The Development Of The Gametophyte And The Apogamous Sporophyte Of Pteris Quadriaurita, Var. Argyraea, Moore, Anno Mary Sendik Jun 1930

The Development Of The Gametophyte And The Apogamous Sporophyte Of Pteris Quadriaurita, Var. Argyraea, Moore, Anno Mary Sendik

Bachelors’ Theses

In 1.848 Leszczyc-Suminski reported the appearance of sporophyte tissue element in a fern gametophyte. He observed tracheids near the apical notch of a prothallium of Pteris sulcata L. Wigand (1849) described an outgrowth from the apical notch of a fern prothallium. This was no doubt the development of an apogamous embryo. However, due to the uncertainty regarding the purity of some of his cultures, this development cannot be referred to any particular fern.

Bachelors’ Theses

It has been the object of the author to present in this thesis the chemical composition of the eggs of the duck and the goose, the chemical composition of the abdominal adipose connective tissue, the fat constants of the visceral fat of the goose, the egg-yolk fat of the goose and duck, and the subcutaneous fat of the goose.

The Spleen Considered With Special Reference To Its Physiology, Frank A. Dolce Jan 1930

The Spleen Considered With Special Reference To Its Physiology, Frank A. Dolce

Bachelors’ Theses

The aim of this essay on the structure and function of the spleen is to bring together in somewhat concise form all the available knowledge concerning this organ up to the present moment. However, time and the difficulty of obtaining valuable articles has limited this essay considerably. The first few pages while not giving a very detailed historical background may be considered quite adequate for the purpose intended. The evolutionary development of the spleen is here considered in broad outline. The microscopic anatomy of the spleen and its function in relation to the blood have been considered in greater detail …

Some Desmids Common To The Vicinity Of Milwaukee, Mary Charitas Kuehna Jun 1929

Some Desmids Common To The Vicinity Of Milwaukee, Mary Charitas Kuehna

Bachelors’ Theses

The subject matter of this paper is "the minutest of pet nurslings of Nature the Desmids. So insignificant, that it is safe to say more than nine-tenths of the human race hardly know of their existence, the Desmids, nevertheless, offer a wide and extensive field for the moat fascinating study and research. The purpose of this paper is first, to give a brief history of the Desmids, and then to determine which families, genera, and species of the Desmids are most common in this vicinity, and to study the conditions which are most favorable for their growth.

The Structure Of The Seed And The Development Of The Seedling Of Symplocarpus Foetidus (L.) Nutt,, John P. Ranzau Jun 1929

The Structure Of The Seed And The Development Of The Seedling Of Symplocarpus Foetidus (L.) Nutt,, John P. Ranzau

Bachelors’ Theses

The first mention of Symplocarpus foetidus (L.) Nutt. is made by John Josselyn in his ''New England rarities discovered in birds, beasts. fishes, serpents and plants of that country" published in 1872, where it is listed with plants such as are "proper to the country and have no name." The subject of his description can readily be discovered from a crudely engraved illustration. "The whole plant scents as strong as a fox" certainly leaves no doubt as to the identity of the plant. The plant has for a long time been of unusual interest to both layman and botanist because …

The Anatomy Of The Honeybee, Carol M. Steib Jun 1928

The Anatomy Of The Honeybee, Carol M. Steib

Bachelors’ Theses

The honeybee has lived In a society under such complex laws and has executed such varied and difficult labors that it has attracted the attention of men and women from the very earliest of times. Aristotle, Cato, Varro, Pliny, Columella, Pollodius, all studied the bee; as also did Arlstomachus (who, if we are to believe Cicero, watched them for forty-eight years) and Phylisius whose writings have been lost.

Branched Cells Of Pteris Cretica L., Var. "Albo-Lineata, Hort And Pellaea Viridis (Forksk) Prantl", Mary Elizabeth Trechter Jun 1928

Branched Cells Of Pteris Cretica L., Var. "Albo-Lineata, Hort And Pellaea Viridis (Forksk) Prantl", Mary Elizabeth Trechter

Bachelors’ Theses

The fern gametophyte offers a large field for experimental work, not only in the reproductive processes but in the development of prothallia from the germination of the spore. The ordinary fern spore germinates on soil or in water. Prothallia, which have formed branched cells, have been found by a number of workers, and attempts have been made by some to explain the cause of the branching.

The Development Of The Gametophyte And The Apogamous Embryo Of Pellaea Viridis (Forksk) Prantl, Eugene Stowell Mcdonough Jun 1928

The Development Of The Gametophyte And The Apogamous Embryo Of Pellaea Viridis (Forksk) Prantl, Eugene Stowell Mcdonough

Bachelors’ Theses

A sporophyte tissue element in the cells of a fern gametophyte was first reported by Leszcyc-Suminski (1848) who found tracheids near the apical notch of the prothallium of Pteris sulcata L.

Favorable Cultural Conditions For Tuber Development In Nephrolepis Cordifolia (L.) Presl. (Nephrolepis Tuberosa (Bory.)Willd.), Hazel Mae Henderson Jun 1928

Favorable Cultural Conditions For Tuber Development In Nephrolepis Cordifolia (L.) Presl. (Nephrolepis Tuberosa (Bory.)Willd.), Hazel Mae Henderson

Bachelors’ Theses

Recently there has been brought to the attention of writers a number of plants that produce water-storing organs commonly known as tubers. Luerssen, (Campbell, 1905) refers to special reproductive bodies or tubers in Marsilia hirsuta. These tubers are thought to survive long periods of drought, and to germinate under favorable conditions. Nephrolepis cordifolia (L.) Presl., one of the Boston ferns, which produces tubers in large numbers has interested a number of investigators.

