West Coast Rock Lobster Fishery Management Plan 1995 - Draft For Public Comment, M. Moran Aug 1995

West Coast Rock Lobster Fishery Management Plan 1995 - Draft For Public Comment, M. Moran

Fisheries Management Papers

The purpose of this management plan is to regulate fishing for rock lobsters (Family Palimuridae) in waters off the west coast of Western Australia such that the breeding stock of rock lobsters is maintained at a level known to have generated adequate recruitment of young lobsters in the past. This management plan does not constitute a change in the management arrangements for the rock lobster fishery. It essentially replaces the West Coast Rock Lobster Limited Entry Fishery Notice 1993 made under the Fisheries Act 1905 and makes the required changes to wording and structure necessitated by the proclamation of the …

Bag And Size Limit Fishing Regulations From Around Australia - Current Information As At 1 July, 1995 - Third Australasian Fisheries Managers Conference, Rottnest Island, Wa, F. B. Prokop Aug 1995

Bag And Size Limit Fishing Regulations From Around Australia - Current Information As At 1 July, 1995 - Third Australasian Fisheries Managers Conference, Rottnest Island, Wa, F. B. Prokop

Fisheries Management Papers

This paper was originally prepared for the first National Fisheries Managers Conference in 1993. It is now updated and includes the current bag and size limits from around Australia as at 1 July, 1995. It is fairly obvious from this paper that there is a need for more cooperation between the states, particularly for species which have wide distributions. However, regional solutions can be a good approach for specific management needs, while general rules can be made more consistent in a number of cases.

Translocation Issues In Western Australia: Proceedings Of A Seminar And Workshop Held On 26th And 27th September 1994, F. B. Prokop

Fisheries Management Papers

The Recreational Fishing Advisory Committee (RFAC) approved holding this translocation seminar to air the translocation of fish for recreational enhancement in a public forum. This forum will identify issues including establishing common ground between the variety of interest groups which are represented. Contentious areas which require further investigation and consultation should become apparent, and assist the formulation of appropriate policies on translocation for Western Australia.

Population Dynamics Of Oryzomys Palustris And Microtus Pennsylvanicus On The Eastern Shore Of Virginia, John A. March Jr. Jul 1995

Population Dynamics Of Oryzomys Palustris And Microtus Pennsylvanicus On The Eastern Shore Of Virginia, John A. March Jr.

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The population dynamics of Oryzomys palustris, the marsh rice rat, and of Microtus pennsylvanicus, the meadow vole, were determined during a year-long mark-and-recapture study on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Three nights of trapping per month were conducted on two live trap grids totaling 5456 total trap nights. The grids were located on Nature Conservancy land, one in Oyster, and the second at Steelman's Landing, which is east of Townsend in Northampton County Virginia. Trapped animals were evaluated using established criteria. Reproductive activity, age and sex composition, and density of the population, capture probability, survival rate, and recruitment were determined. …

Management Options (Discussion Paper) For The Shark Bay Snapper Limited Entry Fishery, Shark Bay Snapper Limited Entry Fishery Working Group, Doug Bathgate

Fisheries Management Papers

At the Annual Management Meeting of the Shark Bay Snapper Limited Entry Fishery held on 22 July 1994 industry put forward a proposal that supplementary and non-transferable quota that was "lost" to the fishery when a licence holding non-transferable quota was transferred should be retained by the Fisheries Department and leased back to licence holders on an annual basis. As a result of this proposal and the fact that the management arrangements for the fishery are extremely complex and in need of simplification, the Minster for Fisheries approved the establishment of a Working Group to examine the lease-back proposal and …

Management Of The Northern Demersal Scalefish Fishery, Jane Fowler Jun 1995

Management Of The Northern Demersal Scalefish Fishery, Jane Fowler

Fisheries Management Papers

In mid 1994, the Fisheries Department of Western Australia announced that it would prepare a discussion paper setting out options for future management of the demersal scalefish fishery off the Kimberley coast. This paper, which was to be the start of a wider consultative process, was also to include options for possible further development of the trap and line fisheries. This paper is only the first step in a process for developing formal long term management arrangements under the new fisheries legislation, the Fish Resources Management Act 1994. Its aim is to provide some background and to present some management …

Report On Future Management Options For The South West Trawl Limited Entry Fishery, South West Trawl Limited Entry Fishery Working Group

Fisheries Management Papers

As a result of community concern regarding trawling, the current management rules for the South West Trawl Limited Entry Fishery were finalised in February 1989 and the final plan was gazetted in October of that year. However, there was public disquiet about this trawling, and as a result of this disquiet, a research program was initiated by the Fisheries Department with funding received from both the Commonwealth and State Governments. The scientific report, "The impact of trawling for saucer scallops and western king prawns on the benthic communities in coastal waters off south-western Australia" by L J B Laurenson, P …

The Best Available Information - Its Implications For Recreational Fisheries Management, F. B. Prokop May 1995

The Best Available Information - Its Implications For Recreational Fisheries Management, F. B. Prokop

Fisheries Management Papers

Workshop at Second National Fisheries Managers Conference, Bribie Island, Queensland, October 18, 1994. Recreational fisheries management is one of the growth areas in Australian fisheries. The Australian Society for Fish Biology Workshop topic for its 1994 Conference was Recreational Fishing - What's the Catch. It was acknowledged at the ASFB conference that there were generally poor levels of information and for the lower value commercial and recreational fisheries there may be no way to gather definitive research data for the foreseeable future. However, in even the high profile fisheries, public perceptions, attitudes, and political will do not allow for the …

Considerations for Aboriginal involvement in the industry and long-standing as well as recent concessionary arrangements for traditional usage of fish resources are examined. Industry reactions and future plans to accommodate native title in a positive framework are explored.

