Revision Of The Taxonomic Status Of Rhodanthidium Sticticum Ordonezi (Dusmet, 1915), An Anthidiine Bee Endemic To Morocco (Apoidea: Anthidiini), Max Kasparek, Patrick Lhomme

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Rhodanthidium ordonezi (Dusmet, 1815) is recognized here as a valid species endemic to central and southern Morocco. It has previously been regarded as a subspecies of R. sticticum (Fabricius). The two taxa are in allopatry throughout most of their respective ranges, but probably cooccur in the Middle Atlas Mountains. They are clearly distinguished by their coloration and some aspects of their color patterns. Structural differences are minor, but a multivariate discriminant function analysis of 11 morphometric traits has showed that these are sufficient to assign 82.7% of all specimens correctly. First Record Of The Genus Spilomyia (Diptera, Syrphidae) From The Oriental Region, Aijaz Ahmad Wachkoo, Jeroen Van Steenis, Zubair Ahmad Rather, Jayita Sengupta, Dhriti Banerjee

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Spilomyia manicata (Rondani, 1865) is reported as a new genus and species record from India and the Oriental region. A brief diagnosis, images, and comparison with allied species are provided to scientifically validate this new faunal record from the Indian subcontinent and to facilitate its prompt identification. The species shows rare distribution across its range, and various factors pose a threat to the existence of this large pollinator species. Therefore, the documentation of this species assumes significance for devising conservation strategies and sustainable management.

The bat fauna of the Caribbean island of Sint Eustatius consists of five documented species—Monophyllus plethodon, Brachyphylla cavernarum, Artibeus jamaicensis, Ardops nichollsi, and Molossus molossus—and one provisional species—Tadarida brasiliensis. The Insular Single-leaf Bat, M. plethodon, is reported in the scientific literature for the first time from Sint Eustatius based on material presented herein. The bat fauna of the island is considered to be unbalanced because only three species, which are the environmental generalists, are abundant, whereas the more specialized species are rare or absent from the fauna. I divided my thesis into two major studies focusing on the Great Basin Spadefoot Toad, Spea intermontana, at the Beverley Dunes (Beverley, WA). The first study explored the effects of temperature and water level on the rate of metamorphosis. We gathered data on rates of development, survival, body mass, snout-vent length, and hind leg length of metamorphs under 4 treatments: 20C x High Water, 30C x High Water, 20C x Water Loss, and 30C x Water Loss. Here we report a new winter crane fly (Trichoceridae) species, belonging to the subgenus Metatrichocera Dahl, 1966 from Bulgaria. Further records of Metatrichocera Dahl from Bulgaria, Romania, and Serbia are presented with illustrations and taxonomic remarks. The records of Trichocera (Metatrichocera) forcipula Nielsen, 1920 and Trichocera (Metatrichocera) ticina Stary & Podenas, 1995 represent the first records of Trichoceridae from Serbia.

Atlas projects and phylogeographic studies provide detailed information of great value on key species; distribution maps of the species are the primary input for establishing hotspots, conservation, and management plans. Krüper's Nuthatch (Sitta krueperi) is endemic to Anatolia, Lesvos Island, and the Caucasus region. We surveyed more than 1400 point counts in Turkey and Greece, covering most of its global distribution in its potential habitat, coniferous forestland, during the breeding season. Alabama is home to the southernmost populations of Rhinichthys obtusus, the Western Blacknose Dace. Within Alabama, R. obtusus is found in the Tennessee, Coosa, and Black Warrior River basins, but its presence in the Black Warrior River drainage has been limited. Until now, R. obtusus in the Black Warrior drainage has only been reported as collections of 1 to 4 specimens at a time in the Sipsey Fork drainage. Herein, we report two novel occurrences of R. obtusus in the headwaters of the Brushy Creek system in the Black Warrior River drainage including a singleton and a large population. …

Two genera, Coelopencyrtus Timberlake, 1919 and Mayrencyrtus Hincks, 1944, are reported here for the first time from Transcaucasia. Fourteen new records of encyrtid species from Georgia are reported. Except for 4 species (Bothriothorax aralius (Walker, 1837); B. clavicornis (Dalman, 1820); B. trichops Thomson, 1876; and Cheiloneurus submuticus Thomson, 1876), all species are recorded for the first time from Transcaucasia.

