Radiation-Induced Increases In Pkc Modulate Integrin Expression And Contribute To Fibrotic Changes, Pinal Rushikesh Pandya May 2007

Radiation-Induced Increases In Pkc Modulate Integrin Expression And Contribute To Fibrotic Changes, Pinal Rushikesh Pandya

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The sequences of events in fibrosis are similar to those in wound healing; however, the normal termination and resolution stages do not take place. The initial cellular response following ionizing radiation involves accumulation of the ECM (extracellular matrix) including collagen, fibronectin and the interaction of many growth factors (cytokines) with their receptors. There are a number of unanswered questions regarding many aspects of radiation-induced fibrosis, including the initial triggers and physical changes that initiate the process. We have confirmed that elevated pKC and other cellular changes following radiation are similar to those found at sites of inflammation. This information leads …

Membrane Organization And Multimeric Interactions Of The Aer Receptor In E. Coli, Divya Dashrathkumar Amin Jun 2006

Membrane Organization And Multimeric Interactions Of The Aer Receptor In E. Coli, Divya Dashrathkumar Amin

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Escherichia coli swims toward niches ideal for generating maximum energy by monitoring the environment with the aerotaxis sensor, Aer. This receptor has an N-terminal PAS domain, which is a sensor module present in a variety of proteins from all kingdoms of life (including humans). To date, the mechanism of signaling from a PAS sensor domain to a single signaling receiver domain has not been resolved. In Aer, the PAS sensor is separated from the signaling region by a membrane anchor. Most "transmembrane prediction" programs forecast a single membrane span for this membrane anchor, but such a topology is inconsistent our …

Enterotoxin B Subunit Lectins As Adjuvants For Improvement Of Mucosal Vaccine, Nak-Won Choi Dec 2004

Enterotoxin B Subunit Lectins As Adjuvants For Improvement Of Mucosal Vaccine, Nak-Won Choi

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In comparison with whole organism vaccines, subunit vaccines may be safer for immunization but may lack sufficient immunogenicity to provide complete immunity to the pathogen. To resolve this problem, bacterial and plant enterotoxin B subunit adjuvants containing a variety of receptor-binding properties were used to enhance the immunogenicity of rotavirus subunit vaccines. Enterotoxin B subunit adjuvants were employed to enhance protection against virus infection. Pentameric cholera toxin B subunit (CTB), shiga toxin-1 B subunit (STB) and monomeric ricin toxin B subunit (RTB) molecules were genetically linked to a 90 amino acid peptide from the simian rotavirus (SA11) nonstructural protein NSP4 …

Aerotaxis In Halobacterium Halobium, Jemima Clara Lindbeck Jun 1991

Aerotaxis In Halobacterium Halobium, Jemima Clara Lindbeck

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Aerotaxis, previously studied in eubacteria was investigated in the archaebacterium Halobacterium halobium. A quantitative temporal assay for aerotaxis of H. halobium was developed using computer assisted motion analysis. Aerotaxis was most pronounced in early log phase cultures. Peak aerotaxis was found to coincide with peak respiration consistent with a model in which respiration is required for aerotaxis. In a spatial assay a mutant strain lacking the proton motive force (pmf)-generating pigments, bacteriorhodopsin (bR) and halorhodopsin (hR), exhibited enhanced aerotaxis bands relative to the bR+hR+ parent. The enhanced aerotaxis in the mutant cells was not due solely to …

Maternal Immunomodulation Of Neonatal Alloantigen Response, Leh Chang Jun 1990

Maternal Immunomodulation Of Neonatal Alloantigen Response, Leh Chang

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Remarkable success has been achieved in the transplantation of allogeneic cardiac grafts into newborn infants at Loma Linda University Medical Center. The superior graft survival rate documented in these patients has not correlated with the degree of immunosuppression rendered, or the selection of genetically matched donors. However, the clinical success has correlated with the age of the recipient at the time of receiving a transplant. Patients receiving an allograft within the first few weeks of life are unique in that they seem to accept the alloantigens of their cardiac graft while responding aggressively to antigens in their environment. These observations …

Isolation And Characterization Of A Novel Motility Mutant In Salmonella Typhimurium, David Matthew Chacko Sep 1985

