The Employment Of A Conformal Polydopamine Thin Layer Reduces The Cytotoxicity Ofsilver Nanoparticles, Asli Yilmaz
The Employment Of A Conformal Polydopamine Thin Layer Reduces The Cytotoxicity Ofsilver Nanoparticles, Asli Yilmaz
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with their unique properties represent great promise in biological applications. However, the high toxicity of AgNPs still remains a major bottleneck and hinders their basic usage. In the present study, to improve the cytotoxicity of AgNPs, a thin layer of polydopamine (PDOP) was proposed as shell material. For this, the as-prepared citrate-stabilized AgNPs were dispersed in dopamine solution under alkaline conditions. The thickness of the PDOP layer could be manipulated simply by tuning the polymerization time. It was indicated that all NP systems (PDOP, AgNP, and AgNP@PDOP) were efficiently synthesized in the desired size and morphology. Cytotoxicity …

Turkish Journal of Zoology
The use of nanoparticles (NPs) has increased in recent years and consequently they are being released into the environment. The final destination of most NPs is the aquatic environment due to washing up by rain waters. Fish (n = 120) were exposed to different concentrations (0, 1, 5, and 25 mg/L) of aluminum-oxide (Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$), copper-oxide (CuO), and titanium-dioxide (TiO$_{2}$) NPs for 14 days and 14 days of depuration period (no NP in water). Following NP exposures, activities of Na,K-ATPase, Mg-ATPase, Ca-ATPase, and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the brain and muscle were measured. AChE activity in the brain and muscle decreased significantly …

Nonpharmacological Treatment Options For Alzheimer's Disease: From Animal Testing Toclinical Studies, Hasan Türkez, Mehmet Enes Arslan, Antonio Di Stefano, Ivana Cacciatore, Adi̇l Mardi̇noğlu
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Despite extensive pharmacological approaches, there is no curative therapy for Alzheimer?s disease (AD) or other types of dementias. While current pharmacological options alleviate some symptoms of AD, they can lead to various adverse effects. Hence, nonpharmacological treatment options for AD are often considered with the assumption that they are safe, effective, and economic in managing patients. Furthermore, studies on animal models have suggested that environmental exposures like diet, music, or rewardrelated actions can stimulate neuronal regeneration and differentiation without using any pharmacological factors. The aim of this review is to provide a summary of nonpharmacological treatment options for the management …

Mir-331 Negatively Regulates Thyroglobulin Secretion Via Erp29, Kyungmin Moon, Eun Ryeong Lee, Junghae Kim, Kisang Kwon, Oyu Kwon
Turkish Journal of Zoology
We investigated the effect of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) protein 29 (ERp29) on thyroglobulin (Tg) secretion and its negative regulation by microRNAs (miRNAs). ERp29 overexpression promoted Tg secretion from thyrocytes of PCCL3 cells via activation of ER stress sensors, including activation of transcription factor 6 fragmentation, XBP1 mRNA splicing by inositol-requiring enzyme 1, and phosphorylation of eukaryotic initiation factor 2 alpha as downstream actions of RNA-dependent protein kinase-like ER kinase. Thyroid hormone receptor beta is a target gene of mir-331, one of the most abundant miRNAs observed in ERp29-overexpressing cells. mir-331 negatively regulated Tg expression and secretion by ~70% compared with …

Turkish Journal of Zoology
Various studies have shown that the insulin-like peptides present in insects and investigation of their possible effects on insect physiology have significance for clarifying the evolutionary developmental period of insulin. The insect fat body is an organ analog to vertebrate adipose tissue and liver. In insects which do not have feeding activity during pupal and adult stages such as Bombyx mori, substances and energy required for continuation of life and development of tissues and organs are provided by the fat body via the autophagy process. In this study, we aimed to analyze the action of mammalian insulin in Bombyx pupae …

Quaking Aspen (Populus tremulodies) is considered priority habitat because it supports diverse understory flora and provides critical nesting and foraging habitat for wildlife. Aspen populations in western North America have declined due to fire suppression and browsing. Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge in eastern Washington addressed declining aspen with prescribed burns. However, aspen growth stimulated by burning was offset by browsing, especially by Elk (Cervus elaphus). Increasing elk numbers prompted initiation of a limited hunt to cull and disperse elk off refuge. To address the impact of these management strategies, we used remote video cameras to monitor …

In 2015, the mcr-1 gene was discovered in Escherichia coli in domestic swine in China that conferred resistance to colistin, an antibiotic of last resort used in treating multi-drug resistant bacterial infections in humans. Since then, mcr-1 was found in other human and animal populations, including wild gulls. Because gulls could disseminate the mcr-1 gene, we conducted an experiment to assess whether gulls are readily colonized with mcr-1 positive E. coli, their shedding patterns, transmission among conspecifics, and environmental deposition. Shedding of mcr-1 E. coli by small gull flocks followed a lognormal curve and gulls shed one strain >101 …

Double crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) and great egrets (Ardea alba) have an extensive history of human wildlife conflict with the aquaculture industry of western Mississippi, USA, due to
their depredation of cultured catfish (Ictalurus spp.). Although aquaculture is abundant, western Mississippi also contains naturally occurring water bodies that offer alternative forage opportunities to these species. How cormorants or egrets distribute themselves among these 2 foraging options is unknown, but it has been generally assumed each species uses aquaculture disproportionately more because of the high density of available prey. To test this assumption, we surveyed these …

Humans have captured, transported and intentionally released wild birds for centuries (Blackburn et al., 2009). Motivations for such purposeful introductions include food (West and Zhou, 2007), religion (Agoramoorthy and Hsu, 2007), sport (McDowall, 1994), biocontrol (Bennett and Hughes, 1959; Kurdila, 1995) and aesthetics (Ryan, 1906; Thomson, 1922). Many purposeful bird introductions were the work of acclimatization societies, particularly in North America, New Zealand and Australia. These societies were formed in the 19th century by European settlers to transport bird species from their homelands in efforts to establish them in the newly settled regions (Thomson, 1922; Dunlap, 1997). As a result …

Ticks On Lizards: Parasite-Host Interactions Of The Southern Alligator Lizard (Elgaria Multicarinata) In Washington State, Emma Houghton
Undergraduate Honors Theses
I investigated interactions between ectoparasites (ticks) and their host, the southern alligator lizard (Elgaria multicarinata). Alligator lizards are capable of complement-mediated killing of the Lyme disease spirochete carried by ticks and may potentially reduce Lyme disease prevalence by cleansing pathogenic organisms from ticks. Despite this, little is known about host-parasite dynamics in alligator lizards. My goals were to 1) assess patterns of tick presence (i.e. parasite load) on alligator lizards and 2) investigate potential negative effects of ticks on alligator lizards. I sampled lizards during the summer of 2019 near Catherine Creek, along the Columbia River Gorge in southern Washington. …