Declining Populations Of Chukar Partridge (Alectoris Chukar) In Bulgaria, Gradimir Gruychev

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Between 2007 and 2011, the distribution and breeding density of Chukar Partridges in Bulgaria were examined. Seventy-six UTM squares of the study area were deemed as including suitable habitat for the Chukar. In 14 of them varying degrees of breeding evidence of the Chukar Partridge were observed. Confirmed breeding was found in only 6 habitats, with breeding densities of 2 to 4 pairs/100 ha. In applying the IUCN criteria to data from this study, the Chukar Partridge falls within the category of critically endangered species in Bulgaria.

Bombina variegata (L., 1758) is recorded in Turkey for the first time. With the record of the present study, the known easternmost distribution area of the species has been extended from Greece to Turkey. The specimens were collected from Kurtkaya-Enez (Edirne). The morphometric characters and color-pattern features of the specimens were compared with data given in the earlier literature. We observed that the specimens of the Kurtkaya population were similar to the B. v. scabra specimens reported in the literature.

The plankton and semiplankton samples examined from a subtropical wetland of Shillong, Meghalaya, Northeast India (NEI), revealed seven new records of rotifers belonging to six genera and six families. These include five species new to the Indian Rotifera and two species new to the rotifer fauna of NEI, thus meriting interest in terms of biodiversity and distribution. All the species are illustrated to warrant validation. During fieldwork in western Anatolia 4 specimens (1 adult male, 2 subadult males, and 1 subadult female) of Phoenicolacerta laevis from Dalaman, Muğla Province, were collected in November 2014. The results including meristic pholidolial characteristics, metric measurements, and color-pattern features of specimens are compared with the data given in the previous literature. The occurrence of P. Laevis in southern and western Anatolia is discussed.

There are twelve Microtus species in Turkey and two of them are endemic to the steppic central Anatolian plateau. In this study, previously collected specimens that were recorded as Microtus irani from southeastern Turkey were reevaluated by karyologically comparing different species distributed throughout southeastern Turkey. The taxonomic status of this species was raised to a new species, Microtus elbeyli sp. Nov., which has dark ochreous dorsal color, agrestis morphotype in M2, and 2n = 46, NF = 50, Nfa = 46 karyotype. During the last decade I collected extensive new information about the distribution of the Grey hamster (Cricetulus migratorius) in Bulgaria, mainly through the study of pellets of birds of prey and owls. New data about the dental morphology and morphometrics, distribution, and current status of the Grey hamster in Bulgaria are presented. The Grey hamster has been found in the diet of the Barn owl (Tyto alba), Little owl (Athene noctua), and Eastern imperial eagle (Aquila heliaca). An inventory of bat species in the Milesevka river gorge (southwestern Serbia) was conducted in July 2013. There were six bat species recorded in the cave at the Cetanica plateau using a mist-netting technique. In this paper we report the first finding of Plecotus macrobullaris in Serbia, contributing to the knowledge of its distribution area. The bat fauna of Serbia now contains 30 species.

The encyrtid species Copidosoma boucheanum Ratzeburg (Hym.: Chalcidoidea, Encyrtidae) was identified and is reported for the first time from Iran. These specimens were reared from leafroller larvae (Lep.: Tortricidae) on Populus sp. as a polyembryonic endoparasitoid. Copidosoma species of Iran are listed with their distribution.

In this study, we report 2 new close localities for Eumeces schneideri from Aydın, western Anatolia, Turkey. The specimens were examined morphologically and compared with the relevant literature. These new localities have filled in the gap in the species' distribution range in western Anatolia, Turkey. According to the morphological results, the female specimens resembled E. S. Barani in terms of the scales along the dorsal midline. However, the color-pattern characteristics of the specimens were found to be somewhere between E. S. Barani and E. S. Princeps; thus, the specimens were accepted as E. S. Cf. Barani.

