Various opossum species are resistant to snake venoms due to the presence of antihemorrhagic and antimyotoxic acidic serum glycoproteins that inhibit several toxic venom components. According to the World Health Organization, tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death by infectious disease. Tuberculosis is caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis and occurs globally. Additionally, in 2017, TB was reported in all 50 states. Due to the scope of TB, strict observation of patients is required to ensure adherence to the current drug regimen. However, most reported cases are in developing countries where proper care is difficult. In support of ongoing anti-microbial & anti-tumor research, analogs of a GVSU lead compound, a derivative of the known telomerase inhibitor BIBR1532, were synthesized. These compounds were submitted for biological analysis to determine pharmacological activity toward the discovery of either an antibiotic that can resist bacterial enzymatic degradation or a chemotherapeutic molecule that can destroy tumor cells without increasing toxicity. The anti-microbial interest in these compounds was based on the fact that they are non-penicillin based antibiotics and display a broad range of efficacy against targeted bacteria, including C. diff & MRSA, with minimal toxicity. The objective of this research project was to synthesize multiple derivatives of anthranilic acid. These derivatives will then be tested for antibiotic activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli (E. coli). As bacteria become more resistant to penicillin-based antibiotics, the exploration of anthranilic acid-based antibiotics could serve an important role for future medical use. This research project included data collection via 1H-NMR, 12C-NMR, TLC, MP, and IR to determine purity for biological testing.

Fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) is an analytical tool used to probe neurochemical processes in real-time. A major drawback for specialized applications of FSCV is that instrumentation must be constructed or modified in-house by those with expertise in electronics. One such specialized application is the newly developed fast-scan controlled-adsorption voltammetry (FSCAV) that measures basal (tonic) in vivo dopamine and serotonin concentrations. FSCAV requires additional software and equipment (an operational amplifier coupled to a transistor-transistor logic) allowing the system to switch between applying a FSCV waveform and a constant potential to the working electrode. Fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) is an electrochemical technique that utilizes the oxidation and/or reduction of an analyte of interest to infer rapid changes in concentrations. In order to calibrate the resulting oxidative or reductive current, known concentrations of an analyte must be introduced under controlled settings. Here, I describe a simple and cost-effective method, using a Petri dish and pipettes, for the calibration of carbon fiber microelectrodes (CFMs) using FSCV.

Diaphanous-related formins (DRFs) are a conserved family of proteins that are involved in the regulation of cellular shape, motility, and cell division by regulating the structure of the cellular “skeleton” (cytoskeleton); any disruption of this regulation can result in cell death. Normally, the DRFs are kept in an inactive state by the intramolecular binding of two regions of the protein: the Diaphanous Autoregulatory Domain (DAD) and Diaphanous Inhibitory Domain (DID).
