Ecological Evaluation Of Proposed Dredged Material From Richmond Harbor, M. R. Pinza, J. A. Ward, H. L. Mayhew, J. Q. Word, Dev Niyogi, N. P. Kohn

During the summer of 1991, Battelle/Marine Sciences Laboratory (MSL) was contracted to conduct sampling and testing of sediments proposed for dredging of Richmond Harbor, California. The MSL collected sediment cores to a depth of [minus]40 ft MLLW ([minus]38 ft + 2 ft over depth) from 28 (12-in. core) and 30 (4-in. core) stations. The sediment cores were allocated to six composite samples referred to as sediment treatments, which were then subjected to physical, chemical, toxicological, and bioaccumulation testing. Physical and chemical parameters included grain size, total organic carbon (TOC), total volatile solids (TVS), oil and grease, total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), …

Iodine and Cl are enriched in soils in the vicinity of the Magmont and Buick lead mines near Bixby, southeastern Missouri. The enrichments, up to 5.6 ppm I and 305 ppm Cl, are against regional background of 1.26 ppm I and 41 ppm Cl. The area of highest I and Cl is thought to reflect a zone of base metal sulphide mineralization occurring about 400 m below the surface. Iodine and Cl are also enriched in soils immediately adjacent to a tailings pond, hence these elements would appear to be leached from this source. A zone of enhanced I values …

Differentiation Of Murine Erythroleukemic Cells During Exposure To Microwave Radiation, Roger F. Brown, S. V. Marshall Jan 1986

Differentiation Of Murine Erythroleukemic Cells During Exposure To Microwave Radiation, Roger F. Brown, S. V. Marshall

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cultures of murine erythroleukemic cells undergoing erythroid differentiation in response to induction by hexamethylene bisacetamide (HMBA) were exposed to 1180-MHz microwave (MW) radiation for 48 h while maintained at 37.4°C by variable-temperature air flow. Exposures at 1180 MHz were at 5.5, 11, and 22 mW/cm2 with a normalized specific absorption rate of 3.32 W/kg per mW/cm2. HMBA-induced control cells were incubated in a 37.4°C water bath. Mean cell doubling time was 16.5 h in both the irradiated cultures and the control cultures. About 65% of the cells of irradiated cultures and control cultures were benzidine-positive differentiated cells. Both the irradiated …

Cadmium In Forest Ecosystems Around Lead Smelters In Missouri, Nord L. Gale, Bobby G. Wixson Jan 1979

Cadmium In Forest Ecosystems Around Lead Smelters In Missouri, Nord L. Gale, Bobby G. Wixson

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

The development of Missouri's new lead belt within the past decade has provided an excellent opportunity to study the dissemination and effects of heavy metals in a deciduous forest ecosystem. Primary lead smelters, within the new lead belt have been identified as potential sources of cadmium as well as lead, zinc, and copper. Sintering and blast furnace operations tend to produce significant quantities of small particulates highly enriched in cadmium and other heavy metals. At one smelter, samples of stack particulate emissions indicate that as much as 0.21 lb of cadmium may be released to the atmosphere per hour. This …

A Study Of Poverty And Dependency In Phelps County For 1931, Arthur Royal Powell Jan 1932

A Study Of Poverty And Dependency In Phelps County For 1931, Arthur Royal Powell

Masters Theses

"The Ozark Region of Missouri is rapidly undergoing a definite social and economic change. thru markedly improved methods of communication and transportation the eighteenth century culture of this region is being metamorphosed into a twentieth century culture. Where the Ozarker of a generation ago was a strongly individualistic frontiersman in his outlook on life, he is now in the process of becoming a citizen of a larger and more complex society. The telephone, the radio, and the concrete highway, together with the cheap automobile, have made the customs and many of the folkways and mores of the Ozark people obsolete, …