Reproductive Biology Of The Grass Pickerel Esox Americanus Vermiculatus Lesueur, From The Green Bottom Wildlife Management Area, Cabell County, West Virginia, Ronald Clifton Tipton Jan 1995

Reproductive Biology Of The Grass Pickerel Esox Americanus Vermiculatus Lesueur, From The Green Bottom Wildlife Management Area, Cabell County, West Virginia, Ronald Clifton Tipton

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The grass pickerel, Esox american us vermiculatus LeSueur, is listed as Undetermined on the Vertebrate Species List of Concern in West Virginia. The reason for the West Virginia status is that lentic, vegetated habitats required for spawning by the grass pickerel are limited within the state and are being reduced by agricultural, residential, and industrial developments. Green Bottom Swamp, a naturally occurring wetland of 58 hectares, provides habitat for the grass pickerel. A proposed habitat alteration to add marshland by building dykes prompted this study. Information from this investigation will establish a baseline for reproductive activities of the grass pickerel …

Animal Well-Being In Zoos, Conservation Centers And In-Situ Conservation Programs, John Lukas Jan 1995

Animal Well-Being In Zoos, Conservation Centers And In-Situ Conservation Programs, John Lukas

Zoo and Aquarium Animal Populations Collection

Well-being, as defined in reference to one's welfare, is the condition of happiness, prosperity and good health. In dealing with an animal's well-being, there are two frames of reference to consider. First, biological well-being which encompasses the spacial, social, nutritional, behavioral and reproductive needs of a species. Secondly, cultural well-being of animals concentrating on their perception of happiness, cleanliness, safety and the way the animals are treated by the people who care for them.

In this paper, we are not addressing freedom as a condition of well-being, only happiness, prosperity and good health. Free-ranging wild animals are not free but …

Preserving Individuals Versus Conserving Populations: Is There A Conflict?, Donald G. Lindburg Jan 1995

Preserving Individuals Versus Conserving Populations: Is There A Conflict?, Donald G. Lindburg

Zoo and Aquarium Animal Populations Collection

Summarized briefly, animal liberation/animal rights' valuation of the individual about its zoological taxon or associates in a community is an extension of ethical theory to animals, using the criterion of sentience rather than rationality for ascribing to the individual the right to an existence free of human-imposed pain and suffering. Humans are not entitled to inflict pain of any purpose, according to this view, including the utilization of animals for food or clothing, for scientific and medical experimentation, for recreation, or even for the animals' own survival as a zoological entity. Insofar as the have written on the subject, the …

Wild / Captive And Other Suspect Dualisms, Dale Jamieson Jan 1995

Wild / Captive And Other Suspect Dualisms, Dale Jamieson

Zoo and Aquarium Animal Populations Collection

Dualisms have had a hard time in recent years. Philosophers used to think that facts and values were distinct, and that philosophy and science were radically different enterprises. While scientists employed empirical methods to discover the way the world happens to be, the job of philosophers was to use conceptual analysis to reveal how the world necessarily is. In the wake of the revolution unleashed by Quine in the early 1950s, philosophers either had to learn some science, find another job, or fight an irredentist action on behalf of conceptual analysis that is mainly of interest only to a few …

The Wild And The Tame, Juliet Clutton-Brock Jan 1995

The Wild And The Tame, Juliet Clutton-Brock

Zoo and Aquarium Animal Populations Collection

The Western belief that the world is divided into the "human" and the "natural" stems from the philosophy, first propounded by the ancient Greeks, notably Aristotle, that all living organisms could be placed in a Scale of Nature or Great Chain of Being with "primeval slime" at its base and "Man" at its summit. This belief, which is imbued in Christianity and in all aspects of western civilization, has led to a great divide with "the wild" on one side and "the tame", that is all the animals and plants that are exploited by human, on the other.

Animal Well-Being In The Wild And In Captivity, Stephen Bostock Jan 1995

Animal Well-Being In The Wild And In Captivity, Stephen Bostock

Zoo and Aquarium Animal Populations Collection

I want to compare wild and captivity. This isn't a straight comparison of good with bad. Animals do suffer in the wild, and they are protected in good captivity. I will fill out the details of this in the following sections, before discussing how captivity can be more benign, whether or not it can ever strictly be regarded as better than life in the wild.