Isolation And Characterization Of A Novel Motility Mutant In Salmonella Typhimurium, David Matthew Chacko

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A new mutant, BT40, isolated from mutagenized cultures of S. typhimurium was deficient in chemotaxis (Che- phenotype) in tryptone semisoft agar, but had random motility with a tumbling frequency (37%) similar to that of the parental strain, ST23 (39%). In spatial assays accumulation of BT40 cells in capillary tubes containing attractants was decreased by 33%-59% compared to ST23, but BT40 had a normal response to attractants in temporal assays. The methylation level of the chemotactic proteins was decreased in BT40. At room temperature, the mean swimming speed was 11 μm/s for BT40 and 20 μm/s for ST23; more BT40 …

Non-Parental-Type Recombinants In Crosses Between Different Restriction-Modification Systems In Salmonella, Mary Ball May 1978

Non-Parental-Type Recombinants In Crosses Between Different Restriction-Modification Systems In Salmonella, Mary Ball

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Many new restriction-modification (R-M) system which are closely linked to serB and allelic to the hsdSB system of S. typimurium occur in different Salmonella serotypes. In PI transduction studies with these systems, recombinants were isolated which fell into one of three classes with reference to their specific restriction phenotype. Recombinants that restricted like the donor, recombinants that restricted like the recipient and recombinants that had lost the ability to restrict. This latter group having lost the recipient SB restriction without gaining the specific donor restriction and here called "zero recombinants,” were of special interest and were investigated.

Zero recombinants …

Role Of Membrane-Associated Components Of Mycoplasma Arthritidis On The Biosynthesis Of Humoral Antibodies And Arthritogenic Properties In Experimental Animals, Lois M. Bergquist Jun 1973

Role Of Membrane-Associated Components Of Mycoplasma Arthritidis On The Biosynthesis Of Humoral Antibodies And Arthritogenic Properties In Experimental Animals, Lois M. Bergquist

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The virulence of animal-passaged Mycoplasma arthritidis (158) was demonstrated to be enhanced in rats by growth in oleic acid-enriched broth. The virulence of a laboratory-maintained culture of the same strain was unaffected by similar growth conditions. No differences either in the immune response as measured by complement-fixing (CF) antibodies or in the histogenesis of the disease were detected when rats were injected with animal-passaged M. arthritidis grown either in the presence or in the absence of oleic acid. All tests for metabolism-inhibiting (MI) antibodies in the rat were negative.

A Mycoplasma-associated immunosuppression of the primary and of the secondary hemagglutinin …

The Nature Of Salmonella Phage P3 Modification And Restriction By Growth In Escherichia Coli, Clark A. Pearson Jan 1971

The Nature Of Salmonella Phage P3 Modification And Restriction By Growth In Escherichia Coli, Clark A. Pearson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The Salmonella potsdam group B bacteriophage P3, which grows in the rough variant strain of S. potsdam (SP2-R) and E. coli KCS11, KW117, and C+/L with similar efficiencies, was restricted by SP2-R after a passage though E. coli. The entrance of restricted E. coli-grown phage DNA into nonpermissive SP2-R cells was confirmed by the finding that after adsorption of restricted 32P-labeled P3-C1·C+/L to SP2-R and removal of the adsorbed phage heads from cells, 80.3% of the labeled DNA activity sedimented with the cells. Thus restricted P3 DNA …

A Comparative Study Of The Growth Of Polyoma Virus In Two Secondary Cell Lines: Mouse Lymphoma And Normal Mouse Fibroblasts, Rheeta M. Stecker Jun 1961

A Comparative Study Of The Growth Of Polyoma Virus In Two Secondary Cell Lines: Mouse Lymphoma And Normal Mouse Fibroblasts, Rheeta M. Stecker

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In comparing the growth of polyoma virus in secondary cell cultures of a mouse lymphoma (P388D1, a known polyoma-supporting strain) and normal mouse fibroblasts (Earle’s L cells), the following observations have been made.

The L cell is capable of supporting the growth of the polyoma virus with reproduction and release of infectious particles. Viruses appear in the fluid from time to time over a period of several weeks. This probably represents a carrier state of the virus in L cells. Many of the L cells in infected cultures are not killed by the virus infection.

Virus particles released …
