaction In Host Mosquitoes, Eunho Suh
Theses and Dissertations--Entomology
Wolbachia are maternally inherited, obligate, intracellular bacteria inducing a form of sterility known as cytoplasmic incompatibility. Wolbachia based strategies have been proposed for the control of disease vectors. One example is to use a population replacement strategy to drive into natural population a novel Wolbachia that modifies the age structure of a vector population, reducing disease transmission.
In this research, the effects of a life-shortening stain of Wolbachia (popcorn Wolbachia) are transferred into the mosquitoes Aedes albopictus (Chapter Two and Three) and A. aegypti (Chapter Four and Five). In Chapter Two, the Wolbachia symbiosis significantly reduced fecundity and …

Cat-Facing Insects, Diane Alston, Michael Reding, Marion Murray
Cat-Facing Insects, Diane Alston, Michael Reding, Marion Murray
All Current Publications
There are a number of insects with the piercing-sucking feeding habit that can cause deformity and catfacing type injury to pome and stone fruits, including lygus bug, stink bug, and boxelder bug. Cat-facing injury is caused by puncture feeding in flower buds and fruit. The result is unsightly dimpling, deformity, and scarring of fruit. The name “cat facing” comes from the distorted fruit shape that resembles the puckered cheeks of a cat. In addition to the insects discussed in this section, some aphids and the campylomma bug can inflict similar injury.