A record of the Italian wall lizard, Podarcis siculus (Rafinesque-Schmaltz, 1810), from Atakum (Samsun, Central Black Sea Region) is provided in this study. In addition, 5 specimens (3 males and 2 females) from Atakum (Samsun) and 14 specimens (7 males and 7 females) from Gelibolu (Çanakkale, Thrace), with records provided recently, were evaluated in terms of measurements, pholidosis, and color and pattern. With the record from Samsun, the Italian wall lizard's distributional range has been extended about 360 km eastwards. Extensive surveys were carried out between 1992 and 2011 to determine the occurrence and distribution of the neuropteran superfamilies of Mantispoidea, Osmyloidea, and Myrmeleontoidea in Bursa, northwestern Turkey. A total of 345 specimens from 20 species belonging to 7 families were collected at 48 localities using a sweep net. The families of Berothidae, Dilaridae, Mantispidae, Osmylidae, Ascalaphidae, Myrmeleontidae, and Nemopteridae were represented by 1, 1, 3, 1, 3, 10, and 1 species, respectively. This work is a contribution to the knowledge of the Ephemeroptera (Insecta) fauna of the central Balkan Peninsula. A total of 85 mayfly species (31 genera and 12 families) were reported. The largest number of mayfly species was recorded within the Ju?na and Zapadna Morava river basins, while the lowest taxa richness was observed within the Sava basin. A survey on the fauna of the Cryptinae of Isfahan Province was carried out in the summer of 2012. Specimens were collected using Malaise traps and sweeping nets. Nine species belonging to 9 genera of Cryptinae occurring in Isfahan Province were collected and identified. Among them, 7 species have been recorded from Iran previously. One specimen of Chalcides ocellatus was found in the village of Görümlü, Silopi, Şırnak, southeastern Anatolia. It was examined in terms of morphometric, pholidotic, and coloration pattern characteristics. The fauna of the subfamily Scymninae (Coccinellidae: Coleoptera) of Gilgit-Baltistan was explored and studied. This study confirmed the occurrence of 4 species in 2 genera of Scymninae. These include 2 species in genus Scymnus (S. Posticalis Sicard, 1913 and S. Nubilus Mulstant, 1850), and 2 species in genus Stethorus (Stethorus gilvifrons (Mulstant, 1850) and S. Pauperculus (Weise, 1895)). Among these 4 species, S. Posticalis Sicard is reported here as a new record from the study area. We present recent findings of Chloropidae in Iran and a first list of the Iranian species of this family. It includes 20 genera and 50 species (39 identified to species level), recorded up until 2014. Some European distribution records not included in Fauna Europaea are added. The courtship behavior of Polyodaspis sulcicollis is described for the first time.

A phylogeny of the species-rich clade of the Neotropical frog genus Leptodactylus sensu stricto is presented on the basis of a total evidence analysis of molecular (mitochondrial and nuclear markers) and non-molecular (adult and larval morphological and behavioral characters) sampled from > 80% of the 75 currently recognized species. Our results support the monophyly of Leptodactylus sensu stricto, with Hydrolaetare placed as its sister group. The reciprocal monophyly of Hydrolaetare and Leptodactylus sensu stricto does not require that we consider Hydrolaetare as either a subgenus or synonym of Leptodactylus sensu lato. Troughs are one of the main components of villages in Turkey. They are constructed by converting springs or underground waters. Until now, there has been no extensive study investigating the composition and diversity of trough zooplankton species. In order to contribute knowledge on the zooplanktons in troughs, 142 troughs were randomly sampled from 17 districts in Ankara Province between 22 June and 3 July 2011. A total of 18 zooplanktons including 11 Copepoda and 7 Cladocera species were determined. In this research, 29 species of 11 amphibian and reptile families were detected in the endorheic basin of Akşehir and Eber. Of these species, 5 are anurans, 1 is a tortoise, 1 is a turtle, 9 are lizards, and 13 are snakes. In addition, the chorotype classification of the species recorded in the study area and their distributions depending on plants are also provided. Ecological characteristics of 32 nonmarine ostracod taxa collected from 89 aquatic habitats of Erzincan (Turkey) during the summer of 2006 were evaluated. All of the species are new reports for the area, while Cypria sywulae Meisch, 2000 is a new record for the Turkish ostracod fauna. The first 2 axes of canonical correspondence analysis explain 74.1% of the variance between 15 species and 5 environmental variables.