The Anatomy Of The Timber Rattlesnake, Ruth H. Heinemann May 1928

The Anatomy Of The Timber Rattlesnake, Ruth H. Heinemann

Bachelors’ Theses

Snakes are the most highly specialized of all reptiles. The absence of limbs, in itself, is a great specialization. They possess a great modification of the jaws which enables them to engulf large prey entire. Probably the most out standing specialization is the remarkable modification of dentition in the venomous snakes. The so-called fangs are nothing more than teeth modified to a great degree.

The Development Of The Gametophyte And Apogamous Sporophyte In Cheilanthes Feei, Moore, Florence Madeline Steil Jun 1927

The Development Of The Gametophyte And Apogamous Sporophyte In Cheilanthes Feei, Moore, Florence Madeline Steil

Bachelors’ Theses

Since Leszeye-Suminski's (1848) discovery of tracheids near the apical notch of the prothallium of Pteris sulcata, problems pertaining to apogamy or related phenomena have offered a wide field for botanists. Nearly all workers interested in the study of apogamous ferns, have contributed something of physiological or cytological interest

Some Methods Of Vegetative Reproduction In Nephrolepis Cordifolia, Presl, Mildred Frances Hubel Jun 1927

Some Methods Of Vegetative Reproduction In Nephrolepis Cordifolia, Presl, Mildred Frances Hubel

Bachelors’ Theses

Nephrolepis cordifolia, Presl is reproduced by means of spores, rhizomes, runners, and tubers. Little work has been done, however, on the tubers. In fact, the tubers are generally thought to be for storage only and consequently of little importance. At the Royal Palm Nurseries, Oneca, Florica where the plants for this study were obtained, the tubers were removed and thrown away. When a request was made for a large plant with the tubers, they replied: "We cannot supply the large cordifolia with the bulbs, as they were pruned off all our plants. They do not present a very attractive appearance …

Scientific Discoveries Concerned With Pathogenic Micro-Organisms, Matilda Mary Steinbrecher Sep 1924

Scientific Discoveries Concerned With Pathogenic Micro-Organisms, Matilda Mary Steinbrecher

Bachelors’ Theses

Stand where you choose some calm night and look up into the great dome of the sky. Realize that those countless stars, once believed to regulate our destinies, have been proven by science to be other worlds more or less like ours. Let your thoughts wander on to objects near at hand. You see the rocks and soil and plants as did mankind for ages back; but where they not so long back saw nought else, you see rocks breaking into fertile soil and realize that minute living beings are responsible. You have come to understand that all the nitrogen …

The Theory Of Spontaneous Generation, Arthur Thomas Kuesel Jun 1924

The Theory Of Spontaneous Generation, Arthur Thomas Kuesel

Bachelors’ Theses

The theories concerning the origin of life on this planet have been many and varied all down the ages. In the prescientific ages, if we may be allowed to designate those years as such, before science was as exacting and searching sit is now, practically all the theories advanced by the philosophers at the time have since been proven to be fallacies and all of them save one, the Theory of Spontaneous Generation have been discarded into the limbo of mistaken notions.

The Development Of The Seedling And The Tissues Of Pinus Monophylla, Irene Mary Keeley Jun 1924

The Development Of The Seedling And The Tissues Of Pinus Monophylla, Irene Mary Keeley

Bachelors’ Theses

Considering plants as a whole, there are four principal divisions, the Tallophytes, the Bryophytes, the Pteridophytes and the Spermatophytes. The latter, or highest division of the plant kingdom, comprises two classes; the Angiosperms and the Cymnosperms, or seed-bearing plants. The Gymnosperms, of which there are four hundred living species, are the most widely distributed of any plants throughout the United States and tropical countries. We need not limit our knowledge to recent years for, Geologists tell us of their early discoveries of fossil representatives. This class is subdivided into different groups, the Coniferales being the most important and abundant. The …

Extreme Evolution Is Absurd And Moderate Evolution Is Not Yet Established, Marie Georgiana Blommer Apr 1924

Extreme Evolution Is Absurd And Moderate Evolution Is Not Yet Established, Marie Georgiana Blommer

Bachelors’ Theses

In the world of literature and science many records containing startling theories are to be found. Among these is the doctrine of Evolution. Many assure us that Science compels us to believe in Evolution. An explanation of the terms must be clearly understood to avoid a fallacious use of terms. Professor Huxley, who follows Hume, declares that Science is "nothing but trained and organized commonsense." The term is applied to physical science or "that whose province is the observation of phenomena and inferences directly deducible from them." The term "Evolution" is often differently understood. In its literal sense it is …

A Study Of The Tissues Of Leaves Of Certain Angiosperms, Amybelle Halbert Brady Jun 1923

A Study Of The Tissues Of Leaves Of Certain Angiosperms, Amybelle Halbert Brady

Bachelors’ Theses

The leaves used for the study of the tissues were those of the Oleander, Ficus, Ivy, Cyperus and the Aristolochia. Portions of the leaves used were cut into rectangular pieces, about one centimeter long and one half centimeter wide, each piece including a portion of a large vein and its subsidiary veinlets. The material was placed into chrome acetic acid solution. After twenty four hours it was a shed in running water for twelve hours and then dehydrated by means of alcohol, and was then imbedded in paraffin. The sections used for the study were cut from 12 to 15 …