What Do "Wild" And "Captive" Mean For Large Ungulates And Carnivores Now And Into The Twenty-First Century, Michael Hutchins Jan 1995

What Do "Wild" And "Captive" Mean For Large Ungulates And Carnivores Now And Into The Twenty-First Century, Michael Hutchins

Zoo and Aquarium Animal Populations Collection

The terms "wild" and "captive" have stimulated considerable debate among academicians, animal protectionists and conservationists. Some argue that animals have a right to freedom and that there is a "moral predis-position" against holding them in zoos (Jamieson, 1985; 1995; Varner and Monroe, 1991). Others argue that modern zoos and their living collections are becoming increasing important to wildlife conservation and science, and that the collective benefits so derived may override this predisposition (Hutchins and Wemmer, 1991; Conway, 1995; Hutchins et al, 1995; Norton, 1995). The purpose of this paper is to explore the concepts of "wild" and "captive" and their …

Population Processes, Kathleen H. Keeler, Anthony Joern Jan 1995

Population Processes, Kathleen H. Keeler, Anthony Joern

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Within the prairies, myriad populations of plants, insects, small mammals, and other organisms form distinct levels of organization. The physical forces of weather and fire and the complex networks of species interactions control each species’s structure and dynamics and determine its abundance or rarity. Variation in population dynamics and interactions over time and space determine the distribution and abundance of species, and ultimately the composition and dynamics of entire prairie communities.

To the casual observer, plant populations on prairies may seem quite static, like museums containing a diverse collection of specimens that can be seen again and again on repeated …

The Warnbro Sound Crab Fishery Draft Management Plan., Fiona Crowe Nov 1994

The Warnbro Sound Crab Fishery Draft Management Plan., Fiona Crowe

Fisheries Management Papers

In recent years fishing effort for the blue summer/manna crabs (Portunus pelagicus) in Warnbro Sound has increased dramatically and concerns have been raised about the state of stocks of crabs in Warnbro Sound. As a result of the increased pressure being put on the limited resource, the relationship between professional and recreational user groups has become sensitive. It is therefore appropriate that measures ensure the responsible management of the Warnbro Sound Crab Fishery be introduced. Gear, bag limit and size restrictions on the taking of blue swimmer crabs by recreational fishermen already exists as part of the the overall recreational …

Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Commitee Chairman's Report, October 1994 - The Western Rock Lobster Fishery - Management Proposals For The 1994/95 And 1995/96 Seasons, Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee, Peter Rogers

Fisheries Management Papers

The failures of past restrictions on fishing effort to fully halt the decline of the breeding stock led to the formation of a sub-committee of the Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee. The prime objective of the sub-committee is to evaluate effective long term strategies for managing the fishery so that breeding stock is maintained at an adequate level despite the inevitable increases in catching efficiency. The purpose of this report is firstly to advise industry of the management proposals for the 1994/95 seasons and secondly to form a basis for industry consultation on management arrangements for the 1995/96 season.

Long Term Management Strategies For The Western Rock Lobster Industry (4 Volumes) - Economic Efficiency Of Alternative Input And Output Based Management Systems In The Western Rock Lobster Fishery (Volume 2), Bob Lindner

Fisheries Management Papers

Since 1965, the Western Rock Lobster Fishery has been managed by what is essentially a license limitation scheme invoiving restricted entry for boats, and strict controls on the aggregate number of pots which can be used by the commercial fishing sector. By most measures, management of this fishery has been highly successful. Biological over-exploitation of the fish stock has been prevented, at least until recently. Notwithstanding these achievements, there is widespread concern that the future profitability, and even the viability of the industry is under threat unless the current management practices are reformed. Because of the complexity and intrinsic uncertainty …

Fisheries Management Papers

This report has been written following approval by the Minister for Fisheries of a recommendation by the Rock LObster Industry Advisory Committee that a major evaluation of future management options for the western rock lobster fishery be undertaken. The report provides background information on the management strategies and principles of the fishery, its stock status, the use of input and output controls and the size of the fishing fleet. The report concludes with an examination of the effect of maintaining effort (input) controls and moving to a system of variable effort (TAE/ITEs) or moving to direct (output) controls on the …

Seasonal Composition Of Mesozooplankton In The Pagan River, A Nutrient Enriched Virginia Estuary, Lillian Norman Davis Oct 1994

Seasonal Composition Of Mesozooplankton In The Pagan River, A Nutrient Enriched Virginia Estuary, Lillian Norman Davis

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

A two year study of the mesozooplankton composition and seasonal distribution was conducted in the Pagan River, a nutrient rich tidal estuary and tributary to the lower James River. The mesozooplankton was dominated by calanoid copepods (80%), with the total zooplankton abundance peaks occurring during spring and fall. The total mean abundance, 3008/m', was somewhat lower than those found by other authors, however the mean abundance at one station approximated those means. Seventy-eight percent of the calanoid copepods were Acartia spp. that were primarily responsible for the fall increase in mesozooplankton abundance. The spring increase was primarily due to increases …
