All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

The important questions for instructors to address concern what skills the student is to learn and how the student is to be motivated to acquire those skills. Questions about simulations, graphics tools, and the like are unimportant until the first two questions have been answered adequately. We discuss the role of explanation by students and describe a mechanism for motivating students to learn.

A Case Study Of Four Fifth Grade Teachers And Their Perceptions Of How And Why They Teach Science, Ana K. Houseal

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of four 5th grade teachers and their perceptions of the influences on how and why they taught science in their classrooms. The four participating teachers who were from three school districts in Iowa were observed teaching science lessons and interviewed following the observations. The results of the study showed that the data obtained during the observations and interviews focused on three major themes. The first theme centered on the teachers' perceptions of changes in teaching elementary science. These included a move away from text-based learning with a subsequent move …

Comparison Of The Effects Of Aerobic Dance To Water Aerobic Training On Maximal Oxygen Consumption, Terri L. Bedford, Tamara A. Dusterwinkle, Darcy J. Hoppman

Masters Theses

Water aerobics is one mode of exercise that is gaining popularity. Water aerobics allows adults who participate in an exercise program to improve their cardiorespiratory fitness. The purpose of this study was to determine if water aerobic training is as effective as land dance aerobic training in improving cardiorespiratory fitness in sedentary healthy adults. Eighteen subjects participated in this study; nine in dance aerobics and nine in water aerobics. Before and after eight weeks of training, subjects performed a graded maximal exercise test on a Schwinn Air-Dyne while maximal oxygen uptake was measured via a Beckman Metabolic Cart. ANCOVA was …

Geological Field Guide To The Cedar Point Biological Station, Keith County, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr., Roger K. Pabian

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

This field guide was produced by staff members of the Conservation and Survey Division of the University of Nebraska originally in 1979 at the request of Dr. Brent Nickol, former Director of the Cedar Point Biological Station. It is an introduction to the geologic history and paleoecology of the Cedar Point area intended for students, staff, and other persons using the camp. This revision has been made some 15 years after the first version to reflect changes in ideas resulting from new data collected during that time.

Users of this guide should take care when studying the rock exposures described …

Impact Of Elementary Teachers’ Science Backgrounds On The Teaching Of Science In Iowa Elementary Classrooms, Nancy Lynn Heiter

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to investigate the high school and college science background of elementary teachers in Iowa and to relate this background to the amount of time these teachers spend teaching about science. The population from which this sample was drawn consisted of elementary school teachers in Iowa. A stratified random sample of schools based on school district size was used. Surveys were mailed to principals, who were asked to distribute the surveys to teachers. From the population surveyed, 475 teachers participated in the study. The chi square analysis was used to show relationships between data collected. …

A Study Of Science Teacher Perceptions And The Implementation Of Science-Technology-Society Education In Iowa Senior High Schools, David L. Johnson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which Science-Technology Society (STS) education has been implemented into the science curriculum and if teachers perceptions and personal assessment of STS education in Iowa senior high schools vary with the teacher's STS background or educational degree. Consisting of 190 senior high school science teachers (grades 9-12) in forty-nine schools distributed throughout the state of Iowa, the sample was obtained by a systematic, stratified sampling of school districts by enrollment size and Area Education Agency districts. Teachers were asked to complete questionnaires designed to collect data concerning: STS background, level …
