Wolbachia is an intracellular bacterium that is known for inducing cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI) in its Drosophila melanogaster hosts. CI is characterized by embryonic death when males that express cifA and cifB genes mate with unaffected females (Shropshire, Rosenberg, and Bordenstein 2020). PIWI proteins play important roles such as germline determination, spermiogenesis, and transposon silencing (Thomson and Lin 2009). Previous studies have shown that Piwi expression decreases in a developmental window called the “Piwiless pocket” or Pilp. When Aub is depleted in the Pilp, then Piwi expression increases (Théron et al. 2018). We will determine if Piwi and Aub FANA ASO …

Mycoplasma pneumoniae (Mp) is an atypical bacterium that is linked to various respiratory diseases such as walking pneumonia and asthma. Upon infection, Mp produces a 591-aa virulence factor known as Community Acquired Respiratory Distress Syndrome Toxin (CARDS TX). The crystal structure of this 591-aa cytotoxin reveals a triangular molecule comprised of an N-terminal ADP-ribosylating domain and a Cterminal tandem β-trefoil domain that is responsible for vacuolation of the host’s cells. Based on structural and sequence homology to other ADP ribosylating toxins, the NAD+ binding site has been predicted, yet none of the published structures of the CARDS toxin contain NAD+. …

The Open Neuroscience Initiative is a free-to-use textbook

This project began as a means to overcoming the financial burden that face undergraduate neuroscience students when buying textbooks. By compiling and writing a completely free-to-access textbook that covers the foundations of a typical college introduction to neuroscience course, students would have one less obstacle to overcome in their educational career, allowing them to focus their valuable time and attention on learning rather than finances. To make this project a reality, I began with a humble tweet in May 2019 that managed to gain a tiny bit of traction among the neuroscience …
