The National Subterranean Clover Improvement Programme (NSCIP) aims to develop, by breeding and selection, better adapted and more productive low—oestrogen cultivars of subterranean clover for a range of environments in southern Australia. The programme is a collaborative one with the University of Western Australia and consists of two phases: (i) early generation selection, which involves selecting varieties satisfying primary selection criteria; and (ii) field evaluation of advanced lines, which is conducted by the Departments of Agriculture in each State and co—ordinated by the Plant Breeder.

Persistence of AMV in annual medic swards.

In 1990, the fourth year of this trial, although the medic plants were numerous the burr medic swards at Avondale grew poorly and weeds were widespread in the plots, especially long storkbill, flatweed and grasses. Poor growth was due to nodulation failure caused by low soil pH (5.3 in water). Hardly any medic plants were left in the Zodiac medic plot at Avondale while a few remained at Mt. Barker.

The 590 Ha Winchester sub-catchment has no apparent external drainage. Groundwater levels are rising causing site specific problems. Wind erosion has severely affected some areas.The objective of this report is to provide a sub-catchment management plan that is based on sustainable agricultural systems and a hydrological equilibrium. The recommendations aim to meet this objective in the long term. Recommendations to achieve short term results are considered separately. These measures have relatively high installation and maintenance costs. They should be considered as interim management methods until the recommendations for long-term control become effective (perhaps 3 - 5 years after implementation).

The first priority is for the control and better use of water on the recharge areas. The wheat/wheat/lupin rotation at present offers the best economic option. Lupins are well suited to the areas of lighter land. If lupins are planted on waterlogged soils or otherwise unsuitable soils, problems will arise and perhaps prejudice their use on the widespread suitable areas. This project began with a requirement to produce a poster display for the Soil Conservation Districts Regional Workshops, in July 1988. A multi-dimensional display was produced at each of three workshops, accompanied by extensive publicity cover. As a result of the success of the displays, it was decided to maximise the exposure possible and tackle the Agricultural Show circuit. The Soil Show then travelled 7900 km, taking in 12 venues involving 16 days of public exposure in 10 weeks. It attracted up to 340 people per hour and won a number of awards. The Moora advisory district consists of seven shires which cover 2,811,400 hectares. Mixed cereal sheep production is the main system in the medium and low rainfall areas with cereals increasing in importance as annual rainfall diminishes.

Ten pitlines were placed in open low woodlands near Moates Lake and in upland and coastal heathlands near Mount Gardner on Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve during February 1980 and February 1981. The trapping program established that Common Dunnarts (Smitnthopsts murina) and Honey Possums (Tarstpes spencerae) were widespread in the reserve, and added three lizards and one frog to the list of vertebrates known to occur on the reserve.

Twenty mammals (15 native and 5 feral), four snakes, fifteen lizards, one tortoise and six frogs are now known on Iwo Peoples Bay Nature Reserve. They constitute a representative sample of …

During 1972 and 1973 plants and vertebrate animals were collected and recorded from a proposed 22 000 ha nature reserve centred on a chain of salt lakes in south-western Western Australia (33° 10' S - 33° 35' 8 and 118° 19' B - 118° 29' E).

The dominant plant species were collected, the structural formations desert bed and a vegetation map produced. Seven species of native terrestrial mammal and three species of bat were recorded.

THIS species is a mallee with an average stature of 5-15 feet, with several erect twiggy branches, the bark smooth except at the very base where unshed patches of a dark greyish-brown adhere to the stems, otherwise it sheds in small plates, leaving a smooth grey-brown bark.
